Youth 'want death penalty reinstated'

2013-02-22 18:00

Johannesburg - The majority of young South Africans want the death penalty to be reinstated, consumer insights company Pondering Panda said on Friday.

"It was found that more than three in four young South Africans think the death penalty should be reinstated as the highest form of punishment for criminals," spokesperson Shirley Wakefield said.

Altogether 6 900 young people between 18 and 34 years took part in the survey across the country.

Wakefield said 76% thought capital punishment should be reinstated.

"Eighty percent of all respondents also believed that having the death penalty would deter criminals and reduce crime," she said.

"The survey also found that a similar proportion of respondents felt crime in South Africa was becoming progressively worse."

Sense of desperation

It was conducted between 13 and 19 February and interviews were carried out through cellphones.

Wakefield said the figures showed a sense of desperation that something needed to be done about crime.

"The government needs to make tackling crime in SA central to its agenda if it does not want young people to be further disillusioned about its ability to protect them and keep them safe," she said.

The death penalty was abolished in 1995.

    Nonsense!!

      alex.tarr.52 - 2013-02-22 18:33

It doesn't make a difference, when the death penalty was abolished in the case of S v Makwanyane the court specifically stated that public opinion was vastly in favour of it but that it was irrelevant in light of the contents of the Constitution. Law goes beyond public opinion.

      ChasePotch - 2013-02-22 18:38

Excuse me???? WTF nonsense? Don't you read the papers everyday and see all the beastly like crimes?? The killing of new born babies?? And this is nonsense for you? If I knew you I would SMACK some sense into your idiotic head!!

      mmenzisco - 2013-02-22 18:50

ChasePotch, you not different from those who kill in the name of justice. If the person disagrees with something you believe in, doesn't mean he is an idiot. I would have like to smack some sense in you for presuming your opinion is the smartest. No one else is allowed to think differently.

      Leigh - 2013-02-22 18:55

ChasePotch - Motsarami has a right to his opinion - why the name calling? Not condoning the death penalty doesn't mean that you condone violence in society.

      joe.porchy - 2013-02-22 19:14

This has been circulating for 14 months and has been sent to over 22 million people! Please keep it going! To show your support for President Jacob Zuma and the great job he is doing, please go to the end of the list and add your name. . 1. Mac Maharaj 2

What do you expect us to do, Pixie86 - he gets away with blue murder, nothing happens to him, he chooses who can succeed him to avoid prosecution: we have no choice but to laugh about it and make fun of him.

      henk63 - 2013-02-22 18:54

Pixie, what would you consider a worthy, deserving nickname for our joke of a president? You can call him Your Royal Highness all you want, but some of us refuse to join the ranks of millions of brainless sheep.

  • German Mazokera - 2013-02-22 18:22

If reinstated then there will be imployement creation inform of hangmen who will work seven days a week, finural house will imploy more staff to cater for the hanged ones more staff needed on the grave diggers. Yes i also agree death penalty is needed right now for my tax's sake and general security at large least i will end up shooting at my unknown intruder in a locked kitchen and end up shooting my beloved wife

  • Teboho Mphaloane - 2013-02-22 18:25

Kill the cold-blooded murderers, the nefarious rapists, the armed robbers and oh... can I send my CV for the post of hangman when you decide to do it? I'm really good with knots, (trapdoor) mechanics and the physics modules I took mean that I'll be able to calculate just the right drop distance to get the job done neatly. Also a crime victim if it counts...

  • Ray Molekoa - 2013-02-22 18:33

And get Hilton Botha to cook up your case with lies to get you the death sentence . His type are actually many us fear for the return of the death penalty . Few real criminals will get it while the majority will suffer the same fate . Only the naïve call for the death penalty .

      henk63 - 2013-02-22 19:02

Remember, the death penalty never was, and should never be meted out easily. It is certainly the hardest choice a judge can make. If there is any doubt about guilt it is avoided, but if there is no doubt and the killer can not be rehabilitated, then let him hang by all means. It really makes sense - financially, morally and intellectually.

