Zuma signs election proclamation

2014-02-21 16:37

Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma on Friday signed a proclamation declaring 7 May  as the date for the national elections, the presidency said.

"The proclamation by the president, setting 7 May 2014 as the date of the National Assembly elections, will be published in the Government Gazette on 25 February 2014," spokesperson Mac Maharaj said in a statement.

"The premiers of the provinces are duly expected to issue proclamations calling and setting the 7th of May 2014 as the date for the provincial legislature elections in their respective provinces."

Zuma, in terms of section 2A of the Public Holiday Act, declared the day a public holiday.

Eligible voters had until the official proclamation of the election date to register.

"According to section 24(1) of the Electoral Act, 1998, the voters roll will close on the day the election is proclaimed, which will be the 25th of February," said Maharaj.

Earlier this month, Zuma announced the date of the fifth national general.

The Independent Electoral Commission said once the proclamation was published it would issue an election timetable.

The timetable would give deadlines for submissions of candidate lists by political parties and applications for special votes, among others.

After consultation with political parties in the national party liaison committee, the IEC would publish the full election timetable in the Government Gazette.

If you are not satisfied with our democracy, I suggest you start your intelligent Party, get all the intelligent people to vote for you and then win the elections....then change the Constitution as follows: Only bright people like KISS can vote. Anyone else NO. Let's see how that pens out

@Leonard, as you know very well the Election Day was agreed upon between the president, IEC and all 9 premiers. That's why Zille was able to Tweet about it the next morning after the meeting. Are all of them buffoons?

      Luzuko Mtoyi - 2014-02-21 18:35

@Leonard, avoiding work is a South African thing...not just a Black thing! Get off that high horse, now. I have worked with Africa Middle East & the whole of Europe. Those people work! Maybe with exception of the UK...But the rest of the world work really hard, especially the Turkish people! And they have better MORALS than South Africa ( White & Black). Stop appropriating to yourself the crown of being a hard work just because you are white! It's nonsense!

      Linds Ron-House - 2014-02-21 20:17

@Leonard, majority rule is not unfortunate. This country has a long history of minority rule, and we know where that got us.

  • Michael Farrell - 2014-02-21 16:51

Why can the election date not just be fixed like it is in other countries? All south Africans should call for international monitoring of this election. If the ANC will cheat to win a municipality: Reports of alleged Zimbabwe style vote-rigging by the ANC in the recent Tlokwe by-elections are highly disturbing, particularly ahead of national and provincial elections this year (see City Press report). Allegations include bussing in voters, falsified registration details, voting outside registered areas and bribing people with food parcels, blankets and clothes. Today, the DA will request an urgent meeting with the IEC to discuss their plan to prevent these types of vote-rigging in the upcoming polls. This is in addition to legal support provided by DA Tlokwe councillor and lawyer, Hans-Jurie Moolman, to one of the independent candidates who has approached the electoral court over the matter. Our fifth national election since political freedom in 1994 will be the most highly contested yet and the IEC needs to explain to South Africa just how they will ensure they remain free and fair. When the DA took over Tlokwe municipality for a short period in November last year following a motion of no-confidence in the ANC Mayor, residents experienced DA delivery and transparency. Sadly, it appears that the ANC has resorted to desperate tactics to regain control of this area. Please don't be fooled into thinking they won't steal the national election as we.

      Mike Heyns - 2014-02-21 17:29

They didn't know when Nkandla was going to be completed??

      Luzuko Mtoyi - 2014-02-21 19:02

@Michael, "When the DA took over Tlokwe municipality for a short period in November last year following a motion of no-confidence in the ANC Mayor, residents experienced DA delivery and transparency...". Don't be fooled by the DA. When they lost again against the ANC, they started avoiding meetings that would have taken Combrink out! Remember? The DA is no better than the ANC, Michael...just that they want you to believe that. Zille is no better than Zuma, believe me. She got money from the Guptas ( Zuma's funders!). I don't remember her returning the money!??? And she was 'invited to Saxonworld ( summoned)' like the rest of Zuma's cabinet!

      Michael Farrell - 2014-02-21 19:24

Luzuko Mtoyi - Address the issue of vote rigging. I wasn't being PRO DA. I was alerting others to the facts that ANC is NOT apposed to vote rigging, and or election fraud on a grand scale. So lets not make this about the DA, it isn't. It's about the potential for abuse of the electorate and to falsify and or outright steal the election. Again, all South Africans should be calling for international monitoring of the next election. Unless of course you are an ANC supporter and you are afraid of being caught out in attempting to steal the national election. All in favour of corruption and cheating the voters will of course be opposed to monitoring from outside observes. And as we have seen we can't trust the AU to be unbiased in their activities in this matter.

      Stormy Naidu - 2014-02-21 22:05

Agree.....I think monitoring should happen for this round....I think Zumas track record is dismal on the integrity front.....he's learnt all the wrong lessons from Mubgabe.
