Youth shot for playing music too loud

2013-12-01 17:04

Johannesburg - A man shot and killed his neighbour's son and wounded two friends in Alberton for allegedly playing music too loud, Rapport newspaper reported on Sunday.

Retired estate agent Dave Ridgeway, 66, allegedly hid in Peter Robertson's garden in Brackendowns.

When Robertson, 19, arrived, he was ordered by Ridgeway to lie on the ground. Ridgeway then fired three shots, one of which hit Robertson in the head, according to the newspaper.

Robertson's friend Calvin Main was also shot in the leg, while Jonathan de Freitas managed to miss the third shot.

Ridgeway then attempted to flee, but fell in the pool, where he repeatedly tried to shoot himself in the head but failed because the revolver was wet.

The 66-year-old was taken into police custody.

Suicide note

Upon investigation, a detailed plan and suicide letter was allegedly found on his laptop.

Ridgeway was divorced and faced financial problems. This prompted him to move into a guesthouse next to the Robertsons four months ago, according to the report.

He had continuously complained to the Robertsons about the loud music that Peter played in his car and inside his house.

"I think that life got too much for him and he wanted to take his frustrations out on Peter and I," said the teenager's father.

A friend of Ridgeway reported him to the police in September after he threatened to kill himself.

She said police could have avoided the tragedy, but instead did nothing about it.

Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the police's information showed that he wanted to shoot himself and not harm anyone else, the newspaper reported.

    Sad situation...

      Gary Guy - 2013-12-01 18:53

Just shows what can happen if you are arrogant and don't respect your neighbours rights! Speculation maybe, but I'd bet a few bucks!

      MeAgain - 2013-12-01 20:48

Come on Gary, the guy had more issues than the kids music. He just decided that while he's committing suicide why not end one frustration in his life. I don't know how bad the music was but if you are planning on suicide, why take a kids life for playing his music too loud.

      randomhero6661 - 2013-12-01 22:30

Jared, what you on about? The music culture has lost it's credibility, it's all about two step and baseball caps... It's the epitome of our youth and you smack bang in the middle of it.

      Pete Steyn - 2013-12-01 23:32

      Jared, you little w@nker!

      lifeofguenter - 2013-12-02 01:57

Jared: judging by your post you are the only one here who needs to grow up. We are all in the same boat and live in one world - you are not alone - so please always consider others with your actions. Listening to load music in the car while you park in front of your house is just pathetic and hilarious

      Hayley Griesel - 2013-12-02 06:32

@Jared. I'm not old but I have 2 small children. Every time some selfish idiot plays his/her music loudly it wakes them up which means that I then can't sleep. I don't condone what this guy did but I can sympathize with him. Anyone who plays their music that loudly in a residential area is a nuisance and a disturber of the peace.

      Poloyatonki Kgosi - 2013-12-02 08:54

Ben.. If your son plays his music loud, will it be ok with you if I kill him?

      Ric Comment - 2013-12-02 09:05

@Jared - You will be old too one day my friend, and then your comment will come back to haunt you many times over.

It is sad you are getting blamed for someone else's stupid comment too. Mark Hadlow is totally out of order.

Mara what is this world coming to

  • Bernard Ngwira - 2013-12-01 17:27

Stupid Ridgeway, he should hve killed himself. Someone should take him down even in police custody.

      Tuyez - 2013-12-01 20:18

It so sad that a young life is take like this. Condolences to the family. But I also think this serves as the warning to the arrogant young people who are so inconsiderate to other peoples except their music. Respect other peoples.

  • Jonathan Woods - 2013-12-01 17:28

Regardless of race group, too young people today lack respect and common decency. And it is time it changed!

      Non Conformist - 2013-12-01 17:37

With a bullet to the head?! How is that decent and respectfull?

      Robin Stobbs - 2013-12-01 17:39

Must say, this man has my sympathy. Noise pollution is one of the most insidious, aggravating and senseless forms of anti-social behaviour.

