Woman dies in failed farm robbery

2012-04-08 22:29

Johannesburg - A 64-year-old woman was stabbed to death by a young boy on Sunday during an attempted robbery at a farm outside George in the Southern Cape, police said.

It is believed the 16-year-old boy gained access to the house at Dagbreek farm through a kitchen window just after 02:00, said spokesperson Malcom Pojie.

The noise woke Charlotte Sroneman, who'd been sleeping. When she went to investigate, she was repeatedly stabbed in the chest, allegedly by the young man, said Pojie.

The commotion woke her husband, who'd also been sleeping, and he took his firearm before going to investigate what was going on in the dining room.

A fight ensued with the teenager and he was also stabbed. He, however, managed to fire several shots, wounding the intruder.

"The suspect was shot on the right side of his face and on his shoulder. He tried to flee, but he was arrested by police not far from the house," said Pojie.

Charlotte was declared dead at the scene while her husband was taken to hospital in a serious condition.

"The suspect is currently at a provincial hospital under heavy police guard," said Pojie.

    Another farm killing!

      johncarlos.biza - 2012-04-08 23:42

We are lucky to still have people willing to farm under these conditions.

      spartanx93 - 2012-04-09 07:02

I'd like to see how the government would react if all white farmers halted all farm production until something was done about this serious issue?

      jannie.beirowski - 2012-04-09 09:19

Thapelo, why? what do you want to achieve by another holiday? Do you want to create more days that farmers can be killed? Please explain to prevent me from making the incorrect assumptions.

      Irene - 2012-04-09 12:17

spartanx93 ~ It's the only way they would get a reaction. Taxpayers should without their tax as well, it's the only way to end the corruption of the ancancer scum.

At 16 and already with such killing mentality...time to wake up and declare war to such killings brutality...we are not safe in our own yards...teenagers are no longer interested in schooling...farms are attacked on daily basis as it stands...and yet I am still not free in the country of my birth...our police force are busy involved in scandals that doesnt serve the communities good...the minister is currently working on sweeping off the misused funds scandal...the national commissioner is currently in the courts...and now people are faced with death everyday of their lives...trully and I mean trully speaking...we are resembling Sodoma and Gomora... we are a failed state... we are totally doomed to failure...we are presented with poor political representation...we are a society in danger... greed has overtaken responsibilty...expensive lifestyles and mismanagement of state funds has kept our leaders too busy to accurately do the job in hand...we are therefore indirectly in denial to our own it is too ghastly to contemplate!!!!!!!

      Cosment - 2012-04-08 23:09

How can they go to school because malema promised them a farm and a mine

  • Chris - 2012-04-08 23:03

Moral of the story ... If you hear a noise at night ... DO NOT INVESTIGATE. Crawl under the bed and stay hidden. Let them steal your TV and your meat from your fridge. Your life is more valuable.

If you hear a noise, load your gun and wait for the bastards to come to you then shoot them in the stomach that should act a deterrant for future thugs.

  • Sharon - 2012-04-08 23:10

I looked at the related stories and it is truly frightening! Is this escalating? From where I am sitting, it certainly seems so. As a concerned and tax paying citizen I beseech the government to do something!!!!

      Irene - 2012-04-09 12:21

Banging your head against a brick wall would get a better result. Withhold your taxes, it's the only way to cripple them.

  • Melanie - 2012-04-08 23:19

you, i mean you the killers out there, use ur senses and think about this: the maizemeal u eat and full ur stomach then defecate is produced by the farmer, the meat that u chop daily with ur cabbage is produced by a farmer, the bread u eat with ur joko tea made out of wheat is produced by the famer, the milk u drink with ur ricoffy is produced by a farmer, that amagwinya u eat with achaar is flour from the farmer. Why killing them and their families ?? Why? Is it the best to thank a farmer by killing him? U rather spit on him than ending his life.stop this senseless barbaric 'thanks giving'

ENOUGH of these farm killings this is GENOCIDE PURE AND SIMPLE!

