Zulu king's travel costs R800k a month

2012-11-23 11:01

Durban - King Goodwill Zwelithini and his entourage spend more than R800 000 a month on travelling, the Mercury reported on Friday.

The king's travel costs were discussed at a meeting of the KwaZulu-Natal finance portfolio committee on Thursday.

Committee member and Inkatha Freedom Party MPL Roman Liptak said the figure was a monthly average.

According to documents tabled at the meeting, chief financial officer in the Royal House department, Mduduzi Mthembu, suggested it was difficult to control the king's travel and associated costs.

Mthembu said at least R820 000 had been used a month for the hire of private jets and helicopters when the king was criss-crossing the province to perform his duties.

It had not been established how many times the king's bill had hit the R800 000 mark during the current financial year.

The royal household was allocated a budget of R59.5m in the current financial year.

Three months ago there was an outcry when officials of the royal house asked for a further R12m for constructing a house in the king's eNkonyeni palace, and a further R5m to convert a farmhouse into a house for the monarch's youngest wife, Zola Mafu.

How can you have a King getting tax money when we live in a democracy where we have a president???

      klipkop.degroote - 2012-11-23 11:43

Come on Gift, he can use his own money like you and me. Why does need to overseas anyway? Shopping? Shaka never went to England did he?

      michael.horton.566790 - 2012-11-23 12:03

@ gift.ndlovu.564 - Okay... Then I am going to claim that I am King of the white people in the Western Cape... I want your tax money please so that I can go overseas to shop!

      rontheogre - 2012-11-23 12:20

Gift - another shining example of SA education. Comes up with one idea(which does not make sense), and then runs(copy, parrot, paste) with it. Cannot use imagination to come up with an original post.

      darryl.maze1 - 2012-11-23 13:32

@gift. only place he is important to is KFC.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-11-23 13:38

@gift, gonna write the same comment over and over? He is not an important figure, he is useless. Useless Goodsh*t

      maggie.shai.9 - 2012-11-23 14:31

gift.ndlovu No for overseas he need to swim!

Is he a drunken sot or is he a drunken sot?

      michael.kleber.376 - 2012-11-24 10:46

it equates to almost R30 000 a day on travel ? is he wasting our tax money or what ? that is 365 rdp houses a year for his travel , 365 families could have a roof over their heads . The upgrade on Nkandla could build 8400 rdp houses

      IcemanGP - 2012-11-25 07:30

Seems "gift.ndlovu.564" did a duck and run, after seeing how stupid is comment was.

      IcemanGP - 2012-11-25 07:35

Why is it the majority of TAX paying citizens PAY for a "King" that does NOT even belong to them. Stupid white people.

      carl.debeer.52 - 2012-11-28 12:59

People this is one King in one province...I want figures of government spending that goes to all the Kings and tribal leaders in this country? Anybody know where I can find these figures? South Africa would be able to pay off its foreign debt in 5yrs.

  • jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-11-23 11:15

What can I say? If Queen Elizabeth would be this extravagant, she would quickly be put in her place. What a circus we live in, unbelievable.

      henk63 - 2012-11-24 08:02

The queen is known for her frugal lifestyle, even if she's known to one of the richest people on earth. She's got class, something these buffoons will never comprehend. Imagine letting loose one of these African "kings" with such an amount of money. It will be gone in a week.

  • parys.fotograaf - 2012-11-23 11:18

This man adds no value to most who pay taxes and thus this is nothing more than theft. It is time that only his own people pay for his extravagant lifestyle.

  • efgous - 2012-11-23 11:19

I declare myself the King of the afrikaans people and would like my R60 mil as well.... I will "rent" a private car from 500 people (1 per person) each month to "re-distribute" wealth among my peers @ R5,000.00/car. That will be 6,000 people/year. Then I will also upgrade farm houses into security complexes to protect my people as any good king should. This will account for the other R 30 mil budgeted for me.

      typersa.baddy - 2012-11-23 11:23

Noooo no no, I am the KING!! :) LOL

      beverly.young3 - 2012-11-23 11:30

Well, I guess I am gonna persue him relentlessly.......once we are 'together' I can travel until my hearts content, and tick off my bucket list of places I would like to visit. sjoe that is a lota money wasted ne? Doing his 'kingly things' ??eh ?? like what? Mind you he did utter in a report, that he had no interest in the finances of his 'estate' as he had 'people' who took care of it for him. Yeboo....they are stealing their share as well ne? R600k ? ha ha ha Its not easy to be a king mense....

      rontheogre - 2012-11-23 12:44

Egfous, your priorities are wrong. First travel the country shopping for wives, order 3 blingy cars(you know, those with the wheelcaps that keep on spinning when you have stopped, ultra cool), 3 helicopters and 3 private jets(you must have back ups in place)

      henk63 - 2012-11-24 08:04

      henk63 - 2012-11-24 08:06

It must be wonderful to be able to claim whatever you want as "culture" while still being able to grab whatever you can from civilization. These vile creatures make me sick.

  • justin.schonegevel - 2012-11-23 11:39