      Erna Westdyk - 2013-12-01 17:50

People, stop making excuses for the guy - he is guilty of premeditated murder.

      Non Conformist - 2013-12-01 18:43

So am I wrong in thinking that homicide is a "most insidious, aggravating and senseless form of anti-social behaviour" ?

      Tevin Li - 2013-12-01 19:58

So calling the police on someone who makes noise is too mainstream for you. FFS what is wrong with you people. HE KILLED A 19 YEAR OLD. SHOT HIM IN THE HEAD. God forbid someone does that to your kid for playing loud music. You explain to this kid's dad that it was his own fault that he has to bury his son. He didn't kill a rapist. He didn't kill a murderer. FFS he wasn't forced to stay there. Then again I'm sure you would whip out a gun n kill in kid shoot him dead in the face for playing music. I would like to organise a protest and play music in my car as loud as I can in soldarity of this kid. He never deserved that kind of punishment.

However sad this is, some people just test you and push you to the limit. We have neighbours whose dogs bark continuously whilst they are home.Really works on ones nerves!

      Albertus Lombaard - 2013-12-01 17:40

Get a massive sub hoofer, aim it at the neighbor's window and give it gas every time his dogs are disturbing your peace. Talking does not help, fight fire with fire, you will see he will sort out his dogs in no time

      Erna Westdyk - 2013-12-01 17:47

Vanessa there are more ways to skin a cat. You don't shoot youngsters, or anyone for that matter, for playing loud music. Stop making excuses.

      Walter Corbett - 2013-12-01 18:54

Vanessa, try getting some Ultra-high frequency anti-bark files and place them on a CD. Play it at full vulume every time the dogs bother you.Humans cannot hear this because the frequency is too high - but dogs can, and they hate it! It really shuts them up. AND the best part is the neighbours have absolutely no idea why their dogs have stopped barking-a truly elegant solution. Such fun.

      Marlene Black - 2013-12-02 07:57

Olandini, please elaborate on the anti bark files. Where are they to be found? I am at my wits end.

  • Sthembiso Jali - 2013-12-01 17:36

I hate loud music too, especially at night.

      Bernard Ngwira - 2013-12-01 17:39

I do hate loud music as well, however they are so many channels to use other than violence.

      Erna Westdyk - 2013-12-01 17:45

You just don't shoot people for loud music!

      Mike Purchase - 2013-12-01 18:22

I love my music but there is a time and a place for everything,he should have called the police to sort his problem out.

      Sthembiso Jali - 2013-12-01 18:27

@ Mike, maybe in his case I might have called the police, but in the townships police don't even bother to respond in such complaints. People bang music the whole night and drag race their cars.

  • Mike Mcc - 2013-12-01 17:38

"Gauteng police spokesperson Colonel Noxolo Kweza said the police's information showed that he wanted to shoot himself and not harm anyone else, the newspaper reported." - if the revolver he used turns out to be his licensed firearm then the police should be held accountable as well since they should have forced him to surrender his weapon if they were aware that he intended to harm himself.

  • Tumi Motlatla - 2013-12-01 17:39

This is sad story indeed, and pity some morons just chose to turn this tragedy into a political and race battle. Idiots!

  • Erna Westdyk - 2013-12-01 17:43

.......police's information showed that he wanted to shoot himself and not harm anyone else, the newspaper reported.-----------so that was sufficient reason not to do something about it. Something must have snapped but that is no excuse - he should be charged woth premeditated murder.

  • Motlalepula Matshwe - 2013-12-01 17:48

I don't get this were the police supposed to give him a bodyguard. If his friends were so concerned were they not supposed to get him some sort of counselling to assist him in dealing with his psychological problems.

      Shireen Abbas Davids - 2013-12-01 18:25

The fwnds got the police involved b4 to remove his gun as he was suicidal ,DOF! They did nothing

  • Jim Wallace - 2013-12-01 17:56

Loud music can drive anyone insane, loud music when you are suicidal can drive you to shoot innocent people, the only thing he can plead is temporary Insanity. He can win the case.

