Johannesburg - A Zimbabwean politician shot and wounded his wife before committing suicide in Johannesburg on Tuesday, police said.

Justine Chiota, a founding member of the Zimbabwe People's Party, turned the firearm on himself at his house in Morningside, Sandton, said Captain Kim Cloete.

Lieutenant Colonel Lungelo Dlamini said the shooting happened at 11:00, when a police officer from Sandton accompanied Chiota's wife to his house to deliver a protection order.

The order was related to domestic violence, he said.

Chiota fired a number of shots, one of which hit his estranged wife in the upper body.

Another bullet tore the policeman's shirt, but did not wound him.

Dlamini said the woman was in a serious condition in hospital.

When police approached the house, Chiota was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

How can he be a Zim politician and he lives in SA?

This is an old trick of politicians, Silvana. Run away from any danger in their own country. Get sympathy abroad. Live a King's and Queen's life at the expense of the host country. When things calm down, they come back and take over. Exactly the same thing happened here. Some came back sounding like proper Pommies. Queen's English and all that. Some were Russian. Some wanted to be more like Scandinavian. They were so used to getting the best of everything, that they just started taking everything for themselves. It became a culture. Take it, you're entitled to it! That's why I say the ANC are not South Africans. They treat our country and our people with disdain and will only do things to enrich and benefit themselves. They put themselves above us. They think we are stupid. Perhaps we are. We allow them to.

isn't there something fundamentally wrong with the law when a victim has to go with the police to deliver a protection order. Surely the whole point of the order is to protect the victim but now they are forced to see the person who they want protection from, just to get the order delivered.

Unfortunately all people could be taken for a ride by this man. Did they ever see his qualifications a lawyer, if so from which univeristy. Unfortunately or this innocent woman for failing to realise the kind of man Justine was. I knew him from his early teens until he left for South Africa. To the woma's parents i am so sorry as well as to the innocent kids born out of this strange man whose behavior was wayward.
