Woman shredded in lawnmower accident

2011-02-11 13:24

Pietermaritzburg - A woman's attempt to surprise her husband by mowing their lawn landed her in hospital after she suffered a freak accident at their Howick home this week.

Susara Kusel said her husband had shown her how to operate their ride-on lawnmower and she wanted to surprise him by trimming the lawn herself for a change.

“I had forgotten some of the instructions so I decided to consult my neighbour, Kemsley Woods, to help me familiarise myself with the lawnmower so I could cut the grass before my husband returned from Vryheid,” said Kusel.

She said that while she thought she had mastered the art of using the lawnmower after her neighbour’s instructions, she mistakenly pressed the accelerator instead of braking.

“I thought I had engaged the reverse gear on the machine when I accelerated, but it was not so. As a result the lawnmower went straight down the bank and I tumbled down with it.”

She said she suffered concussion and she is still baffled as to how she survived being shredded by the sharp blades.

“I was fortunate because the incident occurred in front of my daughter Natasha who had been watching me. She called the ambulance which came to my rescue,” said Kusel.

She was taken to Medi-Clinic and admitted for further medical treatment. She said a CT scan was done to check for other injuries.

When The Witness visited Kusel on Thursday, she was preparing to go for surgery to assess the damage to her right arm.

Worried about lawnmower

“When all this happened the only thing I worried about was the lawnmower because I was trying to do something good for my husband, but I ended up causing more problems, and I am very sorry to him for this.”

She said she is grateful for the support she has received from family, friends, members of her church and the hospital staff.

Kusel is an artist and restores old furniture. She is praying that her arm will heal fast so that she can continue with her work.

She said she is a fighter and vowed not to give up on her attempt to master the lawnmower.

To avoid such accidednts please all woman stay away from any motorised machinery including the blender.

      Hans-Erik Iken - 2011-02-11 15:29

I don't believe you guys. Will you make the same sexist comments when those accidents happened to men? I think not. I know plenty women who are extremely capable at things that are supposed to be 'male' jobs and who have no need for a man to do those for them. I am fortunate to be married to one so we can divide the tasks evenly around the house. I am glad the woman in this article came through allright and she shows spirit and determination in her wish to master the mower anyway. Good for her. As for female pilot comments: in many western nations you will find women in the most chalenging pilotjobs such as fighter pilot and helicopter pilot (such as the Comanche and Apache) and in combat roles as well. I bet none of you wisecracking smartalecs is capable of that.

      4daluvofSA - 2011-02-11 15:44

@Hans, toptip - when deviding the tasks, please make sure that you keep the lawnmower to yourself. We would not like to see a similar article anytime soon..:-)

      Barry M - 2011-02-11 16:27

      @Hans-Erik Iken - Name one!

      Great White - 2011-02-11 16:56

Lighten up Hans. The guys are just taking the piss. Don't go defending women's rights, they do well enough without us. Next you'll want full empowerment and WEE. Be careful what you wish for...

      Krush - 2011-02-11 16:58

Okay ladies (I'm female) it's all a bit of humour, just relax for goodness sake and laugh at yourselves a bit. So what if men are better at parking etc. Who cares? There are certain things men are better at and certain things women are better at, leave it at that.

      Nice Guy - 2011-02-11 17:08

This is the result of letting women out of the kitchen

      Susannomore - 2011-02-12 07:01

Yes, we have to give you guys a break for 1 month of the year. Don't let us stop you though, continue as normal if you so feel.

This woman deserves a medal! The dream wife... she should teach the rest how to mow lawns... :-)

      Ryno Rousseau - 2011-02-11 14:02

Not to judge, but if all women got taught by this shining example of skill, the human race would suffer a very rapid decline and eventual extinction.

      CatvonH - 2011-02-11 14:41

more than likely she was so tired of asking him to do it, she dit it herself. Unfortunately it backfired. I take my hat of to her. I prefer paying other people to do these things!

      Ingie - 2011-02-11 14:47

123online - wot do you mean 'she should teach the rest how to mow lawns'? I've been married to my hubby for nearly 30 years and in that time he has mowed the lawn ONCE - and I had to show him how to do it! And yes - I was also working full time etc etc. Cheesh . . . you men!

  • DeadWorld - 2011-02-11 13:57

"Woman shredded in lawnmower accident"? Sounds like nothing should have been left of her...

      pawsaw - 2011-02-11 16:38

I agree that the headline is entirely misleading! Woman's arm shredded by lawnmower" would have been more accurate if less newsworthy.

