Johannesburg - President Jacob Zuma is to attend 70th anniversary celebrations marking the end of the occupation of China during WWII and the end of the global conflict itself.

"President Jacob Zuma has been invited by His Excellency Xi Jinping, President of the People's Republic of China, to participate in celebrations in Beijing on September 3 2015," spokesperson Bongani Majola said in a statement.

Apart from participating in the celebrations, it is anticipated Zuma and Xi will hold bilateral talks on the margins of the event.

"President Zuma and his delegation are expected to assess the status of progress on the key areas identified under the Five-to-Ten Year Strategic Programme for Co-operation," Majola said.

They would also discuss preparations for South Africa's hosting of the Forum for China-Africa Co-operation summit between December 4 and 5 and provide an update on developments regarding the Brics New Development Bank's African Regional Centre.

"China hosts the headquarters of the recently launched Brics Development Bank, based in Shanghai," Majola said.

Zuma will be accompanied by International Relations and Co-operation Minister Maite Nkoana-Mashabane and Deputy Energy Minister Thembisile Majola.
