Zapiro, Israel supporter in public spat

2012-12-04 19:17

Cape Town - Cartoonist Jonathan Shapiro stuck to his anti-Zionist views on Tuesday after a public spat with a pro-Israel supporter.

Addressing the Cape Town Press Club, Shapiro criticised South Africa-Israel Public Affairs Committee chairperson David Hersch, who also attended the event.

Hersch challenged the cartoonist, otherwise known as Zapiro, for depicting anti-Zionist views in his caricatures.

"You are an anti-Zionist, aren't you? Why do you do this while you send your children to Herzlia [a Jewish day school]?" he asked.

Zapiro told Hersch to leave his children out of the debate.

"This is classic, classic intimidatory tactics. Do not ever bring up my children again," retorted an angry Shapiro.

Zapiro later said he was indeed against political Zionism.

"I think that whatever notions of religious Zionism existed in the 19th century were already perverted by Theodore Herzl and company in order to ethnic-cleanse a land that had a lot of people, who were living there over a period of hundreds of years."

Zapiro said he was, therefore, not in agreement with the way Israel was formed.

"That's not true," Hersch shouted from his chair.

Zapiro silenced him with the words: "No, it is true and I've got the mike now. You had your chance... give back the occupied land and let Palestine become a country, become a nation; and also, abide by [United Nations] resolutions," Zapiro said.

Theodore Herzl was the founder of modern political Zionism, in effect the state of Israel.

The UN recently upgraded the Palestinians' status from that of observer to non-member observer state with a vote of 138 in favour, nine against and 41 abstentions. The United States and Israel were among the countries which voted against the move.

  • danny.levin.33 - 2012-12-04 19:27

So, Mr Zapiro seems to be the descendant of a "CAPO"

      Punungwe - 2012-12-04 19:50

I more than agree with Zapiro. In this day and age the cornerstone of morality is simple secular humanism not religious zealotry. Religious zealotry is too primitive for the modern age. You don't have to ask, I am an atheist.

      theodor.herzl.3 - 2012-12-04 20:38

@patrick 3 Questions: Was there ever a state called Palestine? Where does the name Palestine come from? Do you like history?

      michael.taylorw - 2012-12-04 20:55

@patrick Wrong on all three buddy. apparently you do not like google either...

      theodor.herzl.3 - 2012-12-04 20:55

@patrick 1. Proof please, and maybe try finding it on UN's site? 2. Again, would like some solid proof. 3. Liar

      boom.afridi.56 - 2012-12-04 20:59

why not just do what the plan for peace calls for and give the palestinians the land that is rightfully theirs. imagine if if it was palestine with the massive army and illegal settlements, what then would you pro israeli's say?

      Punungwe - 2012-12-04 21:06

@Jack Russel I have a better suggestion for you. While we go to Southern Israel you go and live in Gaza!!! Let's see then who will be safer you or us.

      willie.uys - 2012-12-04 21:47

I think we all know too little about the whole situation but I just wonder whether, had the 1966 war ended differently and the Israelis had lost, whether there would be the same emphasis on returning occupied land and allowing Israel to be a country? Just asking.

      tokoloshe.eish - 2012-12-04 22:07

@theodor.herzl.3 Where do Moses and the Jews come from? Any guesses? Yeah right, spot-on, it's Egypt!!!!! Now who would have imagined that hey, of all places hey? You and your warped Zionist logic, simply cannot comprehend this fact.

      eddy.deepfield - 2012-12-04 23:03

I agree one hundred percent with Shapiro. What do the Zionists want with an oil less desert? They were offered Uganda and Madagascar in 1948 but they chose Palestine. And there has and never will be peace in the middle East because of it.

      tobydt - 2012-12-04 23:48

:P The irony is that forming Palestine and Isreal as seperate states, seems more to me like apartheid. You have your Isreali homeland, and the Palestinian homeland. And the people would rather live apart, then try and live united.

      andre.vandeventer.16 - 2012-12-05 07:40

To all the atheists. Whether you believe or not, God (Jhwh) gave the land Israel (renamed after Jacob)to the descendants of Abraham, Izak and Jacob in an everlasting covenant. It was also prophesied a few thousand years ago that the Israelites would again inhabit Israel. God's word is true and forever. Israel is going emerge victorious despite whatever the rest of the world says or thinks. Start reading God's Word and start believing!