      Melanie - 2012-04-08 23:38

amen! If i knew the right channels, i would lead a campaign and target squatter camps/rural settlements and educate them how useful and worthy are farmers for our well being. Farmers work hard, they suffer 2 produce goods and sometimes they even loose capital and no profit..but they dnt loose hope, they continue to make sustainability 2 b there. Some1 out there must do something, and that some1 is us as community.

      Ian - 2012-04-09 06:56

      Jacqui - 2012-04-09 13:00

Melanie, just go to the first squattercamp or what ever and start. How far you will get is something else. The best thing would be for all farmers to leave, the United Nations can then come and feed the country and what the heck the ANC will still not be blamed.

  • teddy.molefe - 2012-04-08 23:57

      Tamane Pelo - 2012-04-09 06:05

it really is sad that WE as South Africans, instead of uniting in a joint effort to fight crime, we continually make it a race thing. Crime affects each and everyone of us, black, white, coloured and indian. This boy must be jailed for life, do the crime do the time.

      malcolm.molver - 2012-04-09 08:20

Oscar, when last was a black farmer killed? Provide us with some stats please. I bet you can't. White farmers are being targeted and that's a fact!

      Frank - 2012-04-09 08:56

Oscar, a black farmer is a figment of tyour imagination! They receive working commercial farms for free and destroy it in record time as there are no such thing as a black farmer....destroyers, yes, entitled fools, yes, farmers, NO!!

      Oscar - 2012-04-09 09:01

Malcolm86, I agree with you a 100%, I question was between the lines. Something must be done to get the ANC to agree to the fact that farm murders is the highest priority crime in the country. Unfortunately, farm murders is an exclusive white issue currently.

  • Cornelius - 2012-04-09 00:32

Our law will still protect the boy on the pretext that he's still young. What a shame! Legal age on serious crimes must be lowered to ensure criminals like this murderer face the music

      Jacqueline - 2012-04-09 06:38

The court can have him tried as an adult under certain circumstances. Not sure if it would apply here.

      Ina - 2012-04-09 09:44

@ Jaqueline, He will be protected no matter what, It is sad but true, he is going to be tried as a minor, and probably get off with a rap over the knuckles, assigned to his parents care, who should have brought him up better in the first place, and keep on in his merry criminal ways.It frustrates the living daylights out of me that the laws in this country protects only the criminals. Victims have really very little redress.

  • lskosana3 - 2012-04-09 02:33

I can't even begin to imagine how our farmers live their daily lives in fear, to be brutally murdered like this by a child that's supposed to be busy getting an education is just unthinkable! There's no shortcut to success my brothers, work your butt off. This entitlement mentality has to stop!

      Jacqueline - 2012-04-09 13:19

Seems 2 people are all for the entitlement attitude to continue.

  • mholthuysen - 2012-04-09 05:50

There you see ANC - that is why people are fleeing our country. The farmers who fled to other parts of Africa because of the continuation of senseless farm murders like this and now farm in Zambia, Nigeria, Mozambique and elsewhere on the continent - are also REFUGEES!

  • kdelange3 - 2012-04-09 06:35

Its more than 10 years ago that my brother in law to be was killed on a farm near George. The killings and murders have still not stopped. Each murder brings more heartache to another family, to the people around them and ultimately to all of us in South Africa who see what's happening.

  • Jacqueline - 2012-04-09 06:44

I no sympathy for this 16 year old. I have no idea what his circumstances are and I can honestly say, I could care less. I have reached the point where I don't do the "what was his reason" any more. It's time for some drastic action in SA. Talking and begging the government has gotten us nothing. I just wish I knew where to start.

      Michael - 2012-04-09 08:17

This is the tip of the iceberg. Many farm attacks, whether they are successful or not are never reported on. This is not just criminality, done for reasons of poverty. Don't agree with me? Why else would killers wrap an innocent little baby in newspaper and douse that with petrol and throw the match? Why torture women with a hot iron, taking sadistic pleasure from their pain and fear? Why shove a broomstick up a young woman with such violence that it exits through her shoulder? Think this is just sensationalism? Go check it out for yourself. But be warned, if this article upsets you, the magnitude of the problem will leave you shocked and reeling. Ignorant, impressionable and stupid people (I use the term lightly) are incited to commit these crimes by political leaders, who are literally getting away with murder. The Devil is laughing, his children are doing well

Why does a 16 year old kid kill an old woman? Why did he not just run away, like criminals used to. There is a sick mentality in this country, and it is fueled by the hateful comments of black politicians. They have poisoned the minds of people in this country, there is so much hatred now that I believe it is soon going to boil over. The only reason a kid would do a thing like this is racial hatred. The failed ANC regime is using racism to deflect there supporters from their failures, this is why they keep on feeding the racist cauldron. Its working - but not for long, the backfire is coming - something has to give, and when it does it will be with a bang. A big destructive bang!

