Cape Town - A 20-year-old is expected to appear in the Hermanus Magistrate's Court this week for allegedly attacking his mother, Rapport reported on Sunday.

Anthea van der Pluym's only son Nicholas allegedly attacked her in her home in Voelklip, Hermanus in July.

Van der Pluym, 46, was hit over the head 14 times with a hammer, choked with an electric cord and then doused in petrol and set alight.

Van der Pluym's 74-year-old mother Dot Potgieter was also hit over the head with a hammer.

Nicholas, who is being detained in Caledon and recently turned 20, is facing two charges of attempted murder.

The case was expected to be transferred to the regional court on Wednesday.

According to the report, Nicholas returned back to South Africa from England a year ago, after he had emigrated with his father when he was 15, and moved in with Van der Pluym and Potgieter.

While living in England he apparently got involved in drugs.

Van der Pluym said she only heard the good things when he called her from England and knew nothing about the drugs.

A year ago, things started going bad, she told the paper.

When the drugs started to take their toll on Nicholas, Van der Pluym said she brought him home.

Once he had returned, things started to change.

Looking back, Van der Pluym said she should have seen the attack coming but no mother would believe that their own child would hurt them.
