Johannesburg - A 35-year-old woman was rescued after she was swept out to sea by rip currents on Thursday at East Beach in East London, the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI) said.

Spokesperson Craig Lambinon said that when the rescuers arrived on the scene they found the woman was already rescued.

"It appears that... [a] man had rescued the female and on getting her to the beach he had attempted CPR (cardio pulmonary resuscitation) efforts," he said.

"During these efforts, according to eye-witnesses, the female coughed up water before starting to breath spontaneously."

The woman was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical treatment.

Lambinon said it appeared that a group of people had partied on the beach throughout the night and the incident happened in the early hours of the morning when some decided to go for a swim.