      punungwe - 2012-12-05 14:46

@docwally pay attention. I criticised BOTH Israel and the Palestinians for day dreaming that they are gonna have a two state solution, when it is so obvious that is no possible. The Israelis and Palestinians will have to live together in a single state with equal rights for all. The sooner they both start working towards that the sooner we will all be spared idiots making veiled threats against other people's children.

boaz.yarmarkov - 2012-12-06 14:20 so many lies from anti Israel propaganda that even Jews are now confused about themselves...Mr Zapiro, a prime example of a man wants to sell cartoons, nothing more, nothing less.

"It is the duty of Israeli leaders to explain to public opinion, clearly and courageously, a certain number of facts that are forgotten with time. The first of these is that there is no Zionism, colonialization, or Jewish State without the eviction of the Arabs and the expropriation of their lands." -- Ariel Sharon, Israeli Foreign Minister, addressing a meeting of militants from the extreme right-wing Tsomet Party, Agence France Presse, November 15, 1998. "Everybody has to move, run and grab as many (Palestinian) hilltops as they can to enlarge the (Jewish) settlements because everything we take now will stay ours...Everything we don't grab will go to them." -- Ariel Sharon, Israeli Foreign Minister, addressing a meeting of the Tsomet Party, Agence France Presse, Nov. 15, 1998.

      Dave - 2012-12-04 19:59

correct, given his platform he needs to be unbiased - make jokes and parodies on both sides, fair enough but dont use your platform to show your personal 1-sided viewpoints. The very basis of good journalism, and journalism is what his platform is whether he likes it or not.

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-12-04 20:03

The relevant, wise & true words of Prophet Moses as per Deuteronomy 31: 24-30: "24 And it came to pass, when Moses had made an end of writing the words of this law in a book, until they were finished, 25 That Moses commanded the Levites, which bare the ark of the covenant of the Lord, saying, 26 Take this book of the law, and put it in the side of the ark of the covenant of the Lord your God, that it may be there for a witness against thee. 27 For I know thy rebellion, and thy stiff neck: behold, while I am yet alive with you this day, ye have been rebellious against the Lord; and how much more after my death? 28 Gather unto me all the elders of your tribes, and your officers, that I may speak these words in their ears, and call heaven and earth to record against them. 29 For I know that after my death ye will utterly corrupt yourselves, and turn aside from the way which I have commanded you; and evil will befall you in the latter days; because ye will do evil in the sight of the Lord, to provoke him to anger through the work of your hands. 30 And Moses spake in the ears of all the congregation of Israel the words of this song, until they were ended".

      theodor.herzl.3 - 2012-12-04 20:18

Jeremiah 31:35-37 Thus saith the LORD, which giveth the sun for a light by day, and the ordinances of the moon and of the stars for a light by night, which divideth the sea when the waves thereof roar; The LORD of hosts is his name: If those ordinances depart from before me, saith the LORD, then the seed of Israel also shall cease from being a nation before me for ever. Thus saith the LORD; If heaven above can be measured, and the foundations of the earth searched out beneath, I will also cast off all the seed of Israel for all that they have done, saith the LORD.

You guys are going to have to get used to the idea of Jews living in their rightful homeland. They are no longer the world's whipping boys. They are not going anywhere else and are staying in that tiny piece of land called Israel. There never has been a land called Palestine, and the issue is not about getting a new homeland for the so called Palestinians, it is merely about denying the Jews a right to their own homeland.

Sad what the nazi did to the Jews they doing to others..,, karma happens to be real and called by names of many all boiling down to the same that nothing goes unseen by the almighty. Zero sending his kids to that school has nothing to do with his views as many orthodox Jews denies the existence of that occupied lands u call a state. Free the land of palestine to its rightful people who are of different faiths and walks. Not those who think they are the salt of the earth! Absolutely not. The Jews are infidels not because I say so, and not because they are killing Muslims, but because Allah said: The Jews say that Uzair is the son of Allah, and the Christians say that Christ is the son of Allah. These are the words from their mouths. They imitate the sayings of the disbelievers before. May Allah fight them. How deluded they are. It is Allah who said that they are infidels. @boom - Look at how many Jewish relics have been built prior to everything else. Only 21 centuries ago was Isreal beaten down by the Assyrians (+- 722BC.) Ever since then have the Jews been persecuted in their own land. Now they take it back, and they're considered to be barbarians. If you have been watching real "un-edited" news, then maybe your opinion wouldn't be so biased. Understand the situation?

