Johannesburg - The Chair of Wits University Council Dr Randall Carolissen is urgently flying from Durban to meet with student leaders as the third day of protests at the institution intensifies.

Wits University spokesperson Shirona Patel, said Vice Chancellor Adam Habib requested that Carolissen cut his trip short.

Carolissen was part of a Wits delegation attending the National Higher Education Transformation Summit in Durban.

"Habib and Carolissen together with the Wits University Exco Council are scheduled to meet with student leaders and the Student Representative Council this Friday night at 19:00. Carolissen was meant to address the summit but he is forced to cut his trip short," said Patel.

The student leaders comprise of the ANC Youth League, the Wits University EFF student council, the All Residence Council and the Outsource Workers.

The protests were sparked by the university's proposed 10.5% fee increase next year.

Patel said Habib who was meant to address the students earlier this morning was lambasted instead.

"Habib is still on the ground with the thousands of students surrounding him. The students say he doesn't have any power and they are demanding to speak to Carolissen," she said.
