Wreckage of missing planes found

2011-08-16 08:30

Cape Town - The wreckage of two Albatross planes were found early on Tuesday morning, Search and Rescue SA’s Johnny Smit confirmed to News24.

He said that rescuers were being hoisted down to the wreckage “as we speak” to look for survivors.

The wreckage was found in the Mamotswiri Peak region.

The planes went missing on Sunday after leaving an air show in Tzaneen and heading for an airport in Gauteng.

  • Tolerant - 2011-08-16 08:33

    This is sad, RIP.

      Mkateko - 2011-08-16 09:00

We dont know if any 1 is dead yet.

      Spaffy - 2011-08-16 09:03

Everyone is so sceptic. Without hope you have nothing...

      McDaNife - 2011-08-16 09:05

Lets hope there are survivors wait for the next report to come in.

      DeonL - 2011-08-16 11:05

We know now, everyone has died.

      Francois - 2011-08-16 11:11

Always interesting how everyone can be so positive when two planes with a few people flew into a mountain, but when a whole country and the safety of all it's citizens are at stake, then they are intolerant and flippant. Condolences to the families of those that have died. May there be survivors.

  • stargazeraisling - 2011-08-16 08:36

:( very sad - condolences to the families.... RIP

  • ANDREW - 2011-08-16 08:39

    may the rest in peace

      Ingie - 2011-08-16 09:17

Why do you say this when we dont know yet if they are dead or survived

      Daryl - 2011-08-16 17:20

The article and the photos contradict each other. "He said that rescuers were being hoisted down to the wreckage “as we speak” to look for survivors" AND "All 13 people on board two Albatross planes that went down on Mamotswiri Peak in Limpopo are dead"

  • Bra Pat - 2011-08-16 08:40

Why do we always get half report, now the suspence kills me. Anyway we pray for them found alive

      GinSA1 - 2011-08-16 09:11

Maybe because that's all the news they had........ They said that rescuers were being hoisted down 'as we speak', so rather they get there and then report than give half-assed info as they did yesterday, saying the wreckage had been found, then deleting the article. And for all those saying RIP already, isn't it a little advanced, based on the above?

  • nobokjoy - 2011-08-16 08:41

My condolences to those who have lost LOVED ones in the tragic flight.R.I.P.GOD giveth and GOD taketh.Be strong,He heals all wounds.God Be with the families.

  • Verbatim - 2011-08-16 08:42

This is a sad day for the aviation community. Condolences to the families of those left behind. We toast our hearty comrades who have fallen from the skies, and were gently caught by God's own hand to be with him on High. To dwell among the soaring clouds they've known so well before. From victory roll to tail chase, at heaven's very door. As we fly among them there, we're sure to head their plea. To take care my friend, watch your six, and do one more roll for me. — Commander Jerry Coffee, Hanoi, 1968.

      Janine - 2011-08-16 08:58

      DeonL - 2011-08-16 09:32

Ingie, chances are getting slimmer by the hour to find anyone alive.

  • Dani - 2011-08-16 08:43

very very very sad and so sorry to hear - but what went wrong? how did this happen? did the 2 collide?

      mecan - 2011-08-16 08:54

Mamotswiri region mixed with the weather we have been having, my guess would be mist. I lost a friend from mist 10 years ago - their helicopter went into a mountain on the way back from Sabi-Sabi. This brings back horrid memories. So sad…

  • Sir-Vic - 2011-08-16 08:43

My Condolences to their family in this difficult time. May their soul rest in peace.

      Ingie - 2011-08-16 09:19

How can you say this when they dont even know if the are deceased or miraculously survived

  • Pieter - 2011-08-16 08:45

Please God...Let them be found alive!!

  • lynette.phillip - 2011-08-16 08:46

So sad to hear that there are no survivors.

      Spaffy - 2011-08-16 08:58

      I don't recall reading that...

      tony - 2011-08-16 09:08

      Nor do I!!!

      GinSA1 - 2011-08-16 09:13

Provide the link please Lynette - are are you a psychic? Geez, what is wrong with people? The probability, in my humble opinion, with this weather and the cold, is that there probably aren't survivors, but until confirmed, hell, shouldn't we be hoping at the very least?????????

      Ingie - 2011-08-16 09:20

Where did you read this are you perhaps psychic!!!!?????

      Poloyatonki - 2011-08-16 09:23

"no survivors." where did you read that?

      Vanessa - 2011-08-16 09:24

@ GinSA1- Yes we should hope Nicely Put :-) - That is the only way to have faith. People are already saying R.I.P, they are bringing it amongst themselves. This is people we are talking about. I say we all hope and pray that they are all okay.

  • Narisha - 2011-08-16 08:46

This is so sad. Condolences to the families.

  • spiderkzn - 2011-08-16 08:47

      Vanessa - 2011-08-16 09:25

Where have you heard that they have died already?????

  • Lloyd - 2011-08-16 08:48

Dont say RIP until u have the final answers. Hopes and Prayers are what the families, friends and the ones involved need.

  • Shaun - 2011-08-16 08:49

Very sad to hear the news that no surivors found and my condolences to all the friends and family of the one's lost in this tragedy. To loose 2 planes it seems like it was collison between the 2 considering the weather conditions at the time as well and the terrain they were flying over on the way back to Rand Airport - 2011-08-16 08:52

where did you hear that there are no survivors?