      Sameera - 2012-12-05 23:08

Perhaps if the jews took Sabath seriously back then all those hundreds of years ago, when they were strictly ordered not to do 'business'on the holy day, or stopped asking so many questions and just slaughtered a simple calf, god would not have cast them out of jerusalem in the first place' its Jewish nature to have pride and arrogance and a greed for wealth and power' how disillusioned are they now thinking the 'kaballa' will come and save them when infact it will just be history repeating itself' their 'masiach' that they waiting for has come and gone' sorry that he came from the Arabs and not the Israelites' if the original torah was preserved they surely would know the truth' but why promote truth when its not in their best interest' the Anti-Christ is the one who will assist the Zionists is 'ressurecting' the 3rd temple, careful who u follow .. - 2012-12-06 16:00

Sadly the crux of this conflict is Jealousy. Islam will never know peace as long as they do not lose their jealousy of the Christians and Jews and their unchallenged link to the holy land.

Allah is great forsure. The Qur'an relates the words by which Moses ordered the Israelites to conquer the Land:"And [remember] when Moses said to his people: 'O my people, call in remembrance the favour of God unto you, when he produced prophets among you, made you kings, and gave to you what He had not given to any other among the peoples. O my people, enter the Holy Land which God has assigned unto you, and turn not back ignominiously, for then will ye be overthrown, to your own ruin.'" [Qur'an 5:20-21] Moreover - and those who try to use Islam as a weapon against Israel always conveniently ignore this point - the Holy Qur'an explicitly refers to the return of the Jews to the Land of Israel before the Last Judgment - where it says: "And thereafter We [Allah] said to the Children of Israel: 'Dwell securely in the Promised Land. And when the last warning will come to pass, we will gather you together in a mingled crowd.'" [Qur'an 17:104]

I do not understand this always. I am a white South African that came from a poor family and now in a proffesional career. I have never been part of a selective group like the Broederbond. My parents never treated any black man bad and apartheid only meant to me that I never mixed with people that I felt are a threat. I am 55 years old and all the people I grew up with basically felt the same. Whatever is wrong in Isreal and Palestine is probably the same as what is wrong in our own country.

      mawandewonderman.mkuba - 2012-12-04 21:08

You have all my respect. Ppl like you can help this sick world.

More or less like Ventersdorp and Orania.

  • joe.irwin.50 - 2012-12-04 20:58

Neither will accept the other. We can debate until the cow come home and 50 years from now the situation will probably be much the same. If it is not then it will be because one or the other will no longer exist. - 2012-12-06 15:53

Israel knew this decades ago. Islam does not have the word “peace process” in Arabic... only "Hudna" exists in Arabic which means cease fire. thus Israel has nuclear arms - if something happens to Israel they take the entire Arab world with them... imagine no more Hajj cause the land is radio active forever. Israel has an insurance policy my friend, all clever people do :) This war is Quality vrs Quantity… very interesting.

  • davidrobertlewis - 2012-12-04 21:00

Somebody try explaining why the Jordanian flag and the Palestinan flag are literally one and the same? Or explain why there is no Palestinian Freedom Charter? Or explain why Progressive Jews including myself are being attacked by apartheid denialists who blame apartheid on the Jews while denying it still exists in South Africa? Folks, the Jews weren't responsible for apartheid, the Afrikaner Broederbond was the cause.

      george.pito - 2012-12-04 22:04

My friend I think you just attacked yourself. You explain as you know something nobody else knows. The AFrikaner Broederbond concentration camps so what thats how the world evolves. IlluminateFree masonary S1T now we have Apple and Samsung. People from Isreal give me bad deals so does the French etc. Stop blaming soon we gonna have to face an invasion from Mars. I have land and they tax the the hell out of me soon I cannot afford it anymore. What who ever wants the land want to do with it. Everybody wants to be safe have food some needs more food and dies sooner. Whatever you believe in others also believe in something somehow it goes back to adam and eve and the lots of things went wrong.

      george.frangs - 2012-12-05 08:07

WTF has Apartheid have to do with this?? This is about Zionists and a whole lot of "isms" and such, and you're talking apartheid... Seriously, stop looking for scape-goats.

