Woman assaulted during Cosatu strike

2012-03-08 11:21

Johannesburg - A woman was allegedly assaulted during the Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) strike on Wednesday in Rustenburg, North West police said on Thursday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said a 25-year-old woman was allegedly assaulted around noon after she allegedly knocked down a 43-year-old male pedestrian.

"The woman was driving towards her office where the streets had been blockaded and she was re-routed."

A group of protesters allegedly followed the woman's vehicle after the pedestrian was knocked over.

"They smashed the windows of her vehicle before removing her and allegedly assaulting her."

Two police officers who were monitoring the protest intervened and took the woman to the local police station.

"Her vehicle was overturned by protesters."

Ngubane said a case of malicious damage was registered regarding the damages to the woman’s vehicle, and a case of reckless and negligent driving was registered in connection with the accident in which the male pedestrian was injured.

      Clive - 2012-03-08 11:33

they are animals and stuff like this happens at every protest. wish the police will put these animals in cages where they belong

      Pythagoras - 2012-03-08 11:38

I think we should be recording things like these more and more and post them on YouTube so that the world can see what animals we have living in SA. We should actually created a website with a forum as well...

@Jowza seriously? They assaulted a young woman and overturned her car. Was the pedestrian even injured? Was the woman aware that she "hit" the pedestrian? Your hatred of whites is seriously clouding your judgment. Its not our fault that you feel inferior to us, go and see a shrink about your inferiority complex.

      Heibrin - 2012-03-08 13:11

@Steen & jowza1: Please, pretty please, with sugar on top, show me where she almost killed someone?? And btw, common sense tells me that if a 1000+ kg car is driving along the road I get my 80kg @ss out of the way.

Dirty filthy scumbag thugs, COSATU's rent-a-mob. Lowlife oxygen thieves.

  • Andre - 2012-03-08 11:37

So much for the police protecting citizens. They left her to be beaten up first and then intervened. Useless bunch!

      Marion - 2012-03-08 12:21

The only thing anyone is sure of here Clive is that she was a woman.

      Bokfan - 2012-03-08 13:10

The poor woman was probably terrified of the mob. Remember many of them would have a hatred of liberated women and regard rape as a male right.

      Clive - 2012-03-08 14:05

@Marion there are photos out already its a white girl and it happend 500m from where i work

      Naledi Mabindla - 2012-03-09 07:07

One would feel sorry for this woman however with comments by the likes of bokfan they mess up the whole story!most of them hated liberated women and are rapists\\what utter rubbish painting a whole group of non white men with the same brush!

  • Freddie - 2012-03-08 11:40

Sue Cosatu for damage to property and assault. The constitutional court ruling on union liability of strikers actions is due soon, all unions must pay up for their irresponsible actions.

  • Christopher - 2012-03-08 11:46

And yet nothing happened to the taxi driver in Bloem? And that was caught on cctv! Total disgrace.

      bluzulu - 2012-03-08 20:00

Did you see the cheeky turd saunter across the road.

  • Jeffrey - 2012-03-08 11:56

They smashed the windows of her car and removed her then overturned the car, but the assault is only "alleged"?

      bluzulu - 2012-03-08 19:58

They were trying to save her......

How can it be reckless and negligent driving when the street was filled with people and there are few options NOT to avoid people? Not everyone knows which roads are diverted and where, and sometimes you only find out when you are IN that road. Why didn’t they have some sort of blockage up in the diverted roads so people CAN’T drive there like they do with other events? How badly could the person have been injured if the street was filled with people and she couldn’t have been driving very fast? Me thinks someone is over exaggerating and the mob crowd hopped on the opportunity. Beating up a woman? How cowardly.

  • Adri - 2012-03-08 12:05

You know, in some countries, you are sentenced to death for striking. The "pedestrian" got off good. She should have backed up and drove over him AGAIN!

      lindz.kok - 2012-03-08 12:46

it is safe to asume as in china you get the death sentance for drugamugeling as we all well know.

      Malcolm - 2012-03-08 13:24

@Xolani - While I don't agree with the original posters sentiments about wanting to kill people, nowhere did they mention race at all. The commented was directed at strikers in general who could be absolutely any colour... So please explain then why is it that you are so race obsessed? Is it because you in fact are the one who is a racist?

  • kswanepoel - 2012-03-08 12:06

COSATU should consider not just only training their Shopstewards, but also training their members and enforcing rules & regulations relating to marches!

      Sharon - 2012-03-08 12:38

mzwandile, you obviously were not near thokoza yesterday, quiet a few people were beaten up mearly because they were not marching with the evolutionary challenged strikers,so please take your isolated incident comment and put it where the sun dont shine

  • Stephen - 2012-03-08 12:06

Let us review the situation, a crowd, woman accidentally knocks over a man after being rerouted, shall she stay and risk her life, or go, my wife, “Honey ride like hell" ... so I side with the woman.

  • surita.coetzer - 2012-03-08 12:06

Bastards hope she sue Cosatu for millions!!!!!!!!!

  • Pit - 2012-03-08 12:15

Barbarians. I doubt that she ran over a pedestrian. News 24 forgot to mention that the woman assaulted was white. If it were the other way around I am sure all colors involved would have been mentioned.

  • Karri - 2012-03-08 12:21

Go and have a read over here - better reporting...

  • drishworth - 2012-03-08 12:27

@Steen, you have chosen to believe that the driver left the scene of the accident because it was reported that "A group of protesters allegedly followed the woman's vehicle after the pedestrian was knocked over". That doesn't mean it was hit and run - perhaps she was driving to a safe place to pull over or to the police station. Who knows. Or maybe she did just wanted to get the hell out of there - understandably she may have benn afarid and rightly so when you read what thesae 'people' did. Read Karri's comment below posted just after yours.

  • Boyd - 2012-03-08 12:29

I love how everybody hs something to say but nobody really knows what went down. Your'e all idiots. As for the continuous efforts to bring race into each and every article's commentary, it's simply disheartening and frankly, frightening. Most of you behave like 14 year old entrenched racists. FFS!!! GET OVER IT NOW!!!

  • malcolm.dale - 2012-03-08 12:45

First off those of you who keep calling people like this animals please cease doing so. Animals are far better behaved. Secondly those of you who are so knowledgable on what took place at the scene please get to the relevant police station to give your evidence, and then make your comments on this forum. The woman is innocent until proven guilty. Lastly what the hell has race got to do with this? A "person" was knocked down by "another person" and a large group of "people" - race unproven but assumed- set upon the driver of the vehicle and beat her up. The police must do their job and prosecute whomsoever deserves prosecution.

  • roberta.keeling - 2012-03-08 13:15

The pedestrian should not have been in the road! The action by the strikers was predictable - that's the S.A. way of settling things!

  • marina.lavini - 2012-03-08 14:09

@ All - and they call this living together in peace?????

  • bluzulu - 2012-03-08 19:35

Just another Stupid driver. Probably no obviously ignorant to the rest of the world. Just another selfish fool, more interested in getting a free coffee at the office than the issue at hand.
