Johannesburg - A woman died in a fire at her home in Vosloorus on the East Rand on Friday, according to emergency workers.

Firefighters arrived to find that the community had used sand to try and contain the flames, said Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Services spokesperson William Ntladi.

Neighbours forced open the doors to gain access to the house after seeing smoke pouring from the windows, he said.

The partially burnt house was still smouldering when the firefighters got there, so they extinguished and cooled all the hot spots.

They then found the woman's body in a bedroom. She had been alone in the house at the time of the fire.

Ntladi said the police had opened an inquest docket. He said the cause of the fire was not known.
