Johannesburg - A woman was arrested on Wednesday after she knocked down a pedestrian on a pavement, said Johannesburg metro police.

Police spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said she was driving on the pavement when she hit the elderly man.

"The man was admitted to Sunninghill Hospital with serious head injuries," said Minnaar.

The woman would appear in the Randburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday on charges of reckless or negligent driving.

  • peter.ndamase - 2013-01-23 15:14

The woman blah blah blah... pavement blah blah blah....head injuries blah blah blah... Please news24 make the story juicy, is it a politician?

  • peejay.maclane - 2013-01-23 15:15

She might have been applying make-up, talking on the cellphone, smoking and drinking coffee at the sametime while driving LOL

Some of the terrible things I see on the roads are woman speeding and flipping the finger, most of them are in smart cars that they can not even park without causing a stand-still, drunk men racing on the highway... They all drive as if they own the roads! It's enough to make me sick!

      carol.harvey.9406 - 2013-01-23 15:32

Yes, I agree, not to mention the women and men in huge 4x4's which they can't handle

      toni.k.mcquillen - 2013-01-23 15:48

I do agree that there are poor drivers on the road, but not just woman although I have seen my share that are not observant when driving, but some men are just as bad, SA has poor drivers in general, and some think they own the road! Very frustraing a topic we face each day in traffic!

Confiscate her car, and take away her liscence. People like her shouldn't be behind a wheelbarrow let alone be driving a car

      jackie.m.dickson - 2013-01-23 15:53

I would love to know if she has a licence! She must have bought it? It may be valid but that doesnt mean she got it legally. Seriously? Hitting a pedestrian on a pavement?? Could only happen under extreme circumstances. So either News24 failed to report correctly which is normal or this woman needs to loose her licence.

@News24 my neighbor's dog died yesterday...If you can do it so can I.

      jack.trend.3 - 2013-01-23 19:16

Give them your contact details so that they can run their stories past you first. Heaven forbid Yandisa and Mickey don't approve.

Reminds of a bumper sticker from years gone by: "If you don't like my driving, then please stay off the pavement!"

JMPD should spend 2 hours, between 6.30am and 8.30am on the corner of Douglas and Leslie rods in Douglasdale. Taxi and cars ramp up the pavement to avoid the queue....pedestrians have to move away off the foot path to let them through. I have reported to my local councillor, who asked me to tell Metro.....please! vote from me ever again in the municipal elections. Lazy sods. Until someone is dragged under a taxi....nothing will be done.

How do some people get licenses! My word she deserved to be locked up

  • leon.lambourn - 2013-01-23 15:42

Indeed, not enough info. Was she cruising along on the pavement for a while or what? Like bypassing traffic by using the emergency lane on the highway, but in town using the pavement for that purpose.

  • Eterni80 - 2013-01-23 15:53

now go lock up all the taxi drivers

  • gary.desousa.5 - 2013-01-23 16:19

  • richard.baerveldt - 2013-01-23 16:31

If she was on the pavement you can only guess where she learnt that trick from. Can't say I'm surprised. Peoples Driving in JHB has become an epademic. Across all races and genders

  • marthin.dejongh1 - 2013-01-23 22:29

What if something happened to her child and she was trying to get to her child and the traffic was harshly blocked up......???? Like that woman who tried to reach her father that was dying in hospital and the cop arrested her at the hospital entrance for going over the speed limit and then her father passed away while the cop was arresting her. you are thinking!!!

  • PatrickV.MP - 2013-01-26 20:30

Any person involved in a serious or fatal accident should be forced to retake their drivers license with a senior examiner before that are allowed back on the roads. The results of the test should then go back to the court where they will then determine if that person is fit to ever drive again! That should help get rid of some of the 'lucky dip' licences that are still out there on the road.
