Zuma awarded honarary professorship

2012-07-21 08:35

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma was awarded the title of Honorary Professor of International Relations by the Peking University in Beijing, China, on Friday, the presidency said.

Zuma was in the country attending the fifth Forum of China-Africa Co-operation (FOCAC) meeting, the presidency said in a statement.

In his acceptance speech, Zuma said the award was a sign of China's confidence in South Africa.

"Let me also express my personal thanks to this institution and the broader leadership of the People's Republic of China for deeming me worthy of this honour," he said.

"I take this as a symbol of the confidence the Chinese have in South Africa as an emerging country of the South, as well as a partner in the pursuit of a just international order."

He said the award confirmed that China was a country "inspired by the zest for knowledge through education".

"We are inspired by the value attached to education in the analects of the ancient Chinese philosopher Confucius, who stressed the importance of education and study as being fundamental to human progress," Zuma said.

"We believe that today marks the beginning of a new chapter in the educational relations between our two countries."

He said that education was important in South Africa, and it received the biggest share of the country's budget.

"More money is always needed to address the huge backlogs left by more than 300 years of colonial subjugation, and we appreciate that our international partners, like China, play a major role in this regard," the president said.

"History tells us that if used positively, education develops people and ensures that they are capacitated to change society for the better. I say this because some have used education negatively."

He said the award could be seen as the recognition and appreciation by China of the role the African National Congress played in the struggle against apartheid.

"All of us in the leadership of the ANC have made these accomplishments because of the unwavering support of the South African people," Zuma said.

"I am genuinely humbled that this recognition is done through me as the leader of this organisation, and as the leader of the democratic government of South Africa."

This is the ninth honorary academic award that Zuma has received.

The others are from the University of Fort Hare, the University of Zululand, the Medical University of Southern Africa, the University of Limpopo, the University of Zambia, the American University of Nigeria, the University of Abomey-Calavi of Benin and the Texas Southern University.

hahahahaha. I tell you what, if he can spell 'professor', give him the degree.

Ridiculous - the only professorship he should receive is for procrastination.

Charles, well said. I guess this nonsensical honorary title could only happen in a country like China. SA, be very careful dealing with this yellow nation, and before it's too late! There's a sinister ring in my head!!

Malose-N good comment, but for me ;Given my experience with the "relatively cheap but in the end expensive products I've bought until now,I think getting something for almost nothing must not be taken seriously.

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-07-21 09:22

I can't believe that after the recent Limpopo scandal and the apparent nepotism and corruption and incompetence involved, this idiot has the gall to blame the lack of education on apartheid. They already spend more money on education than any other BRICS country, which has enormous populations compared to us. Now they want more money. Un freaking believable

We have many success stories and most of our students are political leaders and key figures in the community. We are specifically proud of the massive impact we had on our country and its unwanted occupiers. Prof Zuma will join our panel of intellectuals who amongst other includes Dr. Field Marshal. And they don't really give a flying roast duck about much else.

  • vernon.samuel.7 - 2012-07-21 09:05

Nice one Mr President. Education is important in our country? Highest budget for education? Won't you please also tell the Chinese that the third biggest challenge in SA, after AIDS and crime, is delivering text books. Or how about mentioning that we dance in the streets and celebrate when our children achieve a 30% pass rate, and shower praises on these brainiacs. As a gesture of concern, you should humbly reject any honourary awards until you manage to positively turn around education in your country. You rightly say that the award is actually to all of SA. But do we really deserve degrees and doctrates when we can barely pass primary and secondary school?

  • Allan Lange - 2012-07-21 09:06

That's not how one spells 'honorary'. Why vilify the president when even the News24 editor cannot spell?

So far it's been just rhetoric. You speak speak speak, but we see little action. How about some action Professor President?\r\n\r\nOr, are you too busy fighting off the wolves who smell blood ahead of Mangaung?\r\n\r\nProfessor Rev Dr President Zuma, please act, and act now or your presidency will be a failed presidency.

The general population talk through the ballot!

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-07-21 10:06

The ballot is also a reflection of the IQ of the general population based on the quality of the leadership they keep on electing. In the case of SA it's very, very low

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-21 10:12

Actually the general population vote out of fear of losing their homes their nice ANC chief has "loaned" them for as long as they vote ANC!!!

