Zuma family in court for Spear

2012-05-24 10:11

Johannesburg - A large crowd of ANC supporters were outside the South Gauteng High Court on Thursday to support a legal attempt to remove a controversial painting of President Jacob Zuma from the Goodman Gallery.

Most of the group wore ANC T-shirts and sang in front of the court building. Some displayed posters reading: "President Zuma has a right to human dignity and privacy."

Six of Zuma's children, including Duduzane and Duduzile were at the court.

The ANC has brought an application to have the painting The Spear, by Cape Town artist Brett Murray, removed from view in the Rosebank gallery.

The political party contends that the work, which shows the president's genitals, is a violation of his dignity and that, in this case, the artist's right to freedom of expression should be set aside.

On Tuesday the work was vandalised by two men who smeared paint across it. A third man was later caught trying to spray paint the word "respect" on the wall outside the gallery.

All three were arrested and the gallery temporarily closed.

Roads around the court were closed on Thursday morning in anticipation of protests. Police in riot gear and police nyalas were parked along Pritchard Street.

The truth is a hard thing to discredit...

LOL Charles, thats ur famous line neh

      Rudi - 2012-05-24 10:20

OK Charles - we heard you three articles ago. Now that all 300 of his wives and children are in court, there won't be place for anybody else. Shame, they are living in denial. All of them, just enjoying the gravy train while it lasts. Idiots...

      Werner - 2012-05-24 10:22

Dubula, when Bill Clinton got caught with his pants down artists and cartoonists went crazy with the story. They (Artists) normally take inspiration of what is happening with the subjects that they portray especially in satirical art. Hence we have the Shower head on Shapiro's cartoons. He did not dream that shower up. Zuma has only himself to blame...

      Werner - 2012-05-24 10:45

Yes Dubula, I see that culture every time I walk into KFC and Mcdonalds!

      melania.nel - 2012-05-24 10:49

Eish johnslaon, poor Ayanda Mabula doesn't deserve to also be called a racist with a racist colonial mentality! His painting of zuma was much worse!

      rbphiri - 2012-05-24 11:05

Look in all honesty none of us would want our genitals on display for the world to see. I feel that Zuma's right to dignity has been infringed upon, but if you behaviour like a complete d!ck it's bound to show - in this case through a portrait. This art work should serve as a turning point that people are fed up with the surge in corruption, financial molestation of tax payers and other politically affiliated atrocities. I firmly believe the portrait is far from racism - but merely a portrait of reality in this country, MR murray had the balls to paint us the picture of this reality. MR President this shouldn't come as a suprise, you have parade your d*cks in public before, by d*cks I'm referring to some of your politicians who "screw" the country without showing signs of remorse. You fail to zip up the problem, I might as well tell my girl friend I'm bisexual, because several men in parliament have been screwing me over for years. You lost your right to dignity long before this portrait. My Black, White, Indian, Coloured brothers and Sisters, let us vote with our minds instead of our hearts, change is drastically needed. Alternatively will be living in a world of further taxation - where we work just to support government money making schemes.

      John - 2012-05-24 11:05

The ANC has brought an application to have the painting The Spear, by Cape Town artist Brett Murray, removed from view in the Rosebank gallery" but this has been done with no help from the court, stop wasting 5 judges time and get back to work and run the country, it what u get paid to do.

      Bob - 2012-05-24 11:40

Tsotsi, read Werner's comment, he is 100% correct, Africa has many diverse cultures due to the mix of population, European, Asian and African being the three main ones, and before you start your racist crap, all three are now integrated into Africa ie they are all now Africans, white, brown and black, all are part of this continent whether you like it or not, very few countries have their unique culture, China and India come to mind.

      JanHNortje - 2012-05-24 11:42

People see this for what it is. This is how Zuma roles. He will use anything to be center of attention the goal is to get votes. And the truth is that Malema has received more attention than he did. Last time when Zuma did this eg. "Shower head", corruption. HE was elected the president of the ANC.

