Johannesburg - A woman is in a critical condition in hospital after poisoning herself and her three children in Mthatha, the Eastern Cape health department said on Sunday.

"She said the grant money she was receiving was not enough," said spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo.

"The one-year-old boy is in a critical condition, and the two girls [seven and 10] are responding well to treatment," he said.

The incident happened at the Pola Park informal settlement, near Mthatha, on Saturday night.

It was not known whether the 28-year-old woman was married, said Kupelo.