      Great White - 2011-02-11 17:06

'She said she suffered concussion and she is still baffled as to how she survived being shredded by the sharp blades.' The headlines read; 'Woman shredded in lawnmower accident' Sterling job, Mr Journo.

      Susannomore - 2011-02-12 07:05

News24 trying desperatly to get us to read the articles written by journalists they rereatably put on their payroll. Notice all the "SHE SAID" and other useless information. Why do we (myself included) continue to supprt such drivel???

Contender for Darwin Awards 2011 - Best survivor of Domestic Accident. Qualifying criteria: Woman driver. Woman trying to mow the lawn. Woman thinking she could operate machinery. Woman thinking. Woman mixing emotions with all of the above ("she wanted to surprise him by trimming the lawn").

      Styvies - 2011-02-11 14:53

FAIL - she survived, can still procreate and already has a daughter. Do you know the requirements for the Darwin Awards?

  • Lisa - 2011-02-11 14:06

Why all these comments? I hope you recover well so that you can get back to business and maybe mow the lawn one day:)

      Ryno Rousseau - 2011-02-11 14:10

You expect different results? Please consult Einstein's definition for insanity (Its FANTASTIC). I expect another hospital trip, perhaps a pet funeral, or surprise demolition.

      AGENT - 2011-02-11 14:11

      Lisa - 2011-02-11 14:18

Ryno, get back to the subject. Your aim is to criticize woman here..go play on a different playground buddy!!

      Ryno Rousseau - 2011-02-11 14:23

Incorrect, my aim was to amuse myself with this woman's stupidity. And now it to point out how your argument is flawed. See how you avoid my question?

      Lisa - 2011-02-11 14:50

You are interpreting his definition in a different context. This is something she could learn how to do and become great in. How can you call it stupidity? This accident did not happen due to a lack of intelligence. I am not in the mood for this sort of childish debate or whatever you want to call it. Go join a chat site.

      watalife - 2011-02-11 14:58

Lisa you must stop playing with your husbands/boyfriend/toyboy laptop and get back to the dishes. leave the men to sort out the more complexed issue in life.

      Ryno Rousseau - 2011-02-11 15:02

How is the context different. Same action, yet you expect different results. Sounds like the same context to me. To address your point of "she could learn how to do and become great in", clearly that is not the case. Her husband showed her how to do it. Her neighbour showed her as well (i'd wager within days of the incident), yet she STILL managed to make it a catastrophic failure. Therefor, your argument is flawed and I reject it. The point stands.

      AGENT - 2011-02-11 15:12

Lisa you are the type of radical womans lib person I'm not willing to try and even have a conversation with, why should we go join a chat site ? what are you doing here ? ....... get back in the kitchen before hubby shortens your leash.

      Ryno Rousseau - 2011-02-11 15:16

Lisa stop multi tasking, you are going to end up causing an accident.

Someone needs to go look up what 'freak accident' means. When you are unfamiliar with the equipment and you use it incorrectly and you get injured it is not a "freak" accident at all. Merely a completely predictable conclusion.

  • Grant - 2011-02-11 14:23

"I was trying to do something good for my husband, but I ended up causing more problems, and I am very sorry to him for this.” now he probably has to cook his own food whilst you are dilly-dallying in the hospital! DAMN, Woman!! :P

Isn't that how prayer works? You delude yourself to such a radical extent that you bend reality? Or are you referring specifically to a monotheist religion where a wizard does it for you?

That's why all machinery have safety instructions included. I know of some men that can't operate a drilling machine safely. I teach my wife the safe way and I don't have to worry and she can still cook afterwards. Ten to one she was out shopping every time he did the mowing and never paid attention to what he does and try to learn how to do it safely. Even if you google "ride on lawn mower safety" you will find the right way to do it. BTW 37000 accidents in US alone.

With such a pretty smile on the face of Susara Kusel, it is evident that she is a good humored lady and I bet you she is now laughing herself silly with all the great comments, as it is true that there is a strong Healing Power in Laughter. And for those of you getting hot in your brookies, lighten up on your warped humorless emotions and accept that if you can laugh at tragedy, imagine how you will laugh at great moments. I almost pissed my pants laughing while reading the comments, but luckily I was wearing may nappy, like my dear wife insists when reading News24 articles.
