LOCAL rugby officials are hoping the crowds defy the weather conditions and arrive at Woodburn Stadium in their droves for tonight’s Currie Cup friendly between the Sharks and the Golden Lions.

Midlands Rugby Sub-Union president Piet Herbst said yesterday that he had been encouraged by the response from the public.

“We have sold quite a few tickets already and we are hoping to attract a crowd of about 5 000. All the proceeds are going to amateur rugby in the province and our clubs are in desperate need of support.”

Herbst said the forecast had been for a cold and wet evening — “but we are hoping that is not the case and that the weather plays ball”.

The friendly kicks off at 7 pm and tickets are selling at R60 for the grandstand and R40 for the banks.

Meanwhile, the MRSU has attracted the biggest names in South African rugby to a fundraising breakfast to be held at the Royal Showgrounds in Pietermaritzburg next Thursday.

Herbst said SA Rugby Union president Regan Hoskins, who is a product of Pietermaritzburg, Springbok coach Heyneke Meyer, team manager Ian Schwartz, Sharks CEO World Cup-winning captain John Smit and Craig Joubert, one of the leading referees in world rugby, would take part in a panel discussion.

The topic will be next Saturday’s Test against Argentina and the looming Rugby World Cup. The breakfast starts at 8.30 am in Hall 2 at the Showgrounds.

Tickets are on sale at R250 a head or R2 500 for a table of 10. The breakfast has been arranged to raise funds for the MRSU who are struggling to cover the costs of running the Woodburn rugby complex for the clubs.

“We run the stadium on behalf of KZNRU but we only receive a small grant and receive no financial assistance from any municipal departments,” said Herbst.

Contact the MRSU at 033 345 7183 or at mrsu@xsinet.co.za for tickets for the breakfast.
