Cape Town - Women have an essential role to play in bringing about social justice, Public Protector Thuli Madonsela told a packed Stellenbosch University lecture theatre on Thursday.

Madonsela, who was the speaker at a women's month event hosted by the institution's Women's Forum on gender issues, received a roaring welcome from the students and staff who attended the lecture where she emphasised the role women play in transforming the country.

Charlotte Maxeke, Helen Suzman and Cissie Gool were among the women lauded by the public protector as being "ahead of their time".

"They were not the only ones. There have been many women in this country who have taken on the system and society to embrace social justice," she said.

"There are even those whom I call heroes, who continue to push the frontiers of freedom to ensure that everyone enjoys ... quality of life ..."

She described Stellenbosch businesswoman Wendy Appelbaum, a driving force behind the recent High Court ruling in which garnishee orders against 15 consumers were declared unlawful, as a "modern Robin Hood".

"She takes from the rich and gives back to the poor," she said.

"Women globally have crusaded for equality and social justice. I can count thousands. And the majority don’t have streets named after them."

Madonsela urged women to "not look the other way" when faced with injustice.

"Ubuntu is about me and you working together to create a better world," she said.