The solution 2 this problem is for the educated citizens of this country. Both young and old,Black and white to join the anc and run over the current leadership. We can only succeed in taking over power while we ar inside the anc and change things for the better. It's more like running a democratic coup. Forget opposition parties for now..they ar not gonna succeed ruling national for a couple of years to come. The apartheid stigma is still within most of our african voters minds, coupled with lack of political education. So for them voting for a white faced party is like bringing back apartheid.

      Newsreader - 2012-04-09 09:20

Ishmael..... what sort of logic is that? Thats like building more toilets to get rid of the smell! You will NEVER get the whites to vote for the ANC! The sad reality is it was once an oppression of the majority who at the time were black. Now it is still the oppression of the majority who are indoctrinated by the current elite self entitled fat cats of the ANC that spoonfeed the rhetoric of 'Apartheid' returning as you do. Buddy, Helen Zille fought for you and the black majority to have equality. Now she is just a 'white party' leader who is of no significance to the black majority. As long as you dont see this you will always have what we all have right now in South Africa. A democratically elected dysfunctional government!

We going to know how many South Africans are willing to stand up against it….. Are we going to wait for another “Hotel Rwanda”?

  • Lwando - 2012-04-09 09:23

I am a black SA citizen, a manager in a big company and businessman as well (not a tenderpreneur but entrepreneur). I am not a member of any political organisation. For my own reasons, I don't vote although I have a right to, however I comment on politics as they govern us. I, (like everybody) would like to live in a country where crime is not the daily bread and is seen as something that affects everybody and believe me, we have lost our loved ones whether they are prominent or not through murder and it's painful. In my opinion, it is wrong to politicise or racialise murder when the farmer is involved one way or the other and yet we dont do the same when a homeless person, doctor, teacher or any other citizen is involved. Some commentators here use murder as their opportunity to indoctrinate people with their ulterior motives. I do not agree with the belief that murder is perpetuated by land issue as I believe the land of the murdered farmer is not given to the government, but the family member. I dispute the perception that the tax payers are only from one SA race group as we all do and I also dont believe that farmers are only farming to feed black people as some people portray it. Farmers don't give us food gratisand they also eat. Farming is for commercial purpose and there is a mutual benefit. I agree government has a huge role to play in crime fighting, especially in cross border. Have you ever wondered why vigilantism is on an increase in Townships lately?

      Sanele - 2012-04-09 09:31

Very, very well said. Crime affects us all!!!

      Newsreader - 2012-04-09 09:41

Lwando........if 10% more of the black population could think like you we would probably half the problem. Unfortunately its the general attitude of the majority of South Africans. The power of the vote is lost in the abyss of lack of knowledge, lack of education and certainly the lack of ability to be governed. If an 18 year old can leave school and start his adult life with high hopes to achieve a successfull career and make a life for him and his family. Why cant the present government even reach its age of progress. Its failing because it is corrupt, badly organised, nepotistic and certainly elitist for the very top few. I am not a racist but I wont vote for the ANC, EVER! As long as I live. Out of principal I would rather vote for Inkatha just because its not ANC. We are the people in the street who have jobs, homes and success. Yet neither of us vote! Then those who have nothing, no hope, no future, but do vote! Vote for the current incapable government. Its basic knowledge. Knowledge that comes from education, that comes from good governance. We are maybe at 2% of reaching that goal with what we have leading South Africa today.

