Zuma urges nation to embrace NDP

2012-08-16 08:49

President Jacob Zuma has urged all South Africans to embrace the revised National Development Plan (NDP). WATCH

Cape Town - The youth should be involved in the implementation of the National Development Plan, President Jacob Zuma said on Thursday.

"We want the youth to own the NDP and to be part of its implementation, as it is designed to make this country a better place for them," Zuma said at the president's award for youth empowerment ceremony in Cape Town.

"I am humbled by the impact that the award programme is having on the lives of young South Africans," Zuma said.

He was encouraged to hear about the joint collaborative projects young people were involved in through the president's award programme.

Active citizenship

"As part of the president's award for youth empowerment's 30th anniversary year, three regional youth dialogue and action workshops were held in support of the National Youth Development Agency."

Zuma said that part of each workshop involved award participants being informed about the NDP, which was launched last year, and how young people could help realise the plan's vision 2030.

"Eastern Cape participants were involved in a pre-school literacy project, and Gauteng participants, which included participants from Barberton Correctional Centre in Mpumalanga, were involved in a desk refurbishing project for a needy school," Zuma said.

He said award participants were demonstrating their active citizenship.

"To have young people from schools, community youth groups and correctional centres all represented at these workshops speaks volumes for what the award programme endeavours to achieve in South Africa."

Zuma said he was pleased at the participation of youth from correctional centres.

"Government will continue to provide support through the department of correctional services," he said.

He said the introduction of the award programme in prisons was former president Nelson Mandela's initiative.

"We will continue to take forward Madiba’s dream of seeing young people changing their lives around and becoming good citizens."
