2013-01-12 16:19

Johannesburg - A woman is in a serious condition after being attacked by a rhino at a game park in Roodepoort on Saturday, Gauteng paramedics said.

The rhino struck the 24-year-old in the chest with its horn, said Netcare 911 spokesperson Chris Botha said

"Paramedics arrived at the scene and found her to be in a serious condition and in severe pain," said Botha.

"She was stabilised on scene and transported her to the Netcare Krugersdorp hospital for the care that she required."

It was unclear what triggered the attack.

Rhino, why u no attack pouchers?

  • rene.beeton - 2013-01-12 17:02

Could the young woman have been on a guided bush trail walk when the incident occurred? She probably did exactly what she was told and that was to stand still and not run. Perhaps the reason for the injury to her chest. I hope she survives her injuries and my wishes to her for a speedy recovery.

Issue a warrant of arrest for the rhino while you still probing the cause.........

  • danscholtz123 - 2013-01-12 17:04

Well is it not about time the Rhinos get a bit pissed off at us humans killing them off. But seriously now ---- we do not know the circumstances but how the hell did this woman get so close to a wild animal???

      squeegee.pilot - 2013-01-12 17:32

      In a car...

  • Michael Hawthorne - 2013-01-12 17:10

Rhinos are known to attack anything it deems threatening... People should be much more careful when around them even ones in captive.

  • kathy.bergh.56 - 2013-01-12 17:18

PLEASE don't kill the Rhino. She was obviously NOT in a car or behind an enclosure. The Rhino would just be trying to protect itself. Blessings and prayer for her health

      Kathy, says who?

      Moagi Mohohlo - 2013-01-12 17:51

      She was perhaps playing?

  • Bongeka - 2013-01-12 17:20

Nationality please. Maybe, then we can make out if she is an owner's daughter, wife, game farm servant or a tourist that's up to no good. Nationality can give us the idea.

      retha.vosloo.5 - 2013-01-12 18:40

Why? A woman was attacked. Does not matter what's the colour.

      Bongeka - 2013-01-12 19:06

Yes, in a way. Don't you know how racially devided South Africans are? If news says a bank has been robbed, car jacking, man bitten by a shark while surfing. People of this country just make out by simple knowing what happened the race of the culprit. Please don't deny that because its the truth.

  • andrew.crawford.50 - 2013-01-12 17:37

Was it a white or black rhino? N0, seriously, hope the woman is okay!

  • ibogainesa - 2013-01-12 17:39

The next stupid thing to happen is ......some clown will say the Rhino needs to be put down.

  • nelia.liebenberg.1 - 2013-01-12 17:45

What on earth was she doing - surely there were warnings about wild animals and even if there were not, you do not take on a rhino.

  • jane.dawson.165 - 2013-01-12 17:50

What was she doing out of the vehicle?

  • Connie Calitz - 2013-01-12 18:49

There is a possibility that the rhino saw what is gooing on in SA and decided that the best form of defence is attack. Hope the woman is ok though

I guess they don't trust humans. It was just trying to protect its horn.
