Johannesburg - A woman was killed and a man critically injured after the motorbike they were travelling on collided with a car on the R563 in Hekpoort, north west of Krugersdorp, on Sunday afternoon, paramedics said.

"When ER24 paramedics arrived on scene, they found both patients lying on the side of the road in a critical condition. The wrecked motorbike lay some distance away on the side of the road," ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said.

"On assessment, paramedics found that both patients sustained severe injuries to the right side of their bodies."

Paramedics began treating the two people, providing advanced life support.

A medical helicopter was called in to transport the man to a private hospital in Johannesburg for further treatment.

"While on route to hospital, the woman's vitals rapidly diminished. Paramedics initiated CPR but unfortunately no vital signs returned," Meiring said.

"The cause of the collision is not yet known but local authorities were on scene for further investigations."

The woman and man were both aged 60.
