Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma arrived in Beijing, China, on Wednesday where he will be attending the country's 70th anniversary of the end of the occupation of China and World War II, the presidency said.

Zuma was attending the event at the invitation of his counterpart, President Xi Jinping.

The president would also hold bilateral discussions with Xi on the sidelines of the celebrations, presidency spokesperson Bongani Majola said.

"South Africa's relations with China are at the level of a comprehensive strategic partnership (CSP), with the bilateral relationship being among the most vibrant and strategic," said Majola.

Zuma and his delegation would assess progress on key areas identified under the five-to-10 year strategic programme of co-operation.

They would also discuss preparations for the Forum for China-Africa Co-operation to be hosted by South Africa in December. An update on developments around the African Regional Centre and the Brics New Development Bank would be provided too, Majola said.

Zuma is being accompanied on the trip by International Relations Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and Deputy Energy Minister Thembisile Majola-Embalo.
