Woman's burnt body found

2013-02-20 21:35

Johannesburg - The charred remains of a woman were found in an abandoned house in Thabeng village, said North West police on Wednesday.

Brigadier Thulani Ngubane said the body, thought to be that of a 25 to 30-year-old, was discovered on Tuesday.

He said the neighbours saw a fire on Sunday night at the house, but thought it was children playing.

"On Tuesday morning, the neighbours [detected] a smell coming from the house and they went to investigate. Police were alerted and summoned to the scene and found the body covered with corrugated iron," said Ngubane.

The corpse had been burnt beyond recognition.

"It was her breasts and the toes that helped in identifying her as a woman," said Ngubane.

He said police discovered a beer bottle next to the body, which suggested she might have been drinking with other people at the house before she died.

It was unclear if the woman had been raped.

A case of murder was opened.
