Cape Town - Cool, wet weather has hit large parts of the country - a sure sign that autumn has arrived.

Large parts of the Free State and Northern Cape experienced cool and wet conditions on Monday, reported Volksblad.

The cool weather in these provinces would continue until Thursday, a forecaster said.

In Victoria West in the Karoo, there was much joy after the town’s dam was full for the first time in 25 years.

More than 200mm of rain has fallen in the area since Friday, reported Die Burger.

At Arniston in the Western Cape, heavy rain over the weekend resulted in some homes and roads being flooded.

KKNK festival goers in Oudtshoorn had to bring along umbrellas and jerseys to cope with the miserable weather conditions.

Heavy rain was also experienced in parts of KwaZulu-Natal over the long weekend.

Scattered showers were predicted for Cape Town on Tuesday, with a maximum of 20°C.

Rain was also forecast for Johannesburg but temperatures would be considerably higher at 27°C.

The South African Weather Service issued a warning on Monday to motorists heading back from the Easter holidays to beware heavy rains and wet roads in the Northern, Eastern and Western Cape.
