Woman drives around with snake for 2wks

2011-02-09 10:14

Port Elizabeth - A Sardinia Bay family drove around with a deadly boomslang in the cabin of their Isuzu bakkie for two weeks without knowing it.

It was Amoré Bekker's chat show on RSG which finally made the snake come out of its hiding place and create chaos in the vehicle.

Dalize Bekker, who had unwittingly been driving around with the snake, was still shaking on Tuesday when she told of her experience.

Bekker's brother, Gerdus, said their dogs had chased the snake under the bakkie at their smallholding near Sardinia Bay two Saturdays ago. "I saw it was an ugly one with evil intent but I just couldn't get him off the petrol tank."

After the Bekkers couldn't get him away, they gave up and hoped the snake would go away while they watched rugby.

It was only when he got a call from his hysterical sister on Monday afternoon that he remembered the snake.

"Dalize was jumping up and down next to the bakkie and shouted "shoot him, shoot him!"

Dalize said she was doing about 120km/h and listening to the radio when she saw movement out of the corner of her eye.

"I can't explain at all how I stopped and got out of the car. I only know that I got out a few times with the bakkie like a tortoiseshell to my back before I realised I was still buckled up."

About 15 police officials later arrived on the scene, but they stood back, giving advice from afar.

A snake catcher was called and three hours later the scared snake of about 1.2m was caught and freed.

  • h3fty1 - 2011-02-09 10:25

hehe - sounds like a Schuster prank, to bad it wasn't caught on tape, would've had millions of hits on YouTube... Happy the lady wasn't hurt though...

  • AJ - 2011-02-09 10:25

Althoughh poisonous, boomslangs are unlikely to strike out at you and would rather make a gap for it. I'd still kak myself though.

      Stryder - 2011-02-09 10:41

There fangs are also at the back of the mouth which means that most strikes are dry anyway.

      DW - 2011-02-09 15:48

A boomslang bite is the most dangerous as the antivenom is so hard to come by and is not available at most centres. For this reason you are most likely to die if one does bite you, but as you say they are less likely to bite successfully. Scary, though!

      Jaco - 2011-02-10 09:24

Not a single snake in SA is poisonous.... you can eat them all but yes some of them are venomous! Sorry but they got me with that one in one of my Field Guide exams. :)

  • GT - 2011-02-09 10:28

Exactly 2 people have ever died from boomslang bite, both were handling them. well done for not killing the snake.

      Guy Snelling - 2011-02-09 10:53

That was between 1919 and 1962 (wikipedia) and 6 other people almost died. What about the last 50 years? The boomslang is deadly and should be treated with respect. I'm also glad it wasn't killed, but if it's him or me, I'm choosing me.

      Megan - 2011-02-09 11:13

While they are considered to be fatally venomous the fact that they are back fanged and have very small mouths means that it's very rare for a snake like this to bite anyone, they are also usually quite docile. I am very anti snake killings. Still, if it had been me, the snake wouldn't have had time to even try and bite me, I probably would have written myself, the car and the snake off in a moment of pure terror - or I would have just had a heart attack right on the spot - I really am that brave :)

      Madelane - 2011-02-09 12:13

Exactly GT.....snakes are in very real danger from the serial killer that walks around on two legs....homo sapien!!!!

      Susannomore - 2011-02-10 13:08

Where do you get your information? While it is true that the majority of deaths from Boomslang bites are received by handlers, it is not true that only 2 people have ever died from bites!

  • Alfred - 2011-02-09 10:33

"I saw it was an ugly one with evil intent" Thats what I often say about spiders. And women.

      SAFFA-CAT - 2011-02-09 10:42

      And card carrying ANC members....

      LUNGELO YILI - 2011-02-09 10:46

@SAFFA-CAT at they least they go to heaven....hehehehehehe

      IandI - 2011-02-09 11:05

      CharlSkeptic - 2011-02-09 11:06

Nooooooo Lungelo - that's just the promise! After the vote, they will be dissappointed

      bokfan1 - 2011-02-09 12:59

Isn't that the name given to Helen Zille by the anc???

      Colin - 2011-02-09 14:58

ROFL Brilliant! I was about to comment on the "ugly one with evil intent" Gotta love the fact that they "went back to watch the rugby".... Chuckle.. At least for once an amusing South African story.

      Alfred - 2011-02-09 15:34

Lol! "Dalize was jumping up and down next to the bakkie and shouted "shoot him, shoot him!" Thats what I often say when I see Malema, Shivambu or Lungisa on tv.

