Cape Town - Zimbabwean higher education minister Jonathan Moyo on Sunday expressed his grief following the death of his daughter in Cape Town.

"God’s people my angel daughter Zanele is no more," the professor tweeted following the discovery of his 20-year-old daughter’s body in her flat on Saturday morning.

"The cause of death has not been confirmed," said UCT spokesperson Gerda Kruger in a statement earlier on Sunday.

Zanele Moyo was a student at the University of Cape Town, majoring in gender, political and international relations studies.

A police investigation into her death would be carried out.

Moyo was Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe's spin doctor for many years but was recently demoted to education minister.

Meanwhile, Zanele’s sister, Lungile, told the Zimbabwean Sunday Mail that a friend became worried when Zanele did not answer her phone on Saturday morning.

"We still don’t have the full details of what happened, but her friend who called us said she managed to gain entry into the property with the help of a locksmith..." she told the newspaper.

"She had already passed away when they found her."

Lungile Moyo said that her sister had struggled with depression, "but I don’t know what troubles she was going through right now, if any".

The newspaper reported that Zanele was one of Moyo’s five daughters.