  • SunshinyDay - 2013-12-01 18:07

People can be very inconsiderate when it comes to music, it's like they think the whole world wants to listen to their music too. However, that is no excuse to go on a shooting rampage. He was living at a guesthouse- if it was so disturbing he could have easily have moved to a different guesthouse, or call the police as often as needed for noise disturbance. This guy was clearly frustrated with life in general and it seems he wanted to take as many people down with him as possible. Poor kid and poor guy, but I hope he gets what he deserves. You can't just go around killing people.

  • Adepoju Mosebo - 2013-12-01 18:20

I lyk the part where they say he tried to flee and fell into pool!!!! Gun jammed but he could think about the water, Y ddnt he drown himself right there in the pool??? He had an opportunity to go heaven well hydrated!!! Classic moron!!!

  • Lovemaster Armstrong - 2013-12-01 18:41

I was close into doing what this man did to his Neighbour's son, some people just don't want to listen to music, they want to irritate others, but in my situation I only used a sword no one died.

  • Pinky Mgobozi - 2013-12-01 18:43

Are we able to be human before being black/white. A young man is killed, someone who had a long life ahead of them and all we can see is race, what type of people comment in this platform? My prayers for the affected families. This guy could not look after his money, failed to keep his family together and we want to blame police for such?? surely there is a process to follow before taking away someone's firearm who has not been confirmed as unfit by a qualified expert. It shows the amount of anger in some humans, I really hope people do not underestimate anger.

Condolences to the family. This man was obviously severely depressed. On the noise level, people need to be more considerate. One can understand loud music on a weekend night sure until a reasonable time. I have a neighbour who likes to play absolute rave type rubbish on a Sunday night. Not cool at all. Try falling asleep to that rubbish. I am sure the parents desperately wish they had told their son to be considerate. We should all treat each other with respect - you never know who the psychos are.

This was a white man killing a white child...where do we get to the racial element in this sad story? You should all take a long hard look at your contribution to race relations in this country.

It's sad, but lets be honest, if in this country people obeyed rules and take others into consideration (playing hard music in residential areas, barking dogs, etc) people would be more tolerated to one another.... but, sometimes people just get to breakpoint, cause not even complaints are adhered to... to prevent things like this, it is time for people to be more considerate and our law enforcers more effective...

      Scebberish Umfazi - 2013-12-01 20:13

People, people, people, a young boy lost his life! Yes I know that teens can be irritating with loud music. So are some churches on a Sunday. No one goes in there and kill the people. Normal people do not do such things. A mother has to live without her son. I just can not believe these racist comments, stupid and retarded. Some even happy that a white boy was killed. You are sick!!! "Eff Guerilla2013/12/01 06:18:14 PM Let them kill each other, they killed to many of us. We haven't forgotten about our fallen brothers and sisters, it's all gonna come back to haunt you. VIVA EFF!" To you, you eff, wake up. Learn the true history. 99% of the white race never killed a black person. They were killed by a government. I'm 44 and to young to be blamed. You want to blame a race. Even in villages where by-laws are not easy to pass, they don't kill. Killing is a stupid solution. If all the youths who do these are to be killed then there is no future in SA> Stupid solution.

Was a bit harsh for shooting the little twerp. And those that stand for playing music loud, go and read the back of the cd case, it's illegal to publicly broadcast without a license or permit. And playing your music loud IS public broadcasting. For that you must register with samro, like mobile disco's or cover bands and bars/restaurants. Not everybody want to listen to most of the crap being played loudly in any way.

May the boy's family find strength to cope with this tragedy. This may have resulted from a combination of things. Intolerance, financial crisis, divorce stress which often causes Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder, etc. All these things could have been avoided, there always has to be a solution for every problem. Nonetheless, the right to life has been violated.