      Steve - 2012-05-24 12:06

Or for Michelangelo's David statue. Or the nude garden statues you buy at the garden shops. On what grounds do you censor? For what would this case be used to enable sensorship for other stuff. Granted, I would not want a painting of myself nude. Just say must be carefull how it is done.

The definition of racism is controversial both because there is little scholarly agreement about what the word "race" means, and because there is also little agreement about what does and doesn't constitute discrimination. Some definitions would have it that any assumption that a person's behavior would be influenced by their racial categorization is racist, regardless of how seemingly benign such assumptions might be. Other definitions would only include conscious malignant forms of discrimination.[5] Among the questions about how to define racism are the question of whether to include forms of discrimination that are unintentional, such as making assumptions about preferences or abilities of others based on racial stereotypes, whether to include institutionalized forms of discrimination such as the circulation of racial stereotypes through the media and whether to include the socio-political dynamics of social stratification that sometimes have a racial component. "Racism" and "racial discrimination" are often used to describe discrimination on an ethnic or cultural basis, independent of whether these differences are described as racial. According to the United Nations conventions, there is no distinction between the terms racial discrimination and ethnicity discrimination. - 2012-05-24 11:21

Charles may well be a racist. He also may not be. I don't know, I dont know him. Neither do you. In isolation - Supporting freedom of artistic expression in this case does not a racist make. From my perspective. I dislike the picture. I wouldn't pay to go and see it so I won't. But I will defend the artist's right to paint it, the gallery's right to display it and the public's right to view it. I will also defend your right to criticize or protest it, Zuma's right to sue for defamation. What I won't do is support anyone's right to censor it or conduct violent protest.

      Werner - 2012-05-24 11:25

Everyone in SA are racist, that is what makes South Africa so unique and so colorful.

I feel for the children of Zuma family, am sure they never saw their fathers privet parts and now they have to see some one painting it. Umntwana omncane uma enokubona that would tell Zuma that wayibona into yakhe ephepheni, yerrr if it was my painting I would have went there and destroy it by myself. I would like my kids to see such a thing.

      qandam - 2012-05-24 10:24

I would not like my kids to see such a thing

      michael.a.devilliers - 2012-05-24 10:29

Zuma didn't pose for the painting so technically they're not his private parts. And it's spelt private... with an 'a'. Really, your kids seeing your private parts is the end of the world - so being accused of rape, being revealed as a womanizer was not much worse?

      Tax - 2012-05-24 10:30

How about all of the children that have seen their parents murdered or assaulted, thanks to Zuma's refusal to tackle the serious crime problem in this country?

The man is 70 still making babies @ that age, still getting married to younger woman which are the same age as his children. What is giving them and how is he doing all this without the spear. Lol I meant even me if I had to draw a picture of him that will be the first thing to come to my mind. THE MACHINE GUN

      michael.a.devilliers - 2012-05-24 10:34

Not even a question, it's a personal matter. It's a pity it doesn't matter either way because Zuma is part of the cANCer gravy train and taxpayers pay either way.

      Riad - 2012-05-24 11:44

@ michael.a.devilliers: So if this is the case, why is it so easy for government to spend the tax payers money in this manner which I would assume would lead into the millions instead of spending this for the betterment of the people of this country………so I guess this is of no consequence for what our money is used for like paying the advocates/lawyers, transport cost to bus in supporters for this trial to protest outside the courts and not to forget the cost of the PA system and big screen TV’s that's put up for the supporters in the street…….my my, are we that duped not to realise what’s happing right under our noses?

      Steve - 2012-05-24 12:29

@Riad. Maybe all these people that are taking part in the numerous service-delivery protests should try sending Zooomer some very rude and personal pictures and messages. Maybe then he will take some notice of their plight.

  • YrHonour - 2012-05-24 11:38

All I see on these sites are comments from White Racists - totally intolerant self serving scmucks - and i'm white! You cant help to unite anyone with your comments and so long as you're taking me on and not spewing your racial hatred then i have done my part according to me! Be warned before you reply, my tongue and writing will go for your jugular!

