Johannesburg - A woman was killed and sixteen people were injured when a taxi overturned on the R509 between Derby and Magalies, the North West public safety department said on Sunday.

"The seventeen occupants were reportedly from a funeral in Zeerust driving back to Randburg when the Iveco minibus crashed [on Saturday] due to a tyre-burst near Dwarsfontein around 12:15," spokesperson Lesiba Kgwele said in a statement.

The woman was declared dead on the scene and thirteen passengers were seriously injured. The driver and two other passengers were slightly injured.

The injured were taken to Koster Provincial Hospital for medical treatment.

"Police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, and reckless and or negligent driving," said Kgwele.