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-21 11:08

IQ tests are an excellent measure of how well one performs on IQ tests -- nothing more. “People who boast about their IQ are losers” ? Stephen Hawking

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 17:45

The general population doesn't come on here - only those with access to technology do that which is a small minority.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 17:57

It is not a reflection of the IQ! There are some really smart people among the general majority population who have no access to technology and no jobs etc. DO NOT GENERALISE! Do not go off topic which is Zuma being made a Professor by the Chinese. We have only had 3 or 4 elections since 1994 and there are already many amongst the majority who have voted against the ANC from the majority. Understandably not all of them are mature enough to realise that one should vote on issues instead of wasting energy and matches etc which gets them nowhere in the long run. Then tyhere are those who have just given up hope and those who are not prepared to vote for DA who whether one likes it or not is still perceived as white and a threat. The DA is the official opposition which means they are acting watchdogs in parliament and come across as anti black as a result and the spectre of apartheid is still too fresh for the voters to understand that it is gone and that there are worse threats ahead than white people. That threat is the reason we are having this discussion - China!

This is really not very funny, on a number of levels - you know, like farting in a lift.... Zoomie accepts an Honarary Professorship and actually believes it has value. The Chinese bestow this Professorship (Honarary) on a man they know full well has no education - they'd get more satisfaction by prodding him with a pin to see if he'd take off! Hollywood doesn't have imagination broad enough to make up this sheet!

Skosana, that is a ridiculous comment. What is ridiculous is that the man is awarded a title that is not appropriate. His country is in ruins, bankrupt, his government is corrupt and a quarter of his people are unemployed. He continues to spend money we don't have and he ignores crime. White people are not interested in false fancy titles, bling, fancy cars, and big parties. We are not envious at all. Firstly my Kith and KIn dont need 2 boeings to go to town! Secondly, you are supposed to actually have a brain to be a professor. However on the chinese merit system of no brains needed,I think you are next up for a "professorship!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-21 12:45

Skosana, no one would do other than rejoice if this award was given to Madiba. It was given to a man not worthy of such things and there is no jealousy in anyone here because frankly an honorary what ever isn't worthy of the paper it is written on. So the only one here that should feel shame is you for writing such utter nonsense.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 18:20

Skosana, Global Power players never give anything to those inferior to themselves for nothing. They have an agenda - see dalai Lama for eg. No Unions in China. No freedom of speech for the unemployed or they get zapped likewise revolutionaries like Malema who don't toe the Party line. There is a price for this Professorship - it may be down the line but mark my words it is going to come. The African people and the Chinese have much in common and it would be interesting to live long enough to see who can outwit, outlast and outplay the other. An honorary professorship does not make you any smarter and we all know how indiscriminate Zuma is about who he gets into bed with.Don't say you weren't warned...

      Judy - 2012-12-12 13:54

Oh haha Skosana.... Really?... What did he give you or your neighbour these past years? Krap education..Krap Hospitals.. Krap roads.. etc etc or maybe he will invite you to Nkandla when the going gets rough... Wake up

  • alex.gush.3 - 2012-07-21 09:38

    Eish I cant believe

  • john.comley.12 - 2012-07-21 09:39

Sorry, WHAT a joke! Professor Zuma?

      jacob.siyanda - 2012-07-21 11:23

Its not a joke, that man is clever than most. he is president afterall.

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 18:28

@ Jacob: Don't sell yourself and many of your brothers short! There are many very smart people out there more deserving of this so called honour than our President. I can't think of any of our ANC politicians by name except perhaps Gordhan but then don't know who the unsung heroines are.

  • jacobus.m.vantonder - 2012-07-21 09:40

They say that people can't take education away from I wonder, what if they gave you the papers but no education...can you still loose the paperwork..

  • sarel.koen - 2012-07-21 09:45

Department of Sexology and Infertility ?

      victor.tamaranui - 2012-07-21 09:57

I sense some jealousy here, Maybe airing your personal inefficiencies may not be the best cure, It's obvious that your comment did not relate to teh President as his Fertility is beyond reproach.

      jacob.siyanda - 2012-07-21 11:19

      Ouch!!! Burn

      sharon.a.marks.9 - 2012-07-21 17:40

@ victor - he puts we pay

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 18:34

@Victor - Do you know that the Chinese have way more men than women because they have a one child per family law and so many girl children are drowned or killed at birth because a boy is more highly valued? Some are just abandoned and saved by charitable people and I'm not sure how many have been adopted by film stars and American couples with money who either could not have their own or acted out of pure humanity.

