Woman denies recruiting drug mule

Grahamstown - An Eastern Cape woman has denied helping to recruit and train her friend Nolubabalo Nobanda to smuggle cocaine into Thailand.

"I never asked that she be involved. I never recruited her," Sulezi Rwanqa said in a telephonic interview from her Port Elizabeth home.

Rwanqa was travelling with Nobanda at the time of her arrest at Bangkok's Suvarnabhumi Airport on December 12, 2011.

In a letter to her parents, Nobanda says she was going to Brazil to work in a shoe shop. Rwanqa had told her to fly from South Africa to Brazil two days after Rwanqa left.

Not to blame

According to Nobanda's letter, on her arrival in South America she was met by a Brazilian man who asked her name and told her Rwanqa was waiting in a nearby hotel. At the hotel, she says, a number of women were being trained to smuggle drugs.

Nobanda travelled with Rwanqa from Brazil to Thailand and at the time of her arrest, she had Rwanqa's phone, but Rwanqa was nowhere to be found.

Rwanqa returned to South Africa later in December. Rwanqa said she had been travelling with Nobanda at the time of her arrest but disputed being a drug mule recruiter. She said she could not be blamed for Nobanda's arrest.

"What I know is that Babsie [Nobanda] was not feeling good, and in fact became sick in Brazil, and I was by her side. I cannot say much."

Nobanda was expected to appear in a Bangkok court on March 19.

In her letter, Nobanda said the weight of the cocaine she was charged with carrying had been reduced from over 1kg to around 600g because it had been mixed with baking powder. She hoped this would make the charges against her less severe.

just checked her profile on facebook (Sulezi Rwanqa), the last post on her wall (posted: october 10 2011) gives a slight clue on what she was about to do... guyz tell me if i'm overreacting

      Frank - 2012-02-10 12:49

You may be spot on Sizah. If she is guilty it is sad that this is the way she chose to change her life. It certainly isn't going to uplift society.

      Leann - 2012-02-10 13:26

What was the post? Cant find her on FB...

      Marion - 2012-02-10 13:30

@Sizah... You could well be right... She actually has two profiles. On the one, with a generic avatar, she has two friends. One is Nobanda. On the other profile she seems to be recruiting friends like there is no tomorrow by looks of things.

      Sizah - 2012-02-10 13:43

@Marion... she was definately recruiting friends by the sound of it... spot on my friend

      Moratwa - 2012-02-10 14:40

Hi Sizah, you got it all right according to her last status posted on the 10th October she in not saying it directly, but reading between the lines she is saying Nolubabalo will gets whats getting her way as she choose that way and must live with the quensequese

  • Mlungisi - 2012-02-10 12:34

So remind us; what were you doing in BK Sulezi?

  • wnkambule - 2012-02-10 12:37

"600g" Even a gram still counts as illegal!

  • Bongani - 2012-02-10 12:44

Recruited or not recruited. The lady is just desperate to get out of jail. This Rwanqa lady is a master, but Nobanda volunteered to carry drugs to Thailand instead of bringing them to me.

      Linda - 2012-02-10 13:02

Are you totally insane or just taking the p***?

  • Shirley - 2012-02-10 12:55

Botom line is she did the crime-so do the TIME!!! No sympathy for them, they knew what they were doing and had no consideration for the families left behind.

  • Mashudu - 2012-02-10 13:10

NO smoke without FIRE! Rwanqa knows something, it's just she can't admit bcoz she will be arrested.

      Philisiwe Msomi - 2012-02-10 13:16

      who can admitt???

      Gail - 2012-02-10 15:52

Just from what I have read on here Rwanqa should be under surveillance 24/7 until she steps out of line again because she sold people who trusted her down the river. The shoe job was just a cover story she gave them . After all she is home and richer for the moment and got away with it. When the money runs out she will do it again and next time she might be sold down the river because she has talked.

That's what you do when OGA becomes your paper husband!

      chantelle.ntuli - 2012-06-17 18:07

Bloody foolish SA sisters how can someone from west Africa come convince me to go out of my country when he or she remains behind. If its easy as they always claim why don they go do their dirty work themselves. Till we all lean crime doesn't pay one way or the other if you do something wrong you are bound to be caught and you are fully responsible or your actions period.

  • Lerato - 2012-02-10 13:18

Betrayed by a friend Mxxm jy is maal, You knew very well what you were doing

  • Kekeletso Nakeli - 2012-02-10 13:32

Everybody stop the lorry, where was this "good" friend Sulezi when Babsie had all this coke put into her hair?

