Johannesburg - A woman and her pet were rescued from a burning apartment building in Killarney, Johannesburg, on Wednesday night, paramedics said.

"Paramedics, other services and members from the Rosebank Fire Department arrived at the scene and found that a part of a building had caught alight," Netcare 911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann said.

"Members from the fire department entered the building and rescued a woman and her pet cat from the building."

According to Steinmann, the woman said she noticed smoke and went to look for her cat before trying to exit the building.

"Upon assessment of the woman, paramedics found that she was in a serious condition and was transported to hospital for further medical care.

"The feline was transported to a medical facility for further care and smoke inhalation treatment as well."

Shortly after the rescue, the fire was put out.

No one else was injured in the blaze.

Steinmann said the cause of the fire was being investigated.
