Zuma is misleading SA - Holomisa

2012-10-21 14:33

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma is underestimating South Africans' intelligence, United Democratic Movement president Bantu Holomisa said on Sunday, in reaction to a media report on upgrades to Zuma's Nkandla home.

"He is misleading the country," Holomisa said in a statement.

"President Zuma is not building a safe and secure home for his retirement, he is building a private town of 25 houses, at R2.6m each, using taxpayers' money."

City Press reported that five days before Zuma called on executives to tighten their belts, the department of public works approved the payment of millions of rand to the contractors developing his homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.

The newspaper claimed to have copies of internal public works documentation showing that multi-million rand payments had been made to nine companies.

City Press had earlier reported that R203m of taxpayers' money would be spent on the upgrade, and that Zuma would pay only five percent of the bill - around R10m.

Beefed-up security

On 5 October, Public Works Minister Thulas Nxesi said the work at Zuma's home was not unique, and was part of the work undertaken at various security sites.

"When President Zuma was elected president, it was a requirement understood by all that the security would have to be beefed up at places of high security risk," Nxesi said at the time.

He said the same upgrades were done in Houghton and Qunu, where former president Nelson Mandela's homes were situated, at the Union Buildings, at the president's office at Tuynhuis, Parliament, and at King's House in Durban.

According to City Press, the biggest beneficiary of the Nkandla upgrade was businesswomen Thandeka Nene's Bnelena Construction Enterprise and Projects. The company was awarded two contracts, worth R33.4m and R66m.

The R33.4m was for "emergency work" that did not go out to tender.

Holomisa said it was shocking that one service provider had been given R99.3m to spend.

"The African National Congress should explain to the nation what its position is on its deployee spending millions of taxpayers' rands in this way," he said.

"They indeed owe an explanation to the voters of this country."

Zuma, How do you stand on a stage and give a speech, which you seemly come cross as a caring individual, with that giggle and huge smile..... But behind our backs you are stealing the peoples money....making sure that you and yours are living in luxury and excessive comfort.... Sir, how do you sleep at night...there are people, needing a meal..PLEASE EXAMINE YOUR HEART...HEAR THEIR CRY...AND DO SOMETHING.

the only option we have as citizens who are clearly against the leadership under president JZ is not to support his re-election for nxt term by being in charge of our power of X, we must put our X where we are satisfied!!!!!!!!! ENOUGH WITH THIS LEADERSHIP ENOUGH!!!!!!!!

The ANC was the biggest security risk this country ever faced with their terrorism strategy and all. Now that they hold the reins they should not be concerned about security anymore but alas, they see danger behind every bush. All I see is a compound with thatch roof buildings which should not cost more than say R1m apiece. The crooks are spending the money, but does it all go into the makukus on site? Probably not, this is just another case of greasing the palms of the tenderpreneurs, probably his family. My disgust has no bounds.

  • sonia.swarts - 2012-10-21 15:03

You Jacob Zuma talk about the white people like we he thrash! Let me tell you something devil child, the white people gave this country 2 u a 1st world country. 19 years later u with your lack of leadership have turned this into a 3rd world country. Why because the white man makes sure that there is order in the country. The white man make sure that people can eat, live, work and be stable. You have nothing to offer this country! U just take from this country. U are worse than Mugabi. U a crimenal, steal from your people and a low life pease of wanna be. I hope each and every black person in this country will see the truth and learn that U are a fake!!!!! May your fall be worth each and every sent. We the people are getting tired of you the corruption and crime rate. If u can't pull it together get the freaken hell out so the people can life!!!!!!

      sefako.mokgalaka - 2012-10-21 15:36

No one gave Zuma a 1st world country. If you are referring to when blacks took over from whites, you are still wrong. During the transition in the 1994 the rural areas where I grew up did not have tarred roads, electricity or any sort of a municipal service even my school did not have a library. You might have seen a 1st world where you stay but that does not mean the rest of the country was.

      mrova.blaza - 2012-10-21 15:42

can't you see that this approach of your people or my people is exactly what is causibg us problems ? There are good white people and there are bad white people as well, one does not inherently become good because he is white, one becomes good because he subscribes to certain values and principles in life.

      sonia.swarts - 2012-10-21 15:46

I never saw a first world country in the eyes of a white man. My family never supported apartheid. My father raised us on a farm. He built a school for the workers children and got a teacher in to get them educated. He looked after each and every one of us. He sheltered and clothed. That is what I know about the old south africa. Now, even today u can go to a lot of areas and still 19 years later shacks, no tar. No toilets no hot water come on let us be realistic. People are standing at robots, sitting next to the road. Stealing, begging, murdering and that is okay. No am sorry to say this this goverment has no idea what they are doing. If they took even half the money they are taking right now pretty much most people agter 19 years would have been sorted out.

