Woman, 91, raped by intruder

2012-10-06 09:12

Pietermaritzburg - Police have increased patrols in the Hayfields area of Pietermaritzburg after a 91-year-old woman was raped in her home on Friday.

The woman was alone at home when she was attacked.

The woman’s family and neighbours were shocked by the attack, and puzzled by how the man entered the house.

“This is a well-fenced home with a security system. How did this man enter the yard?” a neighbour at the scene asked.

As the Weekend Witness got to the scene, the woman walked out of her house with a walking stick in her right hand and the other arm held tightly by her daughter.

She appeared to be in shock as she was put in a car and taken to hospital.

A security guard cycling along the N3 near the home was asked by the police if he saw a person walking along the freeway carrying a bag. A reply in the affirmative caused the officers to rush to the N3, calling for a dog unit as they did so, but the man spotted by the guard appeared not to be the woman’s attacker and was set free.

He did not match the description of the attacker given to the police and was not in possession of any of the items stolen in the incident.

Police spokesperson Captain Thulani Zwane said these include a watch and computer monitor.

He advised residents to be vigilant and to contact the police if they encountered suspicious-looking strangers in the area.

“They must ensure that their doors and security gates are locked at all times, especially at night and when vulnerable women and children are alone at home.

“Police have increased their patrols and detectives have activated their intelligence network to identify, locate and arrest the alleged rapist as a matter of urgency,” said Zwane.

Please catch this thug and give him to the family to deal with. This is just sick, people like this need to suffer at the hands of the victim and their families not our useless justice system because 10to 1 he will get bail and will be to hard to find or will cross the border never to be seen again.

The ANC want Natal and the western cape ungovenable. get it in your heads. projected tourism figures ( fedhasa) are dropping by 18% this year due to direct flights being lost. the running riot in the streets , murdering people at will , and all everyone does is go about day to day. madam Zille a referendum please . republic of western cape can be very successful and so can a independent Natal , maybe before the official figure ( no believed) 55 deaths a day become 155 a day.

Are we going to blame apartheid and poverty for this aswell?? This is the action of a complete savage.

      Desilusionada - 2012-10-06 11:54

'Violent attacks 'not unique to farmers' Quite right. I now agree with the Headline of the other article. It is not unique, because the elderly are now being targeted, together with the young. As long as genetically deficient specimen of Homo Sapiens are allowed to do as currently happening, this country WILL become a 2nd Rwanda. The moral code by which these examples of deviant evolution of the gene pool live by, has nothing to do with poverty, oppression or any of the glib reasons sprouted by our dysfunctional government. It has all to do with an expression of power. And the tragedy is that the majority were not even part of the "struggle" .........

Savages that rape their elderly. You never hear of whites doing this. We would kill the men who do this to our women.

Philas, blacks make up roughly 80% of the SA population. They commit probably 95%+ of all crimes. So the perpetrator was probably black.

And now JZ ?? Giving parcels to the aged to try and secure your "space" in December ?? What savage and cowardly species. Takes four of them to rob and kill an innocent woman and attacking and raping a frail and eldery citizen that no doubt helped build this country. And the "Blade" wants us to give them jobs and train them. FFS !!!

  • julie.braun.1238 - 2012-10-06 09:50

This just proves that they are just savages, with absolutely no morals, respect non existent, and yes, apartheid cannot be used as justification for such an act. Defenceless, young, old, age means nothing, its sick... if the victim is breathing, rape her, thats what these pigs do.. I hope, when they catch this bastard, he gets exactly what he deserves, if not, hang the bastard.

      kobus.hattingh.5 - 2012-10-06 10:05

Read the article again Philas. Its a guarentee. Just as was all the other incidents where elderly gets raped.

  • Andre - 2012-10-06 09:57

How sick can you be to rape a 93 old woman!

      sharon.erwin.96 - 2012-10-06 10:13

@ Philas - is that really relevant? Fact is that this is an elderly lady, probably a great-grandmother who was violated in the worst possible way. I doesn't matter if she was 6 months old, or a todler, or a teen, she was brutally raped! Get your priorities straight.

      goldwright - 2012-10-06 10:52

@khethu, Hate is no excuse for doing unimaginable things. Is that why this country has such a high crime rate? Because people are using hate as the excuse for such vile acts as the rape of a woman in her 90's? We all make choices in life, and we CHOOSE to hate or not to hate regardless of our backgrounds in life. I don't buy that ONE bit. It is one thing to steal to feed your family because you are truly hungry and honestly can't find a job, - but to steal and in the process rape someone while you are stealing? That person makes that choice to rape, and if they are not able to rise themselves above that hate, and do something so despicable, then they HAVE to be held accountable and punished for such a deed. Instead of using the excuse of hate for doing such unimaginable things, people should be taught to make the RIGHT choices and do good things, instead of taking the cowardly route and using the excuse of hate. There is NO excuse for such behaviour.

      Johann Enslin - 2012-10-06 11:24

Hate belongs to the one who hates

  • goldwright - 2012-10-06 10:01

    @philas, lets take a BET?

      andrez.kolesky - 2012-10-06 10:40

@sarecen. don't even argue with someone that spent 3 years at jhb university and is now a taxi driver. Makes one think doesn't it ?? As per your suggestion above, a better idea is to place his "tools" in a vise, remove the handle, leave a blunt knife close by and set the room alight. This way he can do it himself.

