Woman's arm amputated after dog attack

2012-06-07 18:06

Johannesburg - A woman lost her arm when she was mauled by a boerboel in Uitenhage on Thursday, Eastern Cape police said.

Lieutenant Colonel Priscilla Naidu said the woman was attacked while walking in Vanes Estate at about 08:00.

"It is believed the boerboel ran out into the street and attacked the woman," she said.

Naidu said a neighbour heard the woman's screams and tried to help, but was also bitten.

"The woman was rushed to the Netcare Cuyler Hospital, where her right arm was later amputated," Naidu said. She was in the hospital's intensive care unit.

SPCA inspector Koos Croucamp said the owner of the boerboel had asked for help in taking the dog to a vet.

"We only took the boerboel to the vet, where the owner met us. We don't know what is to happen to the boerboel," Croucamp said.

Shocking,,why was the dog roaming free. Surely a dog like that should be behind a locked fence. Luckily it was not a child. It would've been far worse. Hope she has a speedy recovery.

      janet.mcdonaldbelstead - 2012-06-08 09:29

@currie - does that include the two legged kind that carry on like "wild animals"? Some humans are worse than pets!

      Tamaranui - 2012-06-08 16:34

Yes Yes yes Janet that includes Kotze,

I feel for everyone involved the problem is crime people are trying to protect themselves by any means possible as the state is failing us badly.

      smiley.stonearch - 2012-06-07 18:31

      Well said sir!!

      jaysonpaul.beckwith - 2012-06-07 18:50

Spot on mike. There is obviously someone out there that doesn't like you. Cause your comment is 100% correct...Now I wonder who that could be?????? Any clues??

      stanton.clarke - 2012-06-08 02:28

Tamaranui, Australia's mining industry is far more efficient than South Africa's. We used to be ahead of the Australians but they have since overtaken us...I wonder why? Anyway, imposing a tax hike on resources would only discourage FOREIGN INVESTORS. Perhaps some day when we attract the necessary investment and producton is up, then a tax hike would be more appropriate!

      Rob - 2012-06-08 10:02

jaysonpaul...The ones we need protecting from are the thumbs downers !

  • smiley.stonearch - 2012-06-07 18:27

Dam I cant believe it wasnt a Pitbull!!

      itsdedphukenezi - 2012-06-07 22:44

Why a Pitbull, has the media brainwashed you as well? With any dog it boils down to the environment the dog is living in, and certainly the manner it is raised. The saying that there are no bad dogs but bad owners is a fact. As with racism and sexism, you are guilty of breedism.

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-06-08 06:22

I happily leave my kids in the company of my friend's pittbull - one of the most gentle dogs with children that I have ever met. Doesn't like cats much though.

      Philip - 2012-06-08 07:23

Smiley... It all depends on breeding and how the dog is raised, i have a pitbull x staffie and he is the most amazing dog with my wife and i and my 6 month old daughter. he is however trained to protect us and my property and luckily so, he has bitten people, but only those that enter my garden unwelcomed. last month our neighbors had a break in during the day, they tied up their domestic worker and raped her repeatedly. they then failed at their attempt to kill her, took some of the stuff from the house and fled. they tried to get over my wall and would have succeeded if not for my dogs. i have a wife and 6 month old daughter, what do you think would have happened to them? it is a sad but true fact that we need viscious dogs to protect us and the ones we love.

      Heynz - 2012-06-08 08:26

OH PLEASSSSSSEEEE smiley.stone-age i mean stonearch I am a PROUD pitbull owner and believe me she will kill you with love and affection - dont be like the so many thousands out there that is so caught up in this stigma that pitbulls are monsters - beacuase they are not - blame the humans raising these dogs that behave badly - I also am the proud owner of a boerboel my dogs has never ever attacked any kind of life form its how you raise them

  • Marios Stavrinou - 2012-06-07 18:29

leave the dog alone, dogs are treated badly enough , a a human kills a dog and its nothing and then all of a sudden a dog bites a human and its something , just leave the poor thing alone it doesnt understand english

  • gift.rode - 2012-06-07 18:44

A human life seems to be less than that of an animal nowadays since people seem to have simpathy for the dog than the victim who lost a limb

      Jane - 2012-06-08 09:52

I am sure that every one on this forum as sympathy for the women, it is a terrible, life changing thing and is no way her fault, she has all the right to be walking in the road, the only person to blame here is the owner/s who did not ensure that their dog was being kept in a secure yard. We also had a lovely family dog, but unfortunately he didn't like strangers, so we made sure he had no way of getting out of the yard and when visitors came we would put him on the other side of the house, in no way was it his fault, he had been rescued from an abusive home. PLEASE can people use their common sense when owning a pet, the same applies to all the dogs running without a leash on mountain trails and beaches, yes your dog might be the most gentlest family pet that you trust with your children, but sometimes something might upset them or trigger them off for whatever reason. Please be a responsible pet owner.

