Western Cape to build 72 new schools

2012-09-04 16:01

Johannesburg - A total of 72 schools, 26 new ones and 46 replacement schools, will be built in the Western Cape in the next three years, education MEC Donald Grant said on Tuesday.

"The department has finalised a three-year plan for infrastructure (2013/14-2015/16) that includes a shift in infrastructure spend in the direction of maintenance and the building of new schools," Grant said in a statement.

"The three largest allocations of this budget will be spent on new school buildings, replacement schools and on maintenance."

The province would also have five replacement school projects and 124 Grade R classrooms.

The plan would try to shift maintenance expenditure from its current 17% of the overall infrastructure budget to 40%, said Grant.

"The shift towards maintenance in this plan is not just about increasing the portion of the budget to maintenance. It is also about fundamentally changing the way maintenance is conceived and executed," he said.

There would be day-to-day maintenance by schools which would decrease the need for repairs because of neglect.

A total of 420 schools would be refurbished and have maintenance done over the three years. A further 45 schools would get life-cycle maintenance, said Grant.

In other news ANC wastes more money on street name changes

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 19:07

It does not even have to be the DA just a party with an average IQ above 5. It's seems the more uneducated you are the higher your place in the ANC. Youth league leader coming in second place with almost all subjects below 50 and the winner is Zuma with st3 or something. Atleast the DA get people who are intelligent enough.

      boltonbarry - 2012-09-04 20:03

The cANCer is jsut a big waste period

      tw2066 - 2012-09-04 22:40

well said brandon. I cannot - for the life of me - understand how the ANC justify this? OLD MAIN road is offensive they say? Zambezi drive changed - why? And while they re-name roads after common garden variety peasants, the poor starve, the kids stay stupid, and the country burns. MORE AMAZING - the voters remain true to their oppressors and vote ANC again??? Thick is as thick does......

      Havokreeka - 2012-09-04 22:45

Andile, the uneducated vote for the uneducated. It's sad but true. But I'm with you 100%. ANYONE besides the ANC is good enough, I'm pretty sure if we just left the country in anarchy it would do a better job.

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-05 20:28

@Havokreeka; Ja I think we should all just leave and let all the ignorant morons who keep voting ANC ("Because they fought for their freedom"(in a retard voice)) just destroy themselves. Bible says don't argue with a fool and that is exactly the problem here, you cannot reason with some with that mind set that they have. There is no logic upstairs its all just I WANT I WANT I IWANT!

  • jean.tredoux.5 - 2012-09-04 16:12

That's gonna leave a bitter taste for the anc and their minions... and that's a lot of schools, well done DA.

      stirrer.stirrer - 2012-09-04 16:39

They forgot to mention all of those 72 schools will actually have TEXTBOOKS!

      michael.vanrheenen.9 - 2012-09-04 17:22

Yeah DA!!! Keep trolling the ANC!!! I really wish the black majority of ANC voters' eyes will open up and realise that the DA is the way to go. They do not waste money on parties and jets while there are starving people out there. If Zille could be elected president you will see a DRASTIC change for the better... I just wish the ANC's voters will give DA a chance... Apartheid is GONE and has been for almost 20 years! It's NEVER coming back ANC voters... Did you hear me? NEVER!!! Why are you guys so ignorant of the potential of this country if it had great leaders? We all want the same thing... You are voting for the wrong party. If you don't want to vote for the DA, then just vote for another party except the ANC! They are stealing SA's reserves empty and the only ones benefiting are the ANC themselves!

      juan.prinsloo.750 - 2012-09-04 17:56

The time has come where there should be a serious public discussion amoungst Western Cape residents to protect the good governance, and priviledges that we have compared to the rest of SA. We should become an indepedent republic.

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 19:22

YES! We must make Cape Town a country of its own and let them have the rest of the country. What now you all surprised cause I,m black? I am the first one to evolve and be intelligent enough to see how stupid the ANC is haha no really it feels that way.

  • hetty.oliver - 2012-09-04 16:16

Instead of changing the road names, how about naming some of the schools after the struggle icons. Dullah Omar Primary or Secondary would mean more than having a road named after one.

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 17:09

How about making the western cape a country on its own. All the whites who hate the ANC for being useless can move there instead of all the way to Australia. I am just saying... could solve a lot of racist problems in SA.

      ally.oh.7 - 2012-09-04 17:55

Mmmm, perhaps that's better than naming a street after him. However, then the pupils will have to behave decently and be good citizens otherwise they will doubly besmirch the ANC stall-wort's (sic) name.

      russelllundie - 2012-11-12 19:34

Good idea, but that would mean that the ANC would then be in favour of education and nothing scares an ANC politician quite like an educated voter.

  • lydonmcg - 2012-09-04 16:18

I'm so interested to see what the ANC have to say about this one, after all their noise about school closures! Hahaha

  • fdalana - 2012-09-04 16:33

they must expect more 'international' students. our country still has to build the iconic Zumaville before we can get to 'less important things' such as that.

