Durban - Mystery surrounds the death of a woman who survived a car accident only to plunge to her death from a bridge on Adams Road in Amanzimtoti in the early hours of Sunday morning.

It would appear that after surviving the crash, which resulted in the car coming to rest in roadside brush, she clambered out and then climbed over the guardrail of a bridge to relieve herself, before falling nearly 10 metres to the ground below.

Tow-truck driver Bobby Hale, who was at the scene of the accident, described the incident as harrowing.

“The two ladies had hit the pavement with their car and both had climbed out and they were fine. The one girl went and sat in a tow-truck and the other was walking around having a cigarette and she said she wanted to go to the toilet,” he said.

“I had told her to go behind her car, but the next thing we knew she was climbing over the barrier. One driver reached out and got her jersey, but it wasn’t enough and she fell. It was one of the most hectic things I have ever seen in my life,” Hale, an ex-firefighter, said.

Netcare911 spokesperson Santi Steinmann the woman’s body was found at the foot of a bridge nearby.

“The woman was found lying below the bridge near the railway tracks. It appears that the woman fell from the bridge to the ground below. Upon assessment, paramedics found that she sadly passed away prior to their arrival and she was declared dead at the scene,” Steinmann added.

Police have yet to release her identity.
