Zuma 'applying his mind' on Mogoeng

2011-09-07 11:22

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma is "applying his mind" on the possible appointment of Judge Mogoeng Mogoeng as South Africa's next chief justice, his spokesperson Mac Maharaj said on Wednesday.

Maharaj said there was no time frame for a public announcement on his decision, as some NGOs kept up their campaign to not have Mogoeng appointed.

The Nobel Women's Initiative on Wednesday joined organisations urging Zuma to withdraw his nomination, the Sonke Gender Justice Network said.

Members of the Nobel Women's Initiative who are also Nobel laureates, feel that Mogoeng's many rulings undermined women's rights, and were at odds with values enshrined in the Constitution, Sonke spokesperson Mbuyiselo Botha said.

Laureates Jody Williams, Shirin Ebadi and Mairead Maguire joined Sonke, Section 27, the Treatment Action Campaign and the Lesbian and Gay Equality Project in the call.

The latter organisations said on Wednesday they also plan to submit a further letter to Zuma, reiterating their concerns.

They objected to past judgments handed down by Mogoeng which they feel show problems with his approach to gender violence, specifically violence against women and children.

They believe the Judicial Service Commission made a mistake by recommending Mogoeng for the job, after his public interview in Cape Town last weekend.

      Mark Singh - 2011-09-07 11:40

remember, there is no time frame so he could be applying his mind for quite a while. This may be due to the fact that this is a new experience for Zuma

Hahahahahahahahaha! They should have used allegedly too. Eish, where is 1st gear?

(YNPL) Youth in need of a proper leader - 2011-09-07 11:59

Just hope that this is not a stunt to try and altar some law into his favuor, then withdraw Mogoeng after he is satisfied.

      ElJorge - 2011-09-07 12:00

Applying your mind is something that your supposed to do BEFORE you make a decision in the first place......

      DW - 2011-09-07 12:53

He is also still applying his mind to the police lease scandal of which he was already informed in February this year. At this rate we will not have a chief justice until after the next elections. As for women's rights, Zuma is not exactly a champion of those, is he?

Komasa, the difference between wages and salaries is that wages are paid by the hour/day/week and are usually paid weekly whereas salaries are paid monthly. There is also the general rule that salaried staff do not get overtime pay. Do you really want to destroy that time capsule?

  • cj - 2011-09-07 12:03

Once again Media 24 bloggers are demonstrating their ignorance, and racial prejudice. " Applying your mind" is a legal term in this context, i.e. in the field of Administrative Law. Any state organ or official that takes an administrative action has to 'apply its mind', failing which the decision/action is liable to be reviewed and set aside. Mac Maharaj is clearly better informed than you idiots.

      falcon2020 - 2011-09-07 12:05

Mac Maharaj is also a convicted fraudster and spent a family holiday at Disney World from tax payers money - this is a bit Micky Mouse anyway don't be fooled

      onetickie - 2011-09-07 12:15

@cj: yes any state organ has to apply one of it's organs, the "MIND" usually. However one has to have a MIND to do that - which clearly the zoo does not, as not with you too. The zoo should have applied whatever grey matter is in that huge skull BEFORE making his choice you chop!

      Slartibartfast - 2011-09-07 12:18

.... and by calling people "idiots" you are not being prejudiced why? Ever heard of "lighthearted" comments? Oh dear .... I forget .... EVERYTHING is serious where non-ANC comments are involved ... NOTHING is serious when ANC corruption is in the spot-light. Imagine that!!