  • songezo.kilani - 2012-06-07 18:45

@tamara i agree wt u 100%, or the owner should face charges of aggravated assault. In the state a couple were arrested for murder after their dog (Rottweiler) killed their neighbour, due to negligence.

      Tamaranui - 2012-06-07 18:58

It's just common sense, I have and love dogs however if not properly trained the Owner must face the consequences. My dogs would never attack anyone at anytime or in any location. Remember a couple of months ago, all the detractors were disparaging the victim, 24 Hrs later they were eating Humble pie, this may be part 2 of this particular trilogy. Seems common sense ain't common anymore.

      Charnelle - 2012-06-07 21:21

Yip, kill the dog, it will bite again! Also DONT HAVE A FLIPPEN BOERBOEL IF YOU CANT KEEP IT IN THE YARD. YOUR IRRESPONSIBLE!! MORONS! I would be frigging peeeeed off if that was me, my child or may nannie.

  • Magome - 2012-06-07 18:48

I believe that the dog has to be put down "killed" not taken to a vet instead!

      Philip - 2012-06-08 07:27

Magome, and where exactly is the owner supposed to "kill"the dog? catch a wake up you idiot, he cant just shoot it in the street, if you want to put an animal down, you take it to the vet, like civilised people do. we dont ust drop rocks on its head or drown it these days, get with the times you chop!

      Heynz - 2012-06-08 08:32

      Magome the dog was PTS

      Jane - 2012-06-08 09:54

Dont be a savage Magome, this isnt the township where we kill animals in our back yards, or stone animals in the road. We take our pets to the vet to be put down! Totally agree with you Phillip.

  • Zenzile Tshanda - 2012-06-07 18:54

should have looked the dog in the eye and tell it to sit down. never run away!

      Philip - 2012-06-08 07:29

Zenzile, i would like to see you try that with my dog... he only listens to 2 people, me and my wife. staring an aggressive dog down without knowing what you are doing could get you into even more trouble, its a sign of aggresion, a challenge if you will.

      Jane - 2012-06-08 09:56

NEVER look an aggresive dog in the eyes, unless you want it to rip your face off!

  • Luyanda Sibeko - 2012-06-07 19:00

kill the dog and jail the owner

      Heino Meyer - 2012-06-07 20:13

What led up to the attack. Dog could of bean provoked in resent days.

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-07 21:50

As Mike said, there are so many criminals that part of personal security is to have vicious dogs to protect you and your family.@Luyanda, I was attacked in my house whilst sleeping and if it was not for the dog, I would have been a statistic now. So hopefully it will not happen to you so I am pro vicious dogs!

  • angela.monaghansandells - 2012-06-07 19:10

I live in Uitenhage. What difference does it make what race this poor woman is? She has suffered a terrible ordeal and the whole situation is tragic. Just to shut you all up, the lady is white. Apparently the dog escaped and it has attacked her before. Why does everything on this forum have to result in racist bs comments. Read the story on

  • Bokfan - 2012-06-07 19:39

If it turns out to have been a non-black who was bitten the anti-white racists will be laughing.

      Carla - 2012-06-08 08:40

What does racism have to do with a dog attack??? Is the dog now racist??

  • Ted - 2012-06-07 20:18

Totally unbelievable schadenfreude. A lot of people here have barren consciences. How possibly could this sad event be converted into a racial football? Just imagine yourself without the hand you are using to put a thumbs down on this message.

  • sludeke - 2012-06-07 20:28

Don't blame the dog. Blame the stupid pathetic owner of the dog, who didn't socialize the dog when the dog was young. I have 3 boerboels who will lick you to death, why because I socialized the dogs since 8 weeks to human and to other dogs. Also I looked at my dogs bloodline and background and bought them from register breeders and also only after I saw the mother and father. It's these backyard breeders crossing dogs who are giving boerboels bad names. Go look on Gumtree how people advertise boerboels x mastiffs .. boerboels x rotweillers ..... boerboel x Greatdane ... boerboel x bull terrier ..... Wish these animal shelters wants to start taking action against these backyard breeders. My heart goes out to the lady and hope she recovers quickly. DON'T BLAME THE DOG BLAME THE OWNER.

      Cindy Mendes - 2012-06-08 00:45

Very true, I agree 100% socializing is very important when it comes to any breed of protection dogs,... If the owner took the dog for training he/she would have had more control over the dog... It's not the dogs fault!!! He did his job and that is to protect... She was just in the wrong place or she did something to p@ss this dog off... We will never hear the full story or know what went through the dogs mind at that moment except that he did what he was breed for... Hope the lady recovers soon...

