Zulu king needs more money

2012-10-29 09:37

Durban - Zulu King Goodwill Zwelithini needs more money to keep his six wives and about 20 children in the manner to which they are accustomed, a trust set up for the monarchy says.

The king’s Royal Household Trust was apparently run on a “shoestring” budget and was not sufficient, the trust told provincial authorities, said the Sunday Tribune.

Over the previous financial year, the trust was allocated R12m from the R55m budget of the Royal Household Department but apparently overspent it by R5.1m.

Judge Jerome Ngwenya said an extra R6m was needed for “several other duties”, which apparently included filling the vacancies of CEO, CFO and public relations manager.

Opposition parties did not object to further funding but had concerns about the trust’s operation.

The trust was set up to manage the royal family’s household.

It was reported a month ago that officials from the Royal Household Department had helped themselves to R600 000 worth of groceries.

Yup, he's a king? From now on call me a queen. If he wants more money, let the filth and his concubines go and work for it.

      Rabbler.Rouser - 2012-10-29 10:00

The Zulu king and his entourage are just parasites.

      denise.ryan.5203 - 2012-10-29 17:36

Well done on trying to squeeze the KZN treasury for another R18-million. It’s outrageous that the Royal Household is expected to get by on a mere R62-million a year. I spend that kind of money in a month. And that’s just on beer... I hear Queen Zola Mafu, your sixth and youngest, wants a palace of her own. At the moment she’s bunking with Queen Mantfombi. Why should she have to share? It doesn’t seem right. If I were her, I’d also want my own palace. Especially if I lived at the KwaKhangelamankengane Palace and had to spell it every time I phoned Mr Delivery...

      lsfreak - 2012-10-30 14:41

Hey I agree... But wait aren't we building they a R250mil Palace under the guis of a "National Key Point" since the fortress that ZippeR is building is technically on the Kings land that improvement will/does belong to him :/ Man it's great that the state works for you :D

If there is one thing we have been really good at in South Africa is the manufacturing of stup!d. Our production has only got better and better!!

  • bretton.eveleigh - 2012-10-29 09:42

Interesting, Zuma is running for re-election and suddenly the King of the Zulu's pops up to ask for more state funding of their lavish lifestyles. Ironic? Zuma can't say no!

Ineptocracy (in-ep-toc’-ra-cy) - a system of government where the least capable to lead are elected by the least capable of producing, and where the members of society least likely to sustain themselves or succeed, are rewarded with goods and services paid for by the confiscated wealth of a diminishing number of producers.

  • kala.bafazi - 2012-10-29 09:43

It really is time for Monarchies to be abolished. They are old fashioned, provide no meaningful contribution to the country and cost the tax payer a whole lot of money so the "king" can once a year look at barely legal girls parading topless in front of him. Go get a real job Zwelithini!!!

      demi.cooke.7 - 2012-10-29 09:49

Imagine how the rest of the world laugh at us

      kala.bafazi - 2012-10-29 09:55

Demi - It's not just this country. Even the British Royals live off their people's money whilst the only contribution they really make is attending some occassional charity functions. The queen is such a sour bitch she is virtually incapable of smiling. The Swazi royals have all but bankrupted Swaziland and all Maswati can do is try to get as many wives as Zwelintini. Get rid of the whole lot I say.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-10-29 10:06

Kala - i think if you check, the British royals get limited funds from the tax-payers - in fact they get a stipend which is in line with the duties they fullfill. Basically a salary. I think if goodwill wants to be a king, his subjects should support him. I am not a zulu - i would love to be as it would do wonders for my BEE ratings - so I don't believe my tax money should go to support him.

      jo.vankatwijk - 2012-10-29 10:20

@ demi.cooke.7 The rest of the world has no cooking clue about SA, let alone that we have this king and president with their numerous wives and kids.

      ahenriquesfernandes - 2012-10-29 11:08

Watch this. The British monarchary have a standing argrement regarding the land they own (The queen is the largest land owner in England) and Taxes. The people in Britain actually pay less tax due to this. Here in SA we don't get anything from the Zulu Royal family, as far as I know. They only generate tourism - which can only be subjectively measured really. I have never hear of anyone saying "hey I want to visit South Africa. They have a royal family! How cool is that!".

      marius.j.rensburg.3 - 2012-10-30 10:15

      tasneem.sattar.5 - 2012-10-30 17:03

In addition, BRITS pay for their BRITISH royals, why is it all NON zulu tax payers have to pay for this zulu lay-about!?

      tasneem.sattar.5 - 2012-10-30 17:06

since he is the zulu monarch, why not add a tax surcharge for zulu tax payers, that goes into a zwelithini trust!?

      david.g.fosse - 2012-12-18 20:44

Dear Kalabafazi or whatever your savage cultural name is.The royal family in the UK actually pays tax to hmrs and also bring in billions of pounds in foreign tourism spending.Dont judge what you dont know about, now go and crawl back into your grass hut.

  • SharonE - 2012-10-29 09:44

It's the same as winning over the religious masses. It's all about allegiance. Buy over one man and you gain the political support of everyone under him. Much cheaper than buying all those individual votes. In other words, he'll get his money, and for the same reason that parties court the favour of churches: they command the obedience of whole flocks of sheep.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-10-29 10:10

32% of the land in KZN belongs to the zulu trust. They should rent it out to BEE farmers and live on the income from that. That is how the British royals fund themselves... and yes, I believe the Nkandla homestead is on the land owned by the zulu trust, and Zuma pays in the order of R1000 per month rent...

      mshiniboys - 2012-10-29 11:59

ok, mshini - so tell me how it works. He runs the zulu trust, which owns 32% of the arable land in KZN, probably the most productive land in SA in terms of agriculture - and nobody pays rent? sounds nice. Maybe I should also become a zulu and apply for land.

      frans.visserdsb - 2012-10-29 21:47

lol - i have to develop my critical thinking and curb my racist tendencies? riiiiggghhhtt.... this country is supposedly democratic...the children should all get jobs and pay for their won weddings, holidays, shopping splurges, streetwise meals and personal items...since when did we vote to support monarch families? Please tell me because I cannot remember. I would like to see the tax money, of which is paid by about 10% of the total population, go towards service delivery and fighting corruption. You pay tax - you get a say. If you don't pay tax - keep your mouth shut and work until you can afford to pay tax. None of this entitlement rubbish.

      stevie0064 - 2012-10-29 11:46

This is not about monarchy, your tax money, or tradition. It's about politics. The politics of numbers to be precise, because SA has become all too accustomed to worshipping the ideals of democracy without making provision for its practical weaknesses. Zweletini commands the obedience of a whole group of people much like church leaders and their congregations. Buy out one man and you gain the support of everyone under him. Form a democratic standpoint, it's an easy win.

Zwelithini is taking advantage of Zuma being the president of the country and must be told to stop the abuse of the tax payer's money. What is the royal family doing with 12 Millions? Other kings don’t even get a million. King please go get yourself a job. In fact this kingdom ship nonsense is outdated and a liability to the country .These chiefs and Kings don’t even care about the people, all they do is abuse the people and live the life of riches while the people in those rural areas they live in suffer and still they make them pay stupid monies to the royal family. Money they don’t even have. We now have the government so what do we need the Kings and Chiefs for? We have the law enforcement and the courts in the country. There is no more use for the Kings and chiefs. The king must start eating his children for all I care.

      stevie0064 - 2012-10-29 11:50

Agreed that royalty is largely obsolete unless they perform some or other duty to the government as in the UK. On the other hand, such people command the obedience of the more "traditional" among us, so like it or not, they have value to a political party that requires only numbers to retain power (such as the ANC).
