Women come out in support of Bonnette

2012-02-10 09:18

Modimolle - Women from all walks of life - young and old, black and white - sang and danced in solidarity outside the Modimolle Magistrate's Court on Friday ahead of the appearance of Johan Kotzé and his co-accused.

Friends wore pink T-shirts in support of the alleged victim, Ina Bonnette, 42. A group of teenage girls were dressed in denim shorts and white T-shirts bearing pictures of hearts and the words, "Vir Ina [For Ina]".

Her friend, Elize Coetzer, told reporters Bonnette had received a threatening phone call in Afrikaans on Thursday afternoon, but did not go into details.

When Kotzé arrived in a police van, protesters outside the court became rowdy, shouting at the "beast" to stay in jail. He is accused of masterminding an attack on his estranged wife and the murder of her 19-year-old son Conrad.

ANCWL applauds bravery

A group of ANC Women's League (ANCWL) members in black skirts, green tops and ANC caps sang "Asoze aphele amandla" (we will never give up our strength, we will never give up hope) loudly outside the court.

They carried posters reading: "Kotzé and cronies must face the music", "Real men don't kill" and "No bail for Kotzé".

Several men also stood watching as police guarded the area with the court gates still closed. A police Nyala was parked outside the court gate and police officers with riot gear were setting up.

ANCWL spokesperson Troy Martens said: "The Women's League would like to applaud Bonnette for her courage and bravery throughout this ordeal. She has shown incredible courage and we applaud her.

"The ANCWL will be there every step of the way. We know the court processes aren't easy after an ordeal of this nature, but we want Bonnette to know she has the support of all South African women."

Martens said no one deserved to go through what Bonnette had and her attackers' punishment should not be lenient.

Kotzé faces 17 charges including rape, murder, conspiracy to rape, kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. On January 3 he allegedly ordered his three workers at gunpoint to gang-rape Bonnette and mutilate her body with objects including nails, pliers, a grinder, and a screwdriver. He is further alleged to have shot her son Conrad Bonnette, who was lured to the house.

National Prosecuting Authority spokesperson Mthunzi Mhaga said on Thursday there was a possibility of a bail application for some of the accused.

"And if so the State will be ready to proceed."

Kotzé was arrested after being on the run for eight days. His three co-accused - Mmapuru Peter Mohlako, 34, Andries Paparona Sithole, 42, and Sello Frans Mphaka, 38 - were arrested within days of each other. They had apparently been hired to remove palm trees from the garden of Kotzé's rented home.

Bonnette had reportedly taken a restraining order out on Kotzé when the relationship soured.

Would you die if you get a sense of humour?. The situation is not funny. But me trying to explain that to stuck up little redneck like yourself will be a waste of my time.

  • marge.fourie - 2012-02-10 09:39

Maybe he should get bail. With the ANCWL waiting outside. That will be in the same league as what he has done

  • Adri - 2012-02-10 09:44

If he gets bail, I'll be waiting with an Acid bath and watch him melt away slowly.

  • ian.rundle1 - 2012-02-10 09:49

Frankly the only suitable penalty would be hanging.

      claudia.thackeray - 2012-02-10 10:00

Hanging will be too easy for him. He should be made to suffer severely little by little. Drain the life out of him...tap,tap,tap....

  • AyGeewils - 2012-02-10 09:57

This demonstrates how united all the peoples of SA are against crime in this land - especially rape, murder and child abuse - just a pity he can't get the death penalty!

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-10 09:59

If they released him outside that court - not sure they would find anything to bury ...

  • Ian - 2012-02-10 09:57

  • Paul - 2012-02-10 10:00

"Its times like these that we learn to live again" I hope that Ina Bonnette can do so. And its times like these for which we should have the death penalty!!

  • Other - 2012-02-10 10:15

May he rot in hell. I hope the judge grants him bail and he suffers mob justice at the hands of his victim and her family and friends. Death is too good for this piece of rubbish, a good couple of weeks of torture before death would be good.

  • Sazi - 2012-02-10 10:19

Just shows that crime does not discriminate, it can come in any form or shape...This is one battle that unites us all.

      AyGeewils - 2012-02-10 10:29

Very very true Sazi and so it should be.

  • Hermann - 2012-02-10 10:23

How wonderful to see no racism in this show of solidarity. Gives South Africa hope.

  • carolyn.dewrance - 2012-02-10 10:31

Throw him and his cronies into an abandoned mine then seal it, making sure that they cannot get out, leave them there to starve to death, even possibly eat each other. Bastards all of them.

  • wesselw - 2012-02-10 10:34

i would love to get this "sub human" kotze and his cronies in a room alone, with a whole hardware worth of tools to try out on them. It is, however, an inspiration to see woman of all walks of life standing together.

      Jaco Niehaus - 2012-02-10 11:11

  • phangolicious - 2012-02-10 10:43

    "There is hope"

  • elvira.hattingh - 2012-02-10 11:19

I never thought I would say this, but hats off for the ANCWL and for Bonette.

  • Ann - 2012-02-10 11:19

The strength and bravery of this woman and the support she is getting from all sectors of South African society is an inspiration and shows that we can unite as one. Viva Ina Viva ANCWL and every other woman and man who are supporting her. Stay strong

  • Cat - 2012-02-10 11:34

Why on earth is Ina Bonnette refered to as the "alleged" victim?! There is no doubt that she IS the victim of this atrocity! Her attackers haven't been convicted yet, which makes THEM the alleged attackers. Or did I get it wrong, and there is some doubt that she was attacked and mutilated?

  • customdesign - 2012-02-10 11:36

If we can get such unity in South Africa across racial lines then it gives me much hope for this country. I think that is the legacy Mandela left for us. Kudos to the ANCWL- now if the ANCYL can follow suite it would be great.
