Johannesburg - A woman has been arrested after a newborn baby was found dead in a plastic bag near a high school in Kagiso on the West Rand, Gauteng police said on Thursday.

The woman, 27, was arrested on Wednesday, said police spokesperson Solomon Sibiya.

"The suspect was arrested after members of the community informed the police that she was seen expecting a baby a few days ago, but could not say where her baby was."

She allegedly confessed to the crime.

Police received complaints about a baby found in the veld near Mandisa Secondary School on Friday. They found the baby's decomposing body in a plastic bag.

Police could not immediately say how long the baby had been there for, or what the cause of death was.

The woman would appear in the Kagiso Magistrate's Court on Friday on a murder charge.