      Bless Boswell - 2012-04-09 09:46

Lwando I don't think the general consensus is the taxes are paid by the white minority - we all pay tax in some form or another - (sadly, even the poorest of the poor pay tax in the form of vat). I think the fact that farm attacks are perpetrated by blacks, against whites makes it difficult not to place the blame for these acts at racism's door. The fact that the farmer feeds all and not just blacks with his produce is accepted but irrelevant, since, to the best of my knowledge it is blacks that perpetrate the crimes. In a recent post a young black person commented that he was tired of waiting - he wanted his mine and his farm - NOW. Surely, if there is this kind of thinking out there among the youth, then could the farm killings not be averted by some very quick, intelligent intervention where a rollout to the youth - a sort of myth buster program - where they are properly informed and assisted with what is obviously serious disinformation? They do not understand why they cannot get jobs - they have been to school so why can't they get what others have got? The youth is our future - to date they have been seriously disadvantaged by the very people who should be nurturing and mentoring them. Your thoughts?

      Koos - 2012-04-09 10:00

@Lwando: You yourself have probably read some of these “crimes” that are committed by blacks on white farmers. So tell me Lwando, if whites where committing these atrocities and doing these things to blacks, what would happen?

      Koos - 2012-04-09 10:06

Openly stating that race has got nothing to do with these crimes or the aftermath is foolish. Even more horrifying is stating that crime is crime. It is NOT and there ARE differences when comparing crimes by whites and crimes by blacks and there are definitely differences when comparing the aftermath. Ever noticed who always say that crime is just crime? There ARE differences when you are robbed by whites compared to when you are robbed by blacks. The government just made it law not to say so.

Esther, this is going to sound very harsh but here goes anyway ... Land given to black people has been allowed to lie fallow. The trees have all been chopped down and they have eaten all the livestock. Then they plead poverty for land to thrive it has to be worked, rotated, planted, watered, sprayed and harvested. Until the recipients of land work, the land will yield nothing but weeds and empty bellies.

"I feel that the reason that these crimes are committed are perceived as racist when in reality it is the poverty of the perpetrator which is the root cause of the violence. White people are the victims because they are perceived to be rich and have everything. Bear in mind too that this perpetrator is described as young and may well be the offspring of AIDS parents who has had no adult guidance and had to rely on survival instincts of kill or be killed. He was armed only with a knife but knew how to use it obviously and it is deeply tragic that vulnerable people such as farmers are being targeted but it does make a crazy kind of sense. People in urban areas live close together so it is more risky to target them as should your planned stealing go amiss there is more likelihood of capture. Farmers are also known to be armed for obvious reasons and sometimes its about better equipping themselves so that their returns may be improved through harder crimes. My condolences to the farmer in the loss of his wife and congratulations too on shooting him in the face and not killing him. He was wounded enough to be captured and hopefully fingerprinted and scarred for life making him more visible should the justice system fail,

I don't celebrate farm murder and also i don't have sympathy for it, cause i consider it a curse. Curse is the land that is forceful taken frm its owners and given for inheritance!

3000 farm deaths and far as Im concerned i couldnt give a F%&k what the motives are..The farming community is being wiped out. I find it really sad..the fact that a farmer, his wife and daughter were all murdered and their bodies were discovered by their 17yr old son.for a couple of Rand or even if that."Im commenting under this article because news24 closed the comment section for the farm murder article".. That teenager that attacked the family and got wounded in this article deserves everything he got..I hope he never recovers from his injuries!!!!

I more than just agree with Max and Stephan; if we do nothing about the matter, which has now reached endemic proportions, we shall forever be caught up in this process of systematic genocide; if these incidents qualify to be classed as genocide; it might be plain hatred from one group towards another, or it might be something that I'm not at liberty to say, but which a blind person can observe.

This whole story is just sad. Horrific for the family involved and so sad that someone so young can resort to the violence. I spent many a night on the farm next door to where this happened, and would never have thought of being in any danger. I live overseas, not to escape SA but because my job dictates it and it kills me every morning to read of the farm killing and the senseless murders! Every $$$ that I earn gets re invested into SA but I'm starting to think that maybe I should be keeping it outside before we lose it all in a country that seems to be going nowhere but downhill. I really hope that at some stage things will change but as long as the value of life is worth nothing I don't see that happening.
