Johannesburg - The body of an elderly woman was recovered at Boulders Beach in Cape Town, the National Sea Rescue Institute said on Sunday.

"It is unclear at this stage if the female may have succumbed to a drowning accident or if the female may have suffered cardiac arrest from a related medical condition while swimming," said Simonstown station commander Darren Zimmerman.

He said the woman - who had a known underlying heart condition - was brought from the sea after a bystander found her lying face down in the water.

Attempts to resuscitate her were unsuccessful and she was declared dead.

An inquest docket has been opened and a post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of her death.
