Johannesburg - A Wits University student has been arrested for the alleged rape of a fellow student, Johannesburg police said on Thursday.

"Johannesburg Central Police arrested a 30-year-old male for rape at Wits University, Braamfontein, on 24 September at 10:00," said police spokesperson Xoli Mbele.

"It is alleged that a suspect raped a 22-year-old female at Phumlani Garden Newtown on 21 September at 02:00."

The victim allegedly woke up in the male student's bed and saw condoms on the floor after they had been for drinks at Gandhi Square, he said.

"[The] male slept with her without her consent and she opened a case of rape."

The suspect would appear at the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