      Heynz - 2012-06-08 08:36

sludeke i could not have said it any better - what happen to this poor women is terrible by why blame the dog for his actions he he was maybe raised not properly - I also love my boerboel to bits and the best of all is those nice wet kisses only a boerboel can give

  • donnanetto - 2012-06-07 20:29

The owner of the dog needs to be punished not the dog. The dog should have been kept in a secure garden where is cannot escape to prevent this from happening. When u decide to get a pet then that animal is your responsibility and you have the responsibility of making sure that its properly taken care of. The dog doesn't get to choose the environment in which it lives so it is unfair to destroy it because of the owners negligence. The dog doesn't understand but yet you are all so quick to shout out to destroy it but then when it is a human being (who knows perfectly well the difference between right and wrong) that goes around murdering and raping others for valuables then we must think about their rights and what hardship they went through because of being previously disadvantaged. This is a sick world we live in when one life is more valuable than another.

  • j.c.s.mailbox - 2012-06-07 20:39

May the Boerboel be shot as soon as possible!!

      Nicolaas - 2012-06-08 03:11

@DOMJC, Please recuse yourself from this platform for intellectual people as soon as possible. You clearly display your lack of education. The dog act upon instinct. Perhaps the lady did something to the dog previously and as you very well DO NOT KNOW, dogs do remember those who did harm to them!

  • Charles Skosana - 2012-06-07 20:40

I really feel for both the owner and the victim,as for the dog it's just an animal that happened to follow it's animal instincts untold to do so or unprovoked, but someone needs to take responsibility...

  • Mike Purchase - 2012-06-07 20:40

    Well said Sifiso.

  • shubnam.patel - 2012-06-07 21:27

How badly did the dog bite her hand tht they had to amputate. In south africa, goverment hospitals and clinics don't wana look into the problem /or too lazy to look into the problem so they just I'm tellin ya its true...specially low economic areas

      angela.monaghansandells - 2012-06-07 21:59

She's in a private hospital. Glad you think anyone having their arm amputated and going through trauma is something to \lol\ about regardless of what hospital they are in. Quite insensitive.

      Harry - 2012-06-07 23:21

They should rather amputate the ding dongs of all the rapists, but unfortunately their ding dong rights are protected in this wonderful country.

  • Heino Meyer - 2012-06-08 00:09

I cant beleave some of you. Race has got nothing to do with the whole story. It is pathetic how it always seems to crawl into a situation. More care should of been taken so that this unfortunate accident did not take place.

  • Cindy Mendes - 2012-06-08 00:24

It is sad about the women but not sure why people want to kill the dog? If nun of u have noticed we live in SA a country full of crime!!! People in SA have dogs like boerbulls for protection and he did what he was breed for and that is protect... We in SA are all so stressed and our animals feel our emotions and they will react on it... This lady just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time... If only they would be so quick to eliminate "kill"

      Cindy Mendes - 2012-06-08 00:28

If only they will be so quick to Eliminate "kill" our murderers, rapist and child/animal abusers...

  • Cindy Mendes - 2012-06-08 01:20

Limpopo rapist gets royal treatment for raping a 16 year old girl and you people wanna kill a dog for attacking a lady and the best part is the poor animal has noooo clue that he even did wrong, dogs don't sit and think like us humans about what they did for the day as they live in the now... He has even forgotten that he had bit her... Don't kill the animal- the owner should just take him for training so he will have better control over the dog in the future... They can contact SADTC ( south africa dog training collage) as they work with animals like this and help to rehabilitate/ reshape them...

  • marsupelami - 2012-06-08 09:02

Really people, before blaming dog and owner, look at it from all angles, someone else could have opened the gate or an electric gate could have malfunctioned and opened by itself- this happens a lot. Yesterday some idiot was provoking my dog through the gate, trying to slap him etc just for the fun of it, dog went ballistic. When we shouted the man ran away. So if my dog bit his arm off yesterday or pulled him through the gate and mauled his face, who's fault would it have been? Mine? my dog? Shocked at some of these comments.

  • dannielle.j.upton - 2012-06-08 09:16

WHY IS IT ALWAYS THE ANIMALS FAULT??????????????? you dont know exactly what happened dogs dont just attack for no reason!!!!!!!!!! oh and curriemafia people like you roaming the streets should be put down!!!

  • - 2012-06-08 10:23

These ppl who say the dog should be killed.....have you forgotten the other news articles of dogs saving lives??? Infact a BOERBOEL saved a young boys life not so long ago. Please think before u judge ALL BOERBOELS. The only person to blame is the owner because we take responsibility of our animals.
