Was any of the drivers taken into custody. I am going to ask this question as I feel it is important that every single person is treated the same.

I shouldn't generalise but based on what I've seen and experienced I hate ALL taxi drivers.

Condolences, to deceased and what I'm about to say I say with respect to the dead. After 25 years of having my licence and driving our roads I have personally rescued on 3 occasions passengers out of mini taxis in separate incidents. One of the incidents my interactions saved a life. I'm finding it difficult these days to understand why the hell the passengers allow this lawlessness driving from taxis to continue, BECAUSE IT SUITES THEM to get to where they need to get. They flag taxis down anywhere anytime with no consideration as to how it disrupts traffic following the taxis. The people whom I've asked say that the drivers are abusive , so 13 passengers can't put 1 driver into order ? If there is a will there is always a way but if there is no will then there are excuses ! These continuous deaths in taxi incidents are I'm sorry to say , a product of what their passengers/clients allow! Again, I pay respects to the dead.

You right Walter, all the passengers care about is that they arrive early to their death than being late for the destination.

I would agree with you Walter ... many times the passengers dictate what the taxi drivers end up doing. Passengers are dropped off and collected on the M1 motorway ! I mean, where else but South Africa does this sort of thing happen ?

You are so wrong! I had to catch a toyota hi ace taxi 2 get 2 work on time and us passemgers in the taxi used to freak out when the driver turned down a one way and the driver swore at us! This happened just about everyday with different taxi drivers! What were we the passengers supposed to do? Wrestie the steering wheel off the driver? Catch a wake up!

      Walter Rocha - 2015-03-24 08:51

Colleen , "catch a wake up" "what were passengers suppose to do" I think the way to do it would be pretty obvious to any one with a brain cell , explaining it to you however may be like administering medicine to a corpse . Pointless!

I would like to know what the government is doing about this. If they are doing anything, then it is at a snails pace. The biggest driver of the recklessness is the way that the fares are collected(I recommend the tagging system as opposed to cash). Because of the complexity in determining precisely how much money the taxi will make in a day. The taxi owners have resorted to a daily minimum check-in amount. As a result, this gives way for the drivers to start work at the crack of dawn, drive like mad and try to make the minimum amount by midday and thereafter they start making money for themselves on the side. Unless this model is reviewed and the industry regulated. I doubt if we will live to see a change in the behavior of the taxi drivers in S.A