  • ianthe.exall - 2012-07-21 09:45

  • fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-21 09:58

China is our natural customer, what China offers to Africa is great deal better than the naked militarism of the United States and the endemic European model of dependency and humiliation. I for one am happy that a world power can trade with countries without trying to impose their will or "moral" values.

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-07-21 10:08

Apparently the Chinese are treating the Zimbabwean workers like dogs, but I am sure you right. We shouldn't impose any moral values should we?

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-21 10:27

@Devon A show of passion for education and self-improvement — along with remarkable capacity for discipline and hard work,Chinese call “chi ku,” or “eating bitterness.” @Mfazindini You flash your idiocy with great verve, I salute you and commiserate with those unfortunates whom you call family. Are you capable of offering comments that go beyond simply the profane and the vitriolic. Oh, I've been to space as well!

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-21 10:49

Yes the Chinese democratic model is definitely the best. Vote, whats that? Say somthing against the government and suddenly vanish into thin air over night. Yes definitely a model for the ANC. Territorial waters, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and more importantly, the Chinese themselves suffer at the hands of their government. There it is do or die, literally. I know I lived and worked there for a few years, mostly nice people but sh*t government. Kind of like SA in fact.

      scebberish.umfazi - 2012-07-21 10:52

and Fidel, you know not what you say! So maybe you should remain silent and let us all think you are an idiot, rather than post your idiotic comments and remove all doubts! Yo dont know a thing about China, not even where it is.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-21 11:18

China is about business, not spreading communism or proselytising any form of religion or ideology. The Chinese are not trying to civilise Africans or convert them into Christians. Clearly, you suffer from an inability to distinguish between a productive business partnership and colonialism. You are as dumb as you write!

      devon.riley.52 - 2012-07-21 12:20

@fidel clearly you are living on the wrong century. It's not the 1800's anymore. " A show of passion for education and self-improvement — along with remarkable capacity for discipline and hard work,Chinese call “chi ku,” or “eating bitterness.” " What has this to do with anything, zuma and his cadres are also passionate about education, but how is our education system. Don't give a flying f** about the Chinese I am more interested in our education system.

      fidel.mgoqi - 2012-07-21 12:30

I'm detecting a lot of anger here. Maybe you should go and have a little lie down. The "Chi ku" reference relates to your assertion that Zimbambweans are being worked like dogs. The Chinese work in the midday sun and show the natives by example how the Chinese do it. When Westerners work in Africa, they work in air conditioned cabins and worry about getting too bad a tan. The Chinese in Africa are leading by example, NOT the bad example of hiding in air conditioned cabins and living off corruption and the fat of the land, the good example of working a honest day's work for an honest day's pay. There's a lot of wisdom in that. Eating bitterness, remember these words!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-07-21 12:49

Fidel like they are doing to the Syrians?.

      sharon.a.marks.9 - 2012-07-21 17:42

fidel, send me your po box no ind i will send you the ky gel,you will need it with the chinese

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 18:38

So what do you call the refusal of a visa to the Dalai Lama to Tutu's birthday then? Blackmail!

      gail.hayesbean - 2012-07-21 19:03

@ fidel.mgoqi. I won't contradict you on the naked militarism thing but I would like to ask you who isn't a colonialist in Africa? Yes the colonials from the Northern Hemisphere did impose their beliefs on Africa. They brought education with them and a rich tradition of literary works and they were also lured here in the belief that there was virgin territory which they could work. If we really want to get pedantic many colonialists paid for the land which was alloted to them by the govt's of the times who had a problem with these people because they were unemployed due to the Industrial Revolution and so Unions came into being. These Unions were causing havoc and flyers were posted in places where they hung out like bars and soup kitchens etc. Despite having to pay their passage to SA this offer was oversubscribed - some 50,000 people in the UK applied to be part of the scheme. The UK couldn't accommodate more than about 4,000. If Africans want to be mad at the UK and demand reparation etc be our guest. Arabs were responsible for slave trade and commercial ventures as well as Dutch and Portuguese who arrived in the 1600's. Some were escaping religious persecution and so could be considered skilled refugees. We are the descendents of the survivors of those people, just as you are probably the descendent of Africans who fled more warlike people in Northern Africa. The Chinese invented gunpowder - guns were invented I believe in America colonised by same UK and Europe.