Bantu Holomisa is the man. I always liked the way that Bantu Holomisa gets straight to the point and doesn't care on whose toes he steps on. That is why he was kicked out of the ANC, because he is not afraid to question people. It's a pity that he is not more active in politics.

  • peter.mokoena.31 - 2012-10-21 15:20

Ermegency funds. That's a new accounting words for me. The problem now is not the voters, is the few individuals who will go to Mangaunag claiming to represent, the voters, but come elections they will throw their majority away. Let Zuma be re elected, two third will go away and that will be the return to democracy. Who is the government fooling?

      Jakkals Venter - 2012-10-21 15:43

@mokoena i like the way u think piont taken

      neil.ross.5473 - 2012-10-22 10:14

Also love the "emergency funds". Great term. It works like this. A goat allegedly walks across the lawn. Call it a serious security breach. Tender out R30 million to a friend to install a camera. Get R25 million back in a secret bank account. There is no way that kraal is worth that kind of money. It looks like a rehab clinic or a poor, rural government-school boarding school. So, jacob, where is the rest of the money? Oh, and if you really paid R250 mil+ for that dump, you are even more stupid than we all thought.

  • sefako.mokgalaka - 2012-10-21 15:21

News24 is creating a panic out of every situation. It's a fact that ANC has been failing the people of South Africa and continue to do so. Sensationalizing every article that is against the government is not helping the situation. We know Zuma and his cabinet are not doing well in the government - what are we doing about it? Swearing at everyone who does not vote DA further pushes the people back to the same ANC. What we need now is some kind of a revolution to bridge the gap that exist between the poor and the rich.

      roy.wadhams.1 - 2012-10-21 15:35

@sefako.mokgalaka should this question not be directed at the people who keep voting the ANC in by means of posters, fliers and anything that will be seen and read by all in the townships etc. You make a very good point which many will agree with and perhaps approaching other parties,by means of emails etc, with this idea would make them think about not voting the ANC in again.

      raymond.sebeela - 2012-10-21 16:22

What a bunch of thieves these people are.

He s untouchable neh? Having more than one opposing parties having chairs in parliament fails to come up with a memo stating resolutions to this case and get signed by taxpayers at various departments and private companies to get majority rule. Later if agreed upon then is taken to court to get authority to repossess the Nkandla and then the money will be used to improve lives of poor south africans.

  • werner.n86 - 2012-10-21 15:39

The anc is actually brilliant. They know it doesn't matter what they do now steal and all. They just need to before election time give one or 2 people houses then they can make more empty promises. So we must stop blaming the anc. Its the people that keep voting for them fault. They keep them there with there false hope and all.

  • bashin.monyela - 2012-10-21 15:46

This is totally abusing the taxpayers money when a man like zuma built his nkandla empire as if he is the king and the nation owes him, first the man behaved like a man satisfying his childhood dream of being king with many wifes, now we are paying for his role of intervention during the war of inkatha and anc members in natal. Beyond this I see disaster if this man is to be elected for second term.\r\nIt is time for in the party to wake and serve the people and stop enriching themselves,we either have to vote a different party or stand up to the anc to be counted because those who are in the in the opposition do not want to have a common vission with regard to fight the zuma administration looting the state coffers. its a shame for people like thulas nxesi,mk veterans those who are going to mangaung to be a party, wanting the man for a second term and be using him to enrich themselves.

Unfortunately we have not heard his side of the story but this is unprecedented abuse of tax payers money. What is the NEC saying about this.Surely there is more we do not know. What is the Planning Dept saying about this.Zuma must be recalled before his term is finished.

@ndlovuvincent: the deafening silence by NEC et al is not surprising at all. Everyone cares about which side of their bread is buttered.

That's true General, its high time we voice out our concerns n take proper decisions/steps in making sure that this cums to an end and those liable to these expenditures be held accountable. ANC Government is taking us for granted, our voices are being ignored. They are enjoying gravey train at our expences yet they dnt gv a damn abt us. Opposition go to rural areas n make those people aware of wat they voted 4. Rural communities only knows dat its ANC that's paying their grants n ward councillors are also brain washing them!!!!!