Israel also use the same oppressive tactics as your god. The whole crisis in Palestine / Israel staryed because both sides believe their sky-daddy promised them the land. In the meantime, if you look at the history of both religions, they believe in the same sadistic abrahamic, non-existant god.

Possibly the most holy place in the world and yet home to perpetual hate and anger. We turn to our Holy Books searching for validation of our actions and assumed superiority over God's other children. Yet with all that claimed superiority we all behave like devils. We acknowledge that we all pray to the same God yet insist the holy texts of others are riddled with lies, misinformation and mistruths. How naive is any one people to believe that they exclusively hold title to Palestine? How God fearing is anybody if they are willing to drive home that belief with bullets, bombs and death. Whether Jew or Arab, do the tears of your neighbour not beg the question, do I live as my God commands? We seem to choose sides. I say we choose the Truth.

The Jewish God teaches love and peace and the Zionists God teaches land grabbing and oppression. People don't hate Jews, Jews are wonderful people, Zionists are scum, criminals, gangsters that steal land. - 2012-12-06 16:23

    Shapiro has lost my respect.

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-12-04 21:51

I'm sure he cares. Not. What he does care about, however, is exposing what's wrong with the world we live in. And, like you and me, he's entitled to his opinion and to express it, as brilliantly as he does, might I add. What has your contribution to the woe's of the world been? While I'm at it, consider this: Up until now (by inference), he's had your respect, because you agreed with him. Many times, I imagine. Yet now, because he has an opinion on something which differs from yours, he no longer has your respect? Fickle much? Besides, ol' Zap knows more about what's going on in the world than you're ever likely to. Or myself, for that matter.

      mbambo.shi - 2012-12-04 22:00

Is it because he unearthed the wrongs committed by your God [Israel], to the innocent Palestinians. You can shuve your respect in the hole between your bums

  • mnmwale - 2012-12-04 22:10

Trying to appear an expert on an issue one has little understanding of is foolishness of the foolest kind. And Shapiro is displaying such foolishness. It indeed boggles the mind how public figures in South Africa can embrace such ignorance to such an extent that they can sacrifice everything - including their sanity - in a public display of their affectations of their understanding of the issue. Despite all the irrational attitute of people like Shapiro, the fact remains that Zionism is the most logical response to anti-semitism and that the refusal to hand over captured land seized from the 6-day 1967 war is the most logical thing to do to show the Arabs that they are no rewards for war if you are the aggressor and loser.

      LanfearM - 2012-12-06 10:19

Yes, it is interesting to note that everyone screams that Israel should return the land taken in legitimate wars, in which they were attacked first by coalitions of Arab states. Perhaps then, Germany for example must also insist that the land they lost in WWII be returned to them! It is the same principle!

  • jojo.balela.1 - 2012-12-04 22:18

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. The main worry is that the Palestinians and Israelis settle their disputes in a mature and peaceful way, instead of murdering each others civilians

      LanfearM - 2012-12-06 10:21

One of the few reasoned responses. For some reason, both sides of this fence seem to froth at the mouth constantly. It is a pity, since both sides in this sad conflict are to blame and only by admitting that, will they be able to forge peace. - 2012-12-06 15:36

How short people's memories are... Whenever people talk about the Israeli question, it inevitably ends in a chicken and egg style argument about who occupied where illegally first. The bottom line is, if Hamas and the other political groups in the disputed regions began acting more like civilised political parties rather than terrorists with the sole aim of killing Israeli civilians (remember, if Israel had the same aim this whole issue wold have been put to bed years ago due to their military might ie the killing of all the Palestinians) then Israel would not have a leg to stand on and the US and the west would have no choice but to put pressure to bear on Israel to make concessions to the now truly peaceful and democratic Palestinians. Israel has every right to use what ever it needs to fight Palestians terrorism in self defence. I have never and can never support any terrorist organisation who supports the killing of innocent civilians no matter how just they believe their cause. When the Palestnians side renounce terror there will be peace... and that is the sad fact.