      Mcebo - 2012-02-10 17:03

Am thinking she knew she was gonna be caught...I mean when travel we wait n look for each other jst after landing...she ran away cosnshe knew it was Babsie day to be arrested...

      nthabiseng.priklopil - 2012-02-11 12:03

Kekeletso. I hate drugs. They have changed the face of our communities. Besides the Sulezi and the mule, no sympathy. Look at the bigger picture. Drugs play a huge role in all the unfortunate incidents in our country. Rape, murder, crime and the list is ongoing. The most sad thing is that kids and youth are the target market. I grew up poor, and never believed for once, that killing other human for the sake of a quick rand will be an option. Her parents did their best to sent her to a good school but she chose to be a 'straat maid'. With her arrest, less distribution of "nyaope" and the rest. Maybe Sulezi will follow soon by taking an overdose. DRUGS DESTROY MANKIND!

Kekeletso Nakeli - 2012-02-18 18:24 what are you on about?

  • Marion - 2012-02-10 13:32

Didn't Sheryl Cwele also deny her links with Tessa Beetge (I think that's her name)? Look where she is now.

      Gail - 2012-02-10 16:00

Actually where is she come to that? What happened after she was convicted - did she go to jail?

      Marion - 2012-02-10 16:16

I think she's still out pending her appeal... Isn't that what always happens? Sucks.

  • Selebaleng - 2012-02-10 13:39

Babsy, its good that you have accepted the consequences that are about to happen to you and wena Sulezi, I smell a rat and rat is you.

      Lingululwani Mashila - 2013-03-15 16:47

Very true, Sulezi won't have peace for as long as she lives, God will punish the hell out of her

  • Sizah - 2012-02-10 13:41

(LAST POST ON HER FB WALL)Sulezi Rwanqa: If u alwz do what u've alwz done,u'll get what u've alwz had.Too many of us never think about what we want out of lyf, never mind what we need to do to get there. The most important thing is that it's up to u to make ur lyf the life u want to live,by luving urself do it now...!

      Gail - 2012-02-10 16:04

Old old saying from multi level marketing! Sadly believe it or not for an innocent small town girl who HASn"t heard it before it can be very persuasive. Once you are hooked it is v. difficult to get out of it because you now know too much.

  • Roy - 2012-02-10 14:14

Besides her family who does she expect to believe her? Hope next she tries it again she will be the one who is caught and given a lethal injection. These people are the scum of the earth and should be shown no mercy when caught.

      Gail - 2012-02-10 16:06

Harsh Roy, when one considers that the liberators are living it up the way they are instead of fulfilling their promises. This age group believe that everything is their right and should be quicky and easy - no work required.

  • baxitoo - 2012-02-10 14:28

    Nobanda stop snitching..

  • lihle.tshineka - 2012-02-10 14:54

The things we do for money! Short cuts are never a way to go... If you want money get a a proper JOB like the rest of us and you will enjoy the fruits of your labour at the end of the day! I'm younger then Babsie and Sulezi but I am making money by working hard at my job. We went to similar schools, have a similar back ground, have mutual friends and had all the opportunities to be whatever we wanted its a pity that they chose the wrong path.. I hope that we all earnt a lesson from this - making a quick buck can get you in loads of s**t... I feel sorry for Babsie's family though... No parent should watch their child rottttt in jail! :( *Really Sad*

      Marion - 2012-02-10 16:19

@lihle.tshineka... as parents we try to raise our kids to do the right thing in life and then one day we sit with the consequences of their actions because they thought they knew it all. I also feel extremely sorry for her family.

  • Olivia - 2012-02-10 15:27

    She's a LIAR!!

  • Nandi - 2012-02-10 15:49

Were did Babsie get all this money to travell those places if Sulezi Rwanqa betrayed Her.You need to tell the truth. 23 years behind Bars uyakuphuma so gugile. Just thank God Babsie you dont have kids otherwise they would have been going through hell.

  • Christina - 2012-02-10 16:29

Well we all want a good life, sometimes we work too hard and many years before we get what we want inlife. many people resort to quick cash which is risky because they want fleshy cars, menssions etc etc, because so an so have, sometimes you have to know the story behind the succesful people before you compare yourself to them, you will be surprised!!! at what you will find " hard work hard work all the way. easy money is never a solution to poverty. so to all the ladies who are still in this business, stop now before it is late. unfortunately Babsie learned the hard way. short cuts to riches does not work, only lead you to more poverty and pain to our families. i hope to GOD she gets a 2nd chance.

  • kgalalelo.malesele - 2012-02-10 16:30

  • Andre - 2012-02-10 17:12

  • Nyiko Ngobeni - 2012-02-10 21:03

    Who cares

  • Ken - 2012-02-10 22:51

Drug smuggling is illegal. Break the rules and pay the consequences.

  • nthabsh - 2012-02-10 23:34

  • Vusi - 2012-02-11 08:06

    she is a moron

  • Lingululwani Mashila - 2013-03-15 16:38

Sulezi you are a liar, If you had nothing to hide you should have gone to Babsie's family the moment you landed back. God will punish you greatly, I'm glad Babsie pleaded guilty and is showing remorse to what she has done, she might be in custody but spiritually she's free, you are out and spiritually in custody, how do you live with your self after such a big and fatal lie?
