Johannesburg - The 29-year-old woman in whose fridge four dead babies were found appeared in the Mthatha Magistrate's Court on Thursday, the National Prosecuting Authority said.

"She did appear in court and the case was postponed to 18 February for further investigation," said regional spokesperson Luxolo Tyali.

"She was kept in custody. She has not pleaded at this moment."

The four bodies were found in the fridge in New Brighton, Mthatha, on Saturday by police acting on a tip-off.

They had to break into the house because the owner was not there. Her backyard tenants told the police she was in Johannesburg attending a funeral. The woman was arrested on Tuesday.

"She claims that she is the mother of all four babies, but we don't agree with her and DNA tests will be done tomorrow [Wednesday]," Colonel Mzukisi Fatyela said.

According to the post-mortem, a shoelace was found tied around the neck of one of the babies, which indicated it was strangled, he said.
