Johannesburg - A 60-year-old woman and her son were found dead in their home in Azaadville, west of Johannesburg, Gauteng police said on Tuesday.

"It appeared to be a robbery as the house has been ransacked. The two have been strangled judging by deep marks on their necks," said spokesperson Warrant Officer Solomon Sibiya.

"Police are still trying to find out what is missing from the house."

The son was 35-years-old.

Sibiya said police were also looking for a domestic worker who it seemed had disappeared.

"A domestic worker, who is a Malawian national, is missing. Her passport, cellphone, and other belongings were found in her room," he said.

According to Eyewitness News, the house was robbed while the husband was away at mosque.

Six men are reportedly on the run.

Neighbourhood Watch member Aadil Desai said he believed the suspects fled in a silver car which may have been a Honda CRV with a Cape Town number plate.

A case of murder and robbery has been opened.