      GT - 2011-02-09 15:40

Alfred - you say dumb stuff like that and bitch that Malema is getting taxpayer funded bodyguards

      Alfred - 2011-02-09 16:05

Ah GT, I'm just having a laugh mate. Besides, it's not hate speech. It's a "metaphor". Yup, thats what it is, a metaphor. I'm not really sure what that is but I'm going to stick with it anyways ;)

  • ApolloZA - 2011-02-09 10:34

    15 Police officials?!?!?!!

      twattums - 2011-02-09 10:38

They had nothing else to do.......

      Comrade Mike - 2011-02-09 10:45

They heard it was something ugly with evil intent and thought Julius was there.

      LUNGELO YILI - 2011-02-09 10:46

they were probably doing stomach-in chest-out exercises

      Ian - 2011-02-09 10:47

      Vissible policing i guess

      BrettPresent - 2011-02-09 11:01

@ Comrade Mike - sharp! jeez the comments on this story are making me laugh ;->>> happy the snake and lady (sounds like an evil Disney movie) are both ok...

      ji - 2011-02-09 11:03

the police heard cake and not snake

      Adrian - 2011-02-09 11:05

Yes it was a slow day in Eastern Cape - Only 55 murders and 80 rapes reported in previous 12 hours.

      Thor - 2011-02-09 11:23

JI... Well done I love your work...

      Grant - 2011-02-09 11:23

I would have told them that there was bribe-money under the seat! :D

      Flee - 2011-02-09 11:27

MMMM They were clearly not listening properly when the report came in... something on the lines of Free snack, not tree snake... LOL... OMGreatness glad they are both ok though... I would have hit something...

      Benny66 - 2011-02-09 11:44

@Twattums. And continued doing nothing at the scene!

      African'shtr - 2011-02-09 12:17

shoot to kill operation guys, so they were disapointed when they got to the sin only to find out that it's a snake.

      Colin - 2011-02-09 17:08

ROFL Isn't that brilliant? How the hell did they manage to get 15 Police officials out? Maybe next time I get broken into I'll call in telling them I have a boomslang in my bakkie, (Chuckle..Why does that sound like an Afrikaans Porn film?). It seems to get more of a response.

      sakkie - 2011-02-10 10:49

      @ji...LMAO !! good one mate........!

  • Singo - 2011-02-09 10:35

eish, they should have called the snake catcher the first time they spotted the snake. It shows their ignorance.Children play everywhere and around cars, it is possible it could've bitten one if it slipped out of the time you spot it, please call the catcher.

      inglorius b - 2011-02-09 20:16

I would assume like any normal person, they assumed that the snake would slither away into its natural environment. How can you say that the people are ignorant. The only person that sounds ignorant here is you from the sounds of your comment. Better to understand a situation, the object of discussion and then express your views.

  • - 2011-02-09 10:37

heheh thanks for the laugh would have slide out once I shat myself.

  • - 2011-02-09 10:40

oh my word! I would have had an accident 4 sure!

  • Sibusiso - 2011-02-09 10:52

About 15 police officials later arrived on the scene, but they stood back, giving advice from afar. hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha i like this line Mr. editor !!!!

      John Seloa - 2011-02-09 15:07

Normally they would have shoot to kill. but the snakes head is so small they knew they had no chance of hitting it. OR, they were shit scared to get closer.

  • Stefan - 2011-02-09 10:56

Reading through the comments made my day :) I am also glad nothing happened to both the driver and her "passenger" :D

      Fred - 2011-02-10 14:24

Nothing happened to the driver my arse, you don't have to clean hers or the 15 policemans underwear.

  • SaligSondaar - 2011-02-09 10:56

What on earth is "2wks"? Is News24 now reporting in SMS-speak?

      BrettPresent - 2011-02-09 11:02

      SaligSondaar - 2011-02-09 11:09

  • NommerEen - 2011-02-09 11:12

When you see a Boomslang, make like a tree and leave....

      SaligSondaar - 2011-02-09 11:21

Don't you mean "make like a tree and leaf"?

      NommerEen - 2011-02-09 13:01

Oops are indeed correct....(I'm trying to cut down on the "f" words :-) )

  • dadaman2com - 2011-02-09 11:21

15 police officials arrived at the scene for one snake how ironic, but when they is a robbery or a shoot they don't have vans available, that is SA for u land of freedom. - 2011-02-09 16:30

Next time you have a robbery/hijacking etc just tell the SAPS there is a boomslang in your house/car/threatening you and hordes of them will be on the scene in double-quick time.