  • womba.wonder - 2013-02-22 18:35

      Sandra Rennie - 2013-12-29 22:16

mbuso I wholeheartedly agree with you on that issue. Poor excuse it was by the way! Had this happened in Texas, the person you are talking about would be on Death Row already, not on bail.

  • ChasePotch - 2013-02-22 18:40

This country needs a Hitler as a president but instead of killing Jews murderers and rapists should be killed!

      Punctuation goes a long way!

  • Gavin J Dandridge - 2013-02-22 18:45

Yes, crime is out of control in South Africa and especially violent crime but if we are striving to be a civilised society how can we support and expect legalised murder from our government. We would be no better than murderers ourselves.

      Leigh - 2013-02-22 18:49

      Linda Lipschitz - 2013-02-22 20:36

No Definitly not Rapists should be publicly physically castrated and left to die in the hot sun Animals like that dont deserve one mm of human rights They are the scum of the earth Especially those who rape children and the elderly

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2013-02-23 12:15

Linda Lipschitz. Name the animals that rape. They don't, rape is a human thing.

  • Mbuso Siera - 2013-02-22 19:38

Reinstate the death penalty, our country prisons are full to capacity, insead of building more prisons build schools and houses for the disadvantaged and reduce the number of prisoners through the death penalty they are wasting tax money, use that money to feed the less fotunate instead of feeding rapist, murderers and drug dealers who keep on demanding more luxury in those prisons....

  • janti.cloete - 2013-02-22 19:41

That is so stupid!! With the Oscar case the police have again shown incompetence. Imagine next you might be standing in court totally innocent and completely at their mercy....

      Killbot79 - 2013-02-22 20:51

Kind of agree, we need an effective police force that isnt corrupt, but we live in SA and corruption is the norm and is accepted by the majority voters

Botswana have a DP and its a very small country, SA is big, a coutry that takes UK 4times, and UK is safer. Majority of African counytries have DP, Even Ghana they have. What is wrong with ANC GOVERNMENT, The country is bad and scary.

  • André Smit - 2013-02-22 20:44

When a person murders in cold blood or rapes or molests small children, that person has given up his right to being a human being. (You can kill out of rage or passion etc but how do you justify rape?). As a society we are so worried by political correctness and human rights that we sometimes forget that the victims of these crimes were not afforded those same rights. If we had a police force that did their jobs properly, and a justice system that judged fairly, I would have to agree...bring back the death penalty...let human rights be the rights of those who choose to be human.

  • tiaan.truter - 2013-02-22 20:58

Looks like the majority of the youth are smarter than the idiots in our government...but,Zuma is to scared to bring back the death penalty coz more than half of hes little sheep will be hanged or injected.South Africa became a safe heaven for criminals...and let me just add this as well ( of all colour ).

  • LesleyDGreyling - 2013-02-22 21:19

Interesting~! our youth seem to know what we need to curb the spiraling crime and violence in this country~!

  • Phura Jacks - 2013-02-22 21:52

Same youth would make the country ungorvenable when their Families are in the wrong side of the law and those who cannt afford strong legal team would victims of the system whilst those who are fortunate would escape jail sentence sometimes even offer to pay and support the victims

Punishment, regardlless the severity thereof, can never be a deterrent on its own. People commit crimes not because they are not afraid of the punishment, but because they are convinced they wont be brought to justice. There a numerous things we can do to curb crime before we reintroduce the death penalty. At the heart of our problem lies the incompetence of the police and the prosecuting authority. These two institutions are perhaps the most visible examples of the result of the application of BEE. Reintroduction of the death penalty wont solve the problem. You have police officers who cant even wright, prosecutors who dont understand the basics of the law. This is the result of low educational standards on both school and university level as well as the wrong approach to BEE.
