Johannesburg - A man has been arrested after his wife was killed with a homemade gun in Springs on the East Rand, Gauteng police said on Monday.

The shooting took place on Sunday when the couple was packing furniture, about to move out from the room they were renting in Geduld, Captain Johannes Ramphora said.

"The husband said the bullet came out of a gun that fell on the floor from underneath the mattress."

The gun was fabricated from legal firearm material, elastic bands, and an iron nail.

The 33-year-old man alerted police who called paramedics. His wife had been shot in the neck and died shortly after their arrival.

The man would appear in the Springs Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

This is a two-fold tragedy... and a bitter irony! That the wife was killed by a zip-gun crafted for their own protection in the face of criminal assaults is ironic, and tragic. That honest citizens have to resort to this for protection is the real tragedy here. The Firearms Control Act is driving desperate citizens to these half-baked measures to protect themselves. Shame on the ANC and the bootlicking SAPS for preventing citizens from accessing decent, safe means of self-defence!
