Whale lands on boat, injures trio

Cape Town - Three men were injured when a whale breached off Port Elizabeth and landed on their inflatable boat, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said on Tuesday.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said Albertus Myburgh, 41, Wouter van Heerden, 25, and Rodney van der Mecht, 35, had been motoring close to Noordhoek on Monday evening.

They swam back to the boat after it capsized under the weight of the whale.

Lambinon said one of the men's cellphones was still working and they called the boat's owner for help.

"On arrival on-scene a search commenced for the boat in dark, moonless conditions, and using illuminating flares to aid in the search, the boat was found about one nautical mile off-shore with all three men clinging onto the hull," he said.

Myburgh had broken ribs and an injured arm and leg. He was taken to hospital in a serious, but stable condition.

Van Heerden's arm was injured and Van der Mecht sustained minor injuries.

Lambinon said the boat was towed to the Noordhoek ski-boat club. The centre console and pontoons were found to have been extensively damaged.

"The species of the whale is unknown to the three men, but they say it was large."

A pod of Humpback whales was recently seen in the area.

I am certainly no expert on the subject but Perlemoen springs to mind - again I'm not even sure if they inhabit these particular waters, just asking.......

My word some people have small minds!!! You can only make assumptions yes of what they might have or might not have been doing and hey Ed.Gutsche some comment that about "pity that they survived" who knows what families they have at home or children!! What if it was someone close to you like a friend or family member that might have encountered such an ordeal and they were injured or did not survive how pathetic you are so count your words and yes God works in mysterious ways so watch what you wish for!!!!

Settle down Samantha. What this report does not say is the guys had their fishing rods tied to the duck with heavy cable ties, were in wet suits and lost their diving equipment. There is no question - they are perlies.

  • samanthabadenhorst.vanheerden - 2012-11-07 09:30

Neither does the report mention diving equipment. Like I said assumptions can be made just because the report mentioned that they were wearing wetsuits. As quoted from a report "They all managed to swim to the the boat but were not able to reach the safety tube (a capsize kit containing emergency equipment) because of extensive damage to the center console where equipment is housed. 2 life-jackets and the capsized kit had been lost in the ordeal" but anycase thats not the point I am not here to argue, who cares what they were wearing etc they are human beings with families and children and they survived, it could have been worse it just angers me that you get such intellectual people in this country that say or think such terrible things.

They were diving for Perlemoen in the reserve off of Bushy park, once they have poached their fill they dropped the divers off behind the breakers at Sardinia bay, they swim ashore from there, and were then on their way across the bay to Swartkops to deliver their haul and at speed across the bay hit the whale and capsised the boat, I live here on the coast, the driver is known as Boempie Van der Mescht, there you go Samantha, the real story