  • FinalJustice - 2012-10-06 10:08

No man can rape a 91 year-old woman. It can't even be an animal, not even apes will do such a thing. It has to be something like a pest, or a virus that spreads disease, and needs to be eradicated. We can't have a 'thing' like this live and move among us in society.

      lionel.defrontignac - 2012-10-07 02:17

FYI chimps kill and eat their own. Chimps are our closest relative and extremely violent - seems we have the same gene. Humans as a species of ape are very sick - we commit genocide, destroy the environment, etc etc.

  • sarecen.smith - 2012-10-06 10:08

How do you recover from this at age 91? Always the old or innocent children. People are going to take the law into their own hands more and more.

  • rene.smit2 - 2012-10-06 10:57

she was taken to hospital when the report was taken. have doctors confirmed that she was raped ?????

      marlene.hitchcock.9 - 2012-10-06 11:05

      Do you think she lied??

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-10-06 11:08

surely she would have known if she was raped. Why on earth would a Dr have to confirm it!?

      nettie.potgieter.5 - 2012-10-06 11:11

Don't understand why you ask this stupid qestion

      goldwright - 2012-10-06 11:25

Stupid comment from rene, but Dawn, a Dr is needed to confirm it, so there will be medical and legal proof, to catch this bastard, and put him behind bars, hopefully for a very long time, so maybe he will get raped in jail and die of hiv/aids (don't give him treatment)..... oh yes, put him behind bars, seeing we are such the civilised country that we are, that we do not have the death sentence, but we hear of the frequent rapes of the elderly and young and yet we still want to call this country "civilised"........

      cya.khubone - 2012-10-06 11:34

You wouldn't ask this question if she was your grandmother.

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-10-06 12:30

SO many question marks, rene.smit2???? Why on earth would an elderly lady lie about something like this? Hope this never happens to your granny. You'd be the first one asking why it happened, never mind IF it happened.

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-10-06 12:58

very true, a Dr report is needed for the charges to be made, but, what Rene was saying was, how can they make a report on the issue without confirmation.

      lolylinamanyagwe - 2012-10-06 17:39

Now I really wish it was you who got raped rene..I guess u wouldn't even notice that u got raped...Why on earth would she lie?????

  • sello.r.molefe - 2012-10-06 11:25

Ag sis man i can't even read this story we r a sick nation.. We need prayers, cleansing or som vudu healing...

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-10-06 12:27

@ Sello... prayers haven't helped thus far, have they? Read this recently: Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent. Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent. Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God? Pretty sure neither cleansing or voodoo would help either. My opinion is (watch the thumbs down on this one) that the cancer that was Apartheid has a lot to do with the sickness we are seeing. It will take many more generations before real healing in our beautiful country starts to show.

      goldwright - 2012-10-06 13:03

I think you are right and you are wrong Brian - it's a touchy subject this subject of how much blame apartheid should take in the "sickness" we are seeing in this country. Yes, of course apartheid led to many injustices, and destroyed the confidence/pysche of many of the black people in this country. Apartheid however, did not have anything to do DIRECTLY with this. A man made the decision to rape a 91 year woman, regardless of apartheid. He made that choice, and he has to own it now, (and pay for it) blaming apartheid directly or indirectly, holds no water here. Like I said in one of my other comment, it's one thing to steal if you are truly hungry and can't find a job, but the need to rape a defenceless old woman? There is NO excuse for that, and even though some may feel it's easier said than done, it HAS to be done - the sooner this country moves on from blaming history (apartheid) however directly or indirectly they feel it to be for the causes of the ills of this country, the better off this country will be.

  • Nhlanhla Zondi - 2012-10-06 11:36

People pls dont drag race into this, a poor woman was rape and that should be condemned and we need to stand together to fight crime but we wont if we keep pointing fingers at each other

      jacqy.marx - 2012-10-06 11:58

I agree 100% with you!! I'm so sick and tired of people using the race card when something bad has happened! This is a terrible thing that has happened!

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-10-06 12:28

      Well said, Nhlanhla.

      Dawn Campbell Gibson - 2012-10-06 13:00

The race card is bad, but even worse this dragging god into everything. If he was so great, there would not be any discussions over things like this anyway.

  • mzuvukile.maswana - 2012-10-06 11:59

Again! No this country really needs a serious introspection of itself. Hardly a year on the first incident then this worse during the month of the senior citizens. Government and civil society really need to work together in order to avoid these attrocities. No blame game, just working together.

      lionel.defrontignac - 2012-10-07 02:20

  • riona.rajkumar - 2012-10-06 12:07

Please do not bring race and religion into this matter. I am horrified that this woman was raped and it is a crime were the person who committed this act needs to be delt with. The problem is that we all lose sight of what the real problem is. We go on talking about religion and race and the real problem is not dealt with. I agree the person who raped the elderly woman needs to suffer for the crime committed.

This is a very sad, disturbing story. My heart goes out to the victim. Everyone should have a look at the Victim Support Network on Facebook at - it shares current events related to crime, and offers advice and couselling to victims of ANY crime related incidents in South Africa. Even non-victims can utilise this page or join their Group to seek advice of what to do in situations like these. Even more, an incident like this could have been avoided completely if you simply protect yourself and property with a security solution that warns you BEFORE intruders are inside. This article says the woman had a security system but undoubtedly it only alarmed when it was too late. Have a look at WirelessAlert (, its a fantastic product I invested in some years ago after I experienced a nasty break-in. I honestly believe in this product because it warns me before intruders even make it onto my property!