  • russell.gaddin - 2012-12-04 22:53

Zapiro is a wonderful cartoonist but he is also a hypocrite. Hersch was right to challenge him for continually attacking Israel whilst sending his children to a school that has the promotion of Zionism as part of its Constitution. By taking a "heroic" role by stating "leave my children out of it", he ducked the issue. Its not about his children its about Zapiro. He also misquotes and exaggerates the presence and ownership of the land of Israel by the Palestinians. They never had or tried to have a State. Before Arafat they never had a leader, currency or anything that would suggest Statehood. They never built anything and were in fact Nomads and unafilliated Tribes that fought amongst themselves. The Jews on the other hand have an unbroken presence in Jerusalem and the land over thousands of years. Zapiro's representations are based on a hatred of Israel for personal reasons and he creates a fictional background to support the "Pictures" he draws.

      PrettyUsefulArt - 2012-12-04 23:13

Was Hersch also right to expose Zapiro's children to risk? Zapiro is often controversial and no doubt makes enemies along the way. To mention the school the children go to was below the belt and I don't blame Zapiro in the least for becoming angry about it. And since you seem to know Zapiro so well, do tell what his supposed personal reasons are for hating Israel? And just because he doesn't agree with what's happening politically, does that automatically mean he is not entitled to bring his children up in his faith?

      Sameera - 2012-12-05 22:36

Dear Russel By Zapiro sending his kids to a Jewish school in light of his comments does not make him hypocritical at all, since Zionism is completely different to Judaism' Zionism is founded on the premise of the Kabbala, which is a form of Pagan Jewish scocery and will be used as a platform for the New World Order. To wrap it up, Zionism can be understood as a trojan within the Jewish faith. Trust this clarifies ..

  • mohammedallyking - 2012-12-04 23:09

  • Nkosinathi.Sibbs - 2012-12-05 00:48

Well done ZAPIRO. Those who suffered from Holocust must not expose others to Holocust and its surprises how some have quickly fogotten that. If as Africans were to chase all out who are not Africans how would thi s look like? Israel is an apartheis state and is practising discrimination by eclusively suppresing Palastineans. Britain after world war 2 sold Palastineans and ever s ince the P alastineans have suffered horrible inhumany, humillians, violent segregation, land invasion beyond description.

  • dave.kofang - 2012-12-05 01:14

Im wondering how on earth has UN allowed Israel to defy resolutions for so long but they are quick to unleash their sanctions and their security council on any country crossing their paths. Now is the time 4 UN to punish Israel.

      braddo.ct - 2012-12-05 08:41

Well, consider that this Hersch guy's outburst is a symptom that the Zionists are in full defensive mode after the recent atrocities committed by the Zionist entity in Gaza and elsewhere. The UN decisions this past week shows a resolve that never before existed, because people are today much more aquainted with the Zionist's true face

      braddo.ct - 2012-12-05 08:46

There are many True Torah Jews who teach and whose children attend Herzlia. Should they all leave because it bears the name of a rich athiest?

  • peanutcluster - 2012-12-05 07:21

David Hersch is a sick man to bring Zapiro's children into the foray. The children should be left out of this - I sent my children to an Anglican school, my wife attended a Catholic school and I attended a secular school! I would put my daughter into Herzlia too - if I admire their academic program!

  • gerhard.viljoen1 - 2012-12-05 07:42

fist of all I love u zapiro but ur wrong. Israel was founded by Rothschild. Secondly the occupied land u talk about was the borders where a cease fire was agreed uppon after the PALESTINIANS tried to take Israels land. Sorry, but in my books if you loose land in a war u started then the land is not yours anymore.

      braddo.ct - 2012-12-05 08:53

Gerhard, the Zionist entity that is known as Israel was formed as a scheme between Rothschild and Theodor Herzl. The Balfour Declaration was the handing over to Zionist of the so-called British Mandate of Palestine. Regardless of the fact that the land was inhabited already. Since then Israel, using the same logic you ascribe to regarding land acquired through war, has provoked conflict after conflict while pretending as always to be the innocent party. This allowed it to "annex" land like the Golan heights and other territories.

      johan.dutoit.566148 - 2012-12-05 10:21

How is building houses on other people's land "for security reasons"? Your argument is BS. This is an illegal land grab plain and simple. Thieves. Murderous thieves. That is what they are.