      Christian J Denyschen - 2012-05-24 12:00

How blind are you if u only see white racist?

  • JanHNortje - 2012-05-24 11:41

People see this for what it is. This is how Zuma roles. He will use anything to be center of attention the goal is to get votes. And the truth is that Malema has received more attention than he did. Last time when Zuma did this eg. "Shower head", corruption. HE was elected the president of the ANC.

  • Magwaza - 2012-05-24 11:42

I als feel shame for president being painted in puplic special family member and his to his privacy on media is very distabing some of his kids will ask question about the picture and how Mr Zuma is he going to answer his kids , We must remeber one thing he is our president whether we like it or not we must respect his presidency now.

  • Amelda - 2012-05-24 11:42

So, there is absolutely nothing else in this Country that needs urgent attention but for the Circus and it's Ring Leader and a stupid painting!!!

  • Rob - 2012-05-24 11:43

I don't get it! Several different cultures live side by side in SA (and most countries) There are bound to be fifference in value systems and traditions There will be issues that are seen differently, sometimes with any one of the range of human reactions possible from outright laughter to horror. Based on those assumptions I fail to see how any one of those culltures believes that it has a right to dictate to the others what is or is not acceptable. Let the legal processes deal with this, bringing in all the emotional stuff, including irresponsible political rhetoric devalues our society and its legal/justice system (further). Stop trying to argue the absolute of iwhether or not the painting is 'right' in whatever will be for some and will not be for others. MOVE ON, but please preserve some tolerance for those with a different view.

  • Shirley Van Heerden - 2012-05-24 11:43

On a point of order: Yesterday a baby and a granny was murdered in Delmas. And since then many other crimes have been committed - yet a sh@tload of money is spent on a freaking picture!!!! Get over it - it is really getting old. Why not spend the money on crime prevention or send a mourning mum a boquet of flowers - she waited 8 years for her baby - and he was murdered at 5 months old!!!! This countries priorities are truely screwed up!!!!!! I'm ashamed to call myself south african if a court case about a freaking painting is taking presedance over a country swimming in blood.

      Werner - 2012-05-24 11:51

Shirley, crime is their job, their existence and in their blood. Expecting 'them' to care about other people is quit out of their realm. Without the race card, they are worthless oxygen thieves, and the whole world knows it. I am also ashamed to be called a South African, for one reason, it is governed by the weak and thoughtless. All they co is riot, complain, rape, steal and blame an even weaker regime. I consider myself of no domicile, like a kite in a storm. word !

  • Phupoo - 2012-05-24 11:47

this whole sh#t z crazy! Any way we cn't deny the fact whch z portrayed by the painter.

  • netswera.livhuwani - 2012-05-24 11:49

Murray, replace the penis with a matchine gun, that will make him happy becouse he would then have got his lost matchine gun back moron

      ntokozo.z.nxumalo - 2012-05-24 12:32

You are happy by insulting our president, you are bitter because he is black. Guys you are dividing our country growup men

  • Andrew - 2012-05-24 11:53

Why don't we spend money on building schools, saving lives and fighting crime instead of closing roads (impeding the economy) and having court cases (wasting money) on something as trivial as this.

      Werner - 2012-05-24 11:57

building; saving; fighting - Andrew I am sure those terms are not in their manual. They are still STRUGGLING but achieving F@$Kol

  • netswera.livhuwani - 2012-05-24 11:56

Give this Zulu cattle herder a spear and a shield then send him back to Nongoma maybe Zwelithini will give him chiefdom rank over the Msholozis. President is way out of his league he is making Zulus look even more stupid.

  • jacqui.burtonpye - 2012-05-24 11:59

As far as I can see, The Spear names no person. The fact that people see it is Z, is a matter of assumption.....or is it just a matter of the shoe fitting?

      whatevafreakshow - 2012-05-24 12:28

The shoe fits. I actually find it arrogant of the Prez to assume it is of himself.
