Johannesburg - The body of a woman was found in the sewer system in Lehurutshe outside Zeerust, North West police said on Sunday.

"It is suspected that the victim was raped before she was murdered," said Sergeant Kelebogile Moleko.

"According to information the deceased was found naked, had bruises on her body, her face was swollen. She was also bleeding from her mouth and private parts."

The woman was identified as Kedifentse Mogale, 26.

Mogale and her two friends from a college in Lehurutshe went to buy some drinks at a nearby garage on Friday night.

"It is alleged that the three came across two unknown men on the road and they harassed the ladies. The two friends managed to run away from the suspects and Mogale was left behind."

Mogale's friends reported the matter to the police and a search was conducted. Police received information of a dead body at Lehurutshe Sewerage in Unit 1.

A case of murder was opened and police were searching for the two men.

A post mortem would be conducted on Monday, at Bophelong Hospital in Mahikeng.