  • wmaries - 2012-09-04 16:49

PB- it is obvious that you not a capetonian... have you been to Valhalla Park, Elsies River, M/Plain, Atlantis... Have you heard of blikkiesdorp.. Do you no how many years those people is waiting for proper housing. Yet they living in that tins, come winter/summer.... Please tell where the 80% is going to that the DA spend, maybe in your pocket... but these people definately is not benefiting from it. You have no idea the suffering people is going through in cpt... just pray us coloureds never toi-toi for your sake... The DA, nor the ANC helps the people. in Cpt if you rich you rich... poor stay poor... My point is the DA rule the province, so they should be held accountable. Do you even no how many poor whites live in cpt.... You will be surprise what drugs and gangsterism can do...

      brandon.mercer3 - 2012-09-04 17:06

OK so how is that different to any other place in south africa? So the informal settlements in the rest of the provinces are running perfectly under ANC rule? I honestly dont get your point. If people take drugs or join gangs how is that the DAs fault?

      chris.groenewald.56 - 2012-09-04 17:11

wmaries, Have a look at the last part of the speech in link below. The problems like gangs, drugs, prostitution etc do exist and we as a community have to help fight it. In any sociaty you will find poor and rich and that is life. We will never get away from it. http://www.info.gov.za/speech/DynamicAction?pageid=461&sid=30297&tid=82043

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 17:25

The DA / ANC can do whatever they want, it's all a mindset to get rich. The reason the rich stay rich and the poor stay poor is ,because they think completely differently. If you take someone who started a his own company and put him on the street he will probably eventually make a success again. The point is stop sitting around on your ars blaming the government they aren't going to come hold your hand everyday and make sure you are spending correctly and investing properly. Parents need to raise their children in the right way also. It doesn't help they create a ton of jobs but no one wants to employ you ,because you are a low life criminal with an obvious attitude and are not willing to learn or show respect. Ja I have seen how the coloured youth are, they have this F u attitude.

      pwhanekom - 2012-09-04 17:50

\Those people is waiting\ for house is exactly the problem!! If they had a better education they would be employable and be able to BUY houses in stead of waiting for someone to give it to them! That does not imply that I don't feel sorry for them but new schools will at least ensure that there children will have better jobs and be able to care for themselves and their parents. That's how you eleviate poverty, not by handing out houses.

      juan.prinsloo.750 - 2012-09-04 18:12

Hmmm typical to blame government because you are too drunk or hooked on drugs to be interested or eligible to do any work. Your future is in your own hands, sober up, clean up and start from there.

      stanton.clarke - 2012-09-04 19:48

Guys, I know of people who sucessfully completed their matric certs and living in someone's back yard, unemployed. Yep, education is part of the solution, but young people need opportunities too. Drug abuse was always a problem in the Western Cape, its just that now you have matriculants who are dealers because of so few opportunities to advance themselves. Still, I must admit, the DA is doing well to address the needs of the ANC supporters who moved to the Western Cape for a better life. F$ck the ANC!

      pws69 - 2012-09-04 20:21

The DA have been waiting for more than three years for the NATIONAL (ANC) government to release land for RDP development. The DA are handcuffed badly by the ANC in carrying out their mandate, and STILL they manage to build 3 times more RDP houses in two years than the ANC built in five years. They need our support now more than ever if we are to finally topple the evil ANC.

  • wmaries - 2012-09-04 17:06

In places like levendar hill, elsies river, valhalla park, hanover park, atlantis and the list goes on and on, every child born is a gangster... school and starting at grassroots is not the key in the WC, social workers, and social programmes and employment is needed there... School with definately not curb gansterism, peoples mindset must be targeted. Capetonians is a whole different breed...

      brandon.mercer3 - 2012-09-04 17:13

How do you plan on employing people with no education? I dont know about u but that is the most illogical business plan. "Let's go hire the gangsters! They will be willing to work hard for there money!" please seriously wake up, its a nice thought but you could never put that into practice it will never work, people ecoming gangsters is their choice no one is forcing them

      redgy.elias - 2012-09-04 17:22

Wmaries,No child choose to be a gangster and no one is borne one either!Wonder why some people never see good news, like the building of new schools for educating our nation. Please people don't be so narrow minded, enbrace the new and try make a difference in the school in your community!Stop throughing stones, through love!

  • john.windvogel - 2012-09-04 17:07

Great stuff getting new schools and all. I just hope proper education systems and infrastructures will be ready and implemented by the time all these schools open. We cant have schools filled with students and no teachers because of low salaries and a syllabus that changes every year

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 17:31

Yes please just get another education system! Copy the Germans or something, theirs seems to be more effective. Learning about aids and apartheid is not going to help in the work place, it only causes racism.

  • neilpretorius83 - 2012-09-04 17:29

Good for the DA! How will the ANC, SASCO and their comrades respond to this? Blame the DA for not building 73?

  • tjantjes - 2012-09-04 18:19

And the 27 schools to be closed this year? Where are those kids supposed to go, while no other schools are available? The WCED close schools and then announces new schools to be built over 3 years? And where are these to be built, what is the plan with 27 school buildings that will now stand empty? Over the last few years 2000 schools have been closed nationally, so political parties are obviously scoring something out of these. \only a fool would close a school\.

      andile.vabasa - 2012-09-04 19:03

Hmmm valid point, either those schools are falling apart or they won't be closed just yet I guess.

      pws69 - 2012-09-04 20:23

They've already built 30 replacement schools. Please try to keep up.