  • Darwinian - 2011-02-09 11:29

Im just glad the snake survived.

  • Madelane - 2011-02-09 11:31

Um.....drove around for two weeks with this poor Boomslang. How many people did this "ugly one with evil intent' viciously attack and kill I wonder. Two weeks and no harm......wake up to the fact that this poor creature was no doubt terrified and would far rather have been in the bush away from humans and their predilection for killing everything.

  • Brenny2288 - 2011-02-09 11:39

My Jack Russel Killed one last week in my yard and we stay in the middle of a suburb. It was +- 1.5m long. My kids play in the yard everyday and you would not think that a snake would be in your back yard.

  • Mushin - 2011-02-09 11:50

Its actually the government's's the ANC......golden handshake..... I would've said to the powpos, I forgot my licemce at home but i have something for em under the sit.

  • May - 2011-02-09 11:53

15 cops .. wow ... no crime anywhere what a joke.... when I was in the fire service ONE fireman went out and caught the snake!! OK that was 15 years ago when the uniform service had balls!!

  • Keith - 2011-02-09 12:08

Hippos kill many more people in Africa, so be thankful it wasnt a Hippo!

      AJ - 2011-02-09 12:53

      baggins B - 2011-02-09 13:50

how do you get 4 hippos in a car? 2 in the front and 2 in the back

      Flee - 2011-02-09 13:56

Baggins... the question is how do you get them out LOL......

      piet.strydom - 2011-02-09 14:21

How do you get a rhino in the bakkie? Take the hippo's out...

      vee - 2011-02-09 16:16

what does she mean she got out a few times before she realised she was still buckled up??strange

      Alfred - 2011-02-09 15:38

I think it means she was crapping herself so badly it took her a few attempts to get out before she realized she was buckled up. Probably a good thing though, emergency exits from a vehicle travelling at 120kph on the highway rarely end well.

      Corry - 2011-02-10 13:11

Alfred, FFS!!! Now I have coffee all over my laptop. ROFLMFAO

  • johnstonel32 - 2011-02-09 15:55

it never ceases to amaze me how 99% of stories, irrespective what they are about, end up as a mud-slinging back and forth on politics - it was a fcuking boomslang - not white-not black-not racist-not white supremist- not Julius Malema (even though the comment of 'an ugly one with evil intent' also brought Malema to mind) - it doesn't support the ANC - people it was a green snake who know nothing about colour/creed or politics! but ... could someone please explain how the bakkie was like a tortoise shell on her back?? mr reporter seems to have confuzzled it up somewhere

      GogoGranny - 2011-02-09 18:05

@johnstone132. Lighten up my man! Yes, I agree almost anything written somehow turn towards poiltics, but WTF! You read "snake", immediately the word ANC springs 2 mind. Then the word "evil", makes one think of the one with the pitched fork who cooks people, remind you of anyone's recent comments? It was an ugly snake, doesn't the name Julius srpring to mind? The snake ws green - ANC colour? Do you get my drift fellow SAFFA. The comments are hilarious, I am ROTFLMFAO. And in these godforsaken times here in the good old R S of A, we all need a good laugh else we'd just curl up and quitely creep into a little corner and die. This is what life has become in the "land that once was."

  • Mbongeni - 2011-02-09 16:08

you are sick !! quickly seek medical advise, precisely for your damaged brain !!!

      Fred - 2011-02-10 14:33

May not have been green, boomslangs can vary from yellow to brown to green and all the shade inbetween.

  • lekkerlag - 2011-02-09 21:49

You must be kidding me,"15 police officials arrived on the scene".i mean like really for a just a mere snake...and the worst part they stood back...wht a disgrace.

I'm glad the lady and the snake escaped unharmed. Otherwise this is a very funny story.15 Police and not one could catch a snake .. alive anyway. I agree it would have done very well on YouTube. This story just proves that RUGBY USUALLY WINS THE DAY! Forgetting about the ugly snake could have turned out very nasty indeed.

  • Colline - 2011-02-10 09:21

Uncle Wassie says good thing it was a boomslang and not a rinkhals. Have seen both in action and alive and the boomslang is the one I would prefer to be in a bakkie for 2 weeks with. The Rinkhals on the other hand is one where if i saw it i would jump out the bakkie before even pressing the brake. It is a agressive and dangerous to be enclosed with. The boomslang may be venomous but you can handle it with care and it is not agressive. The rinkhals would have attacked and killed the dogs and then gone into the bakkie to finish you off if it got a chance.
