Woman shot, stokvel money stolen

2011-12-12 12:12

Bloemfontein - A Free State woman was shot and wounded by two men who robbed her of stokvel money, police said on Monday.

"The woman was attacked on Friday afternoon by two unknown men who shot at her and took her bag containing R 26 000 in cash," Warrant Officer Malebo Khosana said.

The money was supposed to be shared among the members of her society as they normally did in December after saving for the year, Khosana said.

The attack happened at her house in Doornpan, Thabong, as she arrived home from the bank after withdrawing the money.

"She sustained a gunshot injury on the right arm and two on the right side of her torso... It is not clear at this stage how many shots were fired at the victim.

"We have registered a case of armed robbery for further investigation and are on the track of the two men," Khosana said.

The woman, 41, is in a stable condition in hospital.

In September, three people were arrested in connection with the theft of stokvel money near Mthatha in the Eastern Cape.

Two women, aged 37 and 41, were members of a stokvel group who were robbed of R130 000 by two men. The robbery occurred when the members were about to share the money among themselves.

Police recovered R15 000 of the stolen money when they arrested a 40-year-old man in the same village. They also confiscated an illegal firearm.

Shamefull!!! Damn animals. I'm sure this lady did not deserve this in the least! I'd hang them...

      Yusuf - 2011-12-12 12:47

I hope the community gets them before the police

  • Kay - 2011-12-12 12:28

Only a case of armed robbery? what about attempted murder??? Breaks my heart wish i was a billionnaire id give everything to the poor

      Jay - 2011-12-12 12:41

      No you wouldnt!

      Jeffrey - 2011-12-12 14:12

I'm poor. Remember me if you become a billionaire.

  • Vuyo - 2011-12-12 12:28

Why did she not transfer the money into the account of each member , or is it a matter of touching and feeling the money , or to appease the ancestors . This is something that could have been avoided , if they followed the safety precautions . It is just unfortunate

      Rainbow - 2011-12-12 12:47

My thoughts exactly Vuyo. To many people loose their life savings and other monies because they refuse to use the bank. Then againg with the ridiculous bank charges now days can one really blame them.

      Gees - 2011-12-12 12:53

The banks are the biggest thieves of the lot, while not so clever walking around with that much money, I understand the logic.

      Mildly_Amused - 2011-12-12 13:53

I'd gladly lose a couple of hundred rand to the bank if it means that I'm going to be safe... Just saying.

      Gees - 2011-12-12 14:06

@mildy, that couple hundred you talk about, per year I assume, could feed a poor family for a week, or buy a school uniform, again not clever to walk with that kinda cash, but it can be seen as money up in smoke to some

      Mr Kcopah - 2011-12-12 14:20

Vuyo dude, not all people are as well informed about other banking avenues as your average literate citizen, and certainly not your average stokvel old lady, it is also quite pathetic that you chose to insult us (those who believe in ansestors) with "appease the ansestors" as this article is about Stokvel money. it is this behaviour that cause havoc in this country. Please respect other people's beliefs however bizarre you may find them.

      Ntombizonke - 2011-12-12 14:37

@Vuyo the stokvel is played by the gogos they dont have accounts, but why she was alone cos they usually be 2 of the stokvel to accompany her.

      kerrimg - 2011-12-12 14:56

not everyone has a bank account

      Kopraal SilverStar Mohloli - 2011-12-12 19:01

  • Nitesh - 2011-12-12 12:29

      StarStruck - 2011-12-12 12:40

That is the question we all ask. Well to be honest not all. Here are far too many corruptable souls amongst us with the moral values of a fruitcake.

      Gees - 2011-12-12 12:54

don't knock the fruitcake, specially at christmas time

  • StarStruck - 2011-12-12 12:29

Bring back the death penalty, Pleaseeee!!!!

      planetdonovan - 2011-12-12 12:45

the death penalty is not the answer, especially not in a corrupt justice system.

      StarStruck - 2011-12-12 12:57

So we should all just accept that value for life is worth nothing more then a few thousand rands bacause hey we are all free?

  • Hangwani - 2011-12-12 12:46

    Inside job

  • hgriesel1 - 2011-12-12 12:51

Do the people never learn... I don't even carry R100.00 on me. R26 000.00 is looking for trouble... Indeed, there are animals out there...

      StarStruck - 2011-12-12 13:02

And yes everyone is fortunate enough to have a street name where they live for the ability to open a bank account. Sorry to say but your logic was not fully applied to you comment.

  • Craig - 2011-12-12 12:53

Big brave criminals hunting in packs with guns .. Till you catch one, disarm and have a 'little talking to' They squeel like pigs .. Cowards rot in hell !

  • Kala - 2011-12-12 13:01

The only thing getting cheaper in this country is the cost of human lives.

  • RobertaKeeling - 2011-12-12 13:07

And how did the gangsters know she had all that money? Once again - inside information from someone in the bank?

      Ntombizonke - 2011-12-12 14:39

@Robert maybe inside job in the Stokvel? You will never know.

  • brionyl.french - 2011-12-12 13:14

very shameful and sad because this sort of saving that works for some isnt insured like if they had put in an account and someone transfered the cash to each member in the group

  • brionyl.french - 2011-12-12 13:17

Who watched Carte Blanche with the farms in Brits and them patrolling their own properties and helping each other out like a community we need to do this... we are not safe anywhere, and if every area had everyone protecting and being observant maybe less criminals will be able to harm us... just a thought...use it dont use it... but we only as safe as we make it and even then we not safe...

  • Phumezo - 2011-12-12 13:37

If the banks were freindly and not exploitatives towards our people there wouldnt even be a need for a stokvel! We will forever call for our government to fasttrack the gains of the freedom charter to nationalise the banks and other monopoloy industries!

      Blade - 2011-12-12 13:55

You are so stupid Im surprised that your brain reminds you to breathe.

      Tia - 2011-12-12 13:56

As much as we would all like to see a lot of promises by the government put on fast track, (some are years old!) I don't foresee that happening in a hurry! Let's see what they can do about the criminal's first shall we? Then we would not have to worry about a lot of things!!

  • chizgal - 2011-12-12 14:03

sounds like a conspiracy to her home nogal?? it wouldn't raise eyebrows if she was attacked straight from the ATM...i mean, for all we know one of the members is responsible for this attack. Sad that our elders aren't familiar with technology/electronics, she could've EFT'd, or requested the bank to help her share the moola amongst the members.... Glad that she's alive price money is enough to replace a soul..may she get well...and the robbers will be dealt with by the Heavenly powers.....!!!

  • yolokay - 2011-12-12 14:40

Stokvels are a great idea but people should seriously consider using safer means to transfer the cash... It's sad because they've been saving for it the whole year, but it's also a big lesson for future periods...

  • noelhlungw - 2011-12-12 14:45

The writings are on the wall , one of the member of the stokfel knows the whole stories.

  • Zizi - 2011-12-12 14:49

    Inside job!

  • Chabie - 2011-12-12 14:55

it's an inside job some of the members of tht stokvel alerted those thugs

  • kerrimg - 2011-12-12 14:56

its an inside job they are aware this was being drawn or they told someone this was happening. hope she has a speedy recovery.

  • Omnivore - 2011-12-20 14:44