      MissGremlinSays - 2011-08-16 08:58

Have heard two separate news reports (radio) that confirm there are no survivors.

      Tolerant - 2011-08-16 09:03

The first report this morning stated no survivors.

      Spaffy - 2011-08-16 09:05

And yesterday you had radio news report that they found the planes... Can't believe everything you hear.

  • Billy - 2011-08-16 08:50

Reaaly sad indeed, condolences to the families! I was listening to some YFM earlier this morning and can one believet that some breakfast show host was making jokes about these missing planes, how pathetic and insencetive our media people have become! It's scary...

      Vanessa - 2011-08-16 09:26

I WOULD REPORT THAT GUY AND MAKE HIM PAY!!!! If it was HIS family, he would not be making jokes. I really wish you knew his name for me, so I can give him a wake up call myself.

      tryanything - 2011-08-16 13:28

YFM is a sowetan daily sun type of station..

  • Bra Pat - 2011-08-16 08:52

Does wreckage means people died, coz this report says they still going down to look for savivors

      Ingie - 2011-08-16 09:23

Wreckage means the plane parts..and does not mean that there are no survivors

  • Nic Holmes - 2011-08-16 08:53

Thats really hectic. I feel for the families and for the rescuers who are going in to see if there are any survivors. Its never easy going into that situation knowing you most likely coming out with the worst case scenario.

  • Celeste - 2011-08-16 08:56

Andrew, our thoughts and prayers are with you and the family. May God give you strength, peace and comfort during this awful time.

  • Smindlo - 2011-08-16 08:57

can somebody shut down Rand Airport please!!! too many near misses at that place and the noise from the micro planes in just unbearable.

      Verbatim - 2011-08-16 09:00

Yes, and while you are at it, please close the taxi ranks at centurion mall and the ones in Pretoria and JHB please. Too many accidents and the noise of the blowing horns is unbearable.

      Allin - 2011-08-16 09:01

While they do that can they shut your face too?

      Smindlo - 2011-08-16 09:03

@Verb, you idiot, one of these days the planes are going to collide and fall onto the neighbourhood. dude, lambton is like 100M from that airport and most of the guys are amateur pilots, so I dont understand what you on about!! go on, go close the taxi ranks, I dont really give a rat arrse!!!

      Astaroth - 2011-08-16 09:03

@smindlo: What does this have to do with Rand? They were on their way there! Your post bears no relevance! Retard!

      Smindlo - 2011-08-16 09:04

@Allin, you more than welcome. try it please!!!

      Ettienne - 2011-08-16 09:26

Please, while you are at it also close OR Tambo, Kempton Park and Boksurg are just as close to the runways. And also bare in mind that YOU chose to live next to an airport that was built long before most of the houses in that are were. If you chose to live somewhere, rather do proper research of your area than complain about it.

      Victoria - 2011-08-16 13:19

Actually, according to several pilots Rand is a very dangerous airport because it is surrounded by built up areas. If they have a problem on take-off there is very little space for them to manoeuvre without coming down on a building somewhere.

  • Martin - 2011-08-16 08:57

Lets all just wait for more facts before making any comments on vague details... Currently only fact is that wreckages have been found. Nothing more.

      Spaffy - 2011-08-16 08:59

  • tony - 2011-08-16 08:59

  • The_Rock - 2011-08-16 09:16

Mkateko get real how many times do people survive a plane crash

      Spaffy - 2011-08-16 09:34

      more than you would think.

      DeonL - 2011-08-16 10:26

  • Petite - 2011-08-16 09:18

Thank God! let just pray there are survivors...

  • BirdMadGirl - 2011-08-16 09:18

It's a little strange that both planes went down... Was there any communication with those on the planes before they went missing?

  • sarie.katzke - 2011-08-16 09:19

May the Lord be with all the families and hold them in His loving hands. This is very sad.

  • Lerato - 2011-08-16 09:20

  • justme...again - 2011-08-16 09:28

We lost a friend when the Italtile plane went down near Plett in February. I think the uncertainty, the waiting, is the worst.

  • King - 2011-08-16 09:29

    So did the collide?

  • SGL - 2011-08-16 09:30

This is really tragic. My thoughts and prayers go out to all the families and friends. I pray there are survivors and that the cause of the collision is determined. RIP.

Cayllex. Pray and hope that God do not come and visit you or your family, cause he can wipe you out in less than a second. All you others , pray well wishes for those left behind. God's will has been done. Let us abide by that. They are in a better place now. Pray this do not happen to you.

  • Insightful - 2011-08-16 09:53

Sad news. In retrospect though, For a change, I do not see arguments about white/black; ANC/No ANC. Does this mean we can only agree to agree when people die or planes crash?

  • Tanja - 2011-08-16 10:01

It kinda becomes more personal when you know the family of people on board, every ticking second we are praying for a miracle so people can be re-united with their loved ones. Until then please lets all stand together and pray.

  • CraigColinRoyMcLeod - 2011-08-16 10:07

lets hope there are survivors, and lets hope those who passed away did so painlessly/instantly. Condolences to the family and friends of those involved in this terrible tragedy.

  • AN - 2011-08-16 10:11

  • Hugh - 2011-08-16 10:52

oh please when you hit a mountain at 175 knots an hour there are no survivors. When the say " hoisted down" this means very steep conditions.
